Efficacy of acupuncture on cardiovascular complications in patients with diabetes mellitus in Korea:A nationwide retrospective cohort

Objective The main aim of this study is to investigate whether acupuncture could be an effective complementary treatment for reducing the risk of macrovascular complications in diabetic patients currently taking antidiabetic medications using a nationwide population-based *** We conducted a retrospective cohort study to assess the efficacy of acupuncture on cardiovascular complications in diabetic patients using data from patients between 40 and 79 years of age,newly diagnosed with diabetes between 2003 and 2006,found in the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort(NHIS-NSC)in *** the data,we identified 21,232 diabetic patients who were taking antidiabetic medication between 2003 and *** selected patients were divided into two groups-those who received acupuncture at least three times and those who received no acupuncture(non-acupuncture)in the year following their diagnosis of *** 1:1 propensity score matching(PSM),each group had 3350 patients,and the observation ceased at the occurrence of a major adverse cardiovascular event(MACE),which was defined as either myocardial infarction,stroke,or death due to cardiovascular *** After PSM,the acupuncture group had a lower incidence of MACE(hazard ratio[HR]:0.87;95%confidence interval[CI]:0.81-0.94;P=0.0003)and all-cause mortality(HR:0.77;95%CI:0.70-0.84;P<0.0001)than the non-acupuncture group;the HRs for stroke-related mortality(HR:0.75;95%CI:0.56-1.00;P=0.0485),ischemic heart disease mortality(HR:0.53;95%CI:0.34-0.84;P=0.006)and circulatory system disease mortality(HR:0.67;95%CI:0.55-0.82;P<0.0001)were lower in the acupuncture group than in the non-acupuncture group in the secondary *** Our results indicate that diabetic patients receiving acupuncture treatment might have a lower risk of MACE,all-cause mortality and cardiovascular *** population-based retrospective study suggests beneficial effects of acupuncture in preventing macro

Effect of Cerium Doping on Microstructure and Dielectric Properties of BaTiO_3 Ceramics

A solid state reaction method was used to synthesize barium titanate （BT） and barium cerium titanate （BCT） ceramics at sintering temperature of 1473 K for 4 h. The effect of cerium （Ce） on the structure, microstructure and dielectric properties of BCT was investigated. The scanning electron microscopy （SEM） investigations revealed that the grain size increases with increasing Ce content. The X-ray diffraction （XI^D） patterns showed mostly the BT phase, where the lattice parameter decreased with the addition of Ce. The temperature dependence of dielectric constant showed decrease in the phase transition temperature with higher Ce content. The dielectric constant decreased slightly with increasing frequency. The direct current （dc） density-voltage characteristics of the ceramics showed ohmic behavior for both the BT and BCT. As the temperature increased, the dc resistivity of the ceramics decreased. The activation energy increased with increasing Ce content.

Changes in particulate and mineral-associated organic carbon with land use in contrasting soils

Soil organic carbon(SOC)is the largest terrestrial carbon(C)stock,and the capacity of soils to preserve organic C(OC)varies with many factors,including land use,soil type,and soil *** investigated the effect of land use change on soil particulate organic matter(POM)and mineral-associated organic matter(MOM).Surface(0–10 cm)and subsurface(60–70 cm)samples were collected from paired sites(native and cropped)of four contrasting *** soils were separated into POM and MOM fractions,which were analyzed for mineralogy,OC,nitrogen,isotopic signatures,*** POM fractions of surface soils were relatively unaffected by land use change,possibly because of the continuous input of crop residues,whereas the POM fractions in corresponding subsurface soils lost more *** surface soils,MOM fractions dominated by the oxides of iron and aluminum(oxide-OM)lost more OC than those dominated by phyllosilicates and quartz,which was attributed to diverse organic matter(OM)input and the extent of OC saturation limit of *** contrast,oxide-OM fractions were less affected than the other two MOM fractions in the subsurface soils,possibly due to OC protection via organo-mineral *** deviations in isotopic signature(linked with vegetation)across the fractions suggested that fresh crop residues constituted the bulk of OM in surface soils(supported by greater14C).Increased isotopic signatures and lower14C in subsurface MOM fractions suggested the association of more microbially processed,aged OC with oxide-OM fractions than with the other MOM *** results reveal that the quantity and quality of OC after land use change is influenced by the nature of C input in surface soils and by mineral-organic association in subsurface soils.

Moutan Cortex Radicis inhibits the nigrostriatal damage in a 6-OHDA-induced Parkinson's disease model

The traditionally used oriental herbal medicine Moutan Cortex Radicis [MCR; Paeonia Suffruticosa Andrews(Paeoniaceae)] exerts anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and analgesic effects. In the present study, we investigated the therapeutic effects of differently fractioned MCR extracts in a 6-hydroxydopamine(OHDA)-induced Parkinson's disease model and neuro-blastoma B65 cells. Ethanol-extracted MCR was fractionated by n-hexane, butanol, and distilled water. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were treated first with 20 μg of 6-OHDA, followed by three MCR extract fractions(100 or 200 mg·kg^(-1)) for 14 consecutive days. In the behavioral rotation experiment, the MCR extract-treated groups showed significantly decreased number of net turns compared with the 6-OHDA control group. The three fractions also significantly inhibited the reduction in tyrosine hydroxylase-positive cells in the substantia nigra pars compacta following 6-OHDA neurotoxicity. Western blotting analysis revealed significantly reduced tyrosine hydroxylase expression in the substantia nigra pars compacta in the 6-OHDA-treated group, which was significantly inhibited by the n-hexane or distilled water fractions of MCR. B65 cells were exposed to the extract fractions for 24 h prior to addition of 6-OHDA for 30 min; treatment with n-hexane or distilled water fractions of MCR reduced apoptotic cell death induced by 6-OHDA neurotoxicity and inhibited nitric oxide production and neuronal nitric oxide synthase expression. These results showed that n-hexane-and distilled water-fractioned MCR extracts inhibited 6-OHDA-induced neurotoxicity by suppressing nitric oxide production and neuronal nitric oxide synthase activity, suggesting that MCR extracts could serve as a novel candidate treatment for the patients with Parkinson's disease.

Trace elements and stable sulfur isotopes in plants of acid mine drainage area:Implications for revegetation of degraded land

The abundances of trace elements,a low pH of water and soil in areas impacted by the acid mine drainage(AMD)may cause an excessive uptake of potentially toxic elements and nutritional imbalances in ***-tolerant,native plants are used for revegetation of degraded mining *** established levels of selected trace elements and stable sulfur isotopes in the above-ground plant biomass collected in a mining area in south-central *** 2016,20 samples of the most common species were collected from sites with a different influence of acid mine drainage and analyzed for trace elements by the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry *** the basis of the results obtained in 2016,the most contaminated site was selected for a more detailed study,in which sulfur contents and stable sulfur isotope ratios were determined together with trace elements in 17 *** results confirmed that the plants native to the AMD area efficiently accumulated trace elements,especially As and rare earth *** showed the highest content of trace elements,but exhibited the lowest concentrations of sulfur accompanied by the highestδ34S *** has been shown for the first time that stable sulfur isotope composition of AMD plants in south-central Poland is significantly depleted in the 34S isotope showing an averageδ34 S value of–10.5‰in comparison with positiveδ34S values in local vegetation growing outside the AMD area and in local precipitation.

Selective uptake of major and trace elements in Erica andevalensis,an endemic species to extreme habitats in the Iberian Pyrite Belt

To assess the ecophysiological traits and the phytoremediation potential of the endemic heather Erica andevalensis, we determined the concentrations of major and trace elements in different plant parts and in rizosphere soils from Riotinto mining district （Huelva, Spain）. The results showed that E. andevalensis may grow on substrates with very high As, Cu, Fe and Pb concentrations （up to 4114, 1050, 71900 and 15614μg/g dry weight, respectively）, very low availability of macro- and micronutrients and with pH values ranging from 3.3 to 4.9. In these harsh edaphic conditions E. andevalensis selectively absorbed and translocated essential nutrients and excludes potentially phytotoxic elements, which were accumulated in the root epidermis. The concentrations of major and trace elements in E. andevalensis aerial parts from the Riotinto mining district were in the normal range for plants; likewise other Erica species it accumulated Mn and only in a very polluted site we measured leaf concentrations of As and Pb within the excessive or toxic limits for plants. Differently from previous studies, which emphasized the soil pH and bioavailability of phytotoxic elements as the main stress factors, this study showed that in the Riotinto region, E. andevalensis can tolerate wide range of pH and toxic element concentrations; the harshest environments colonized by monospecific patches of this species were characterized above all by very low availability of nutrients. The extraordinary capability to adapt to these extreme habitats made E. andevalensis a priority species to promote the phytostabilization and the development of a self-sustaining vegetative cover on Riotinto mine tailings.

Systemic interleukin-9 in inflammatory bowel disease: Association with mucosal healing in ulcerative colitis

To evaluate circulating IL9 in inflammatory bowel disease and disease-associated anemia/cachexia and assess its potential as a mucosal healing *** IL9 as well as other cytokines (IL1β, IL6, IL13, IFNγ, TNFα, and VEGF-A) were determined in 293 individuals: 97 patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) and 74 with ulcerative colitis (UC) and in 122 apparently healthy controls. The clinical activity of CD and UC was expressed in terms of the Crohn’s Disease Activity Index (CDAI) and the Mayo Scoring System (MDAI), respectively, and the severity of bowel inflammation in UC patients was assessed using Mayo endoscopic score. Cytokine concentrations were measured by a flow cytometry-based method using Luminex xMAP® technology. High-sensitive C-reactive protein concentrations (hsCRP) were determined in CD and UC patients using the enhanced immunoturbidimetric *** IL9 was significantly lower in healthy individuals [9 pg/mL (95%CI: 8.2-10)] than in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): both inactive [14.3 pg/mL (11.9-19.9)] and active [27.6 pg/mL (24.5-32), P < 0.0001]. Cytokine concentrations were significantly higher in active CD [27.4 pg/mL (23.4-32.2)] and in active UC [32.7 pg/mL (27-38.9)] compared to inactive diseases [15.9 pg/mL (10.8-23.4) in CD and 19.4 pg/mL (13.9-27.1) in UC, P = 0.001]. IL9 correlated weakly with CDAI (ρ = 0.32, P = 0.003) and MDAI (ρ = 0.35, P = 0.002) and strongly with endoscopic inflammation in UC (ρ = 0.74, P < 0.0001). As a negative marker of mucosal healing (MH), IL9 had an accuracy superior to hsCRP and IL6 [97% (P < 0.0001), 67% (P = 0.071), and 55% (P = 0.525), respectively]. IL9 was significantly higher in cachectic IBD patients [30.25 pg/mL (24.4-37.5) vs 21.88 pg/mL (18-26.5), P = 0.026] and negatively correlated with hemoglobin concentrations (ρ = -0.27, P < 0.001).
