Comparative carbon emission assessments of recycled and natural aggregate concrete: Environmental influence of cement content

We look at the link between climate change and vector-borne diseases in low- and middle-income countries in Africa. The large endemicity and escalating threat of diseases such as malaria and arboviral diseases, intensified by climate change, disproportionately affects vulnerable communities globally. We highlight the urgency of prioritizing research and development, advocating for robust scientific inquiry to promote adaptation strategies, and the vital role that the next generation of African research leaders will play in addressing these challenges. Despite significant challenges such as funding shortages within countries, various pan-African-oriented funding bodies such as the African Academy of Sciences, the Africa Research Excellence Fund, the Wellcome Trust, the u.S. National Institutes of Health, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well as initiatives such as the African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence and the Pan-African Mosquito Control Association, have empowered (or are empowering) these researchers by supporting capacity building activities, including continental and global networking, skill development, mentoring, and African-led research. This article underscores the urgency of increased national investment in research, proposing the establishment of research government agencies to drive evidence-based interventions. Collaboration between governments and scientific communities, sustained by pan-African funding bodies, is crucial. Through these efforts, African nations are likely to enhance the resilience and adaptive capacity of their systems and communities by navigating these challenges effectively, fostering scientific excellence and implementing transformative solutions against climate-sensitive vector-borne diseases.

The environmental influence of cement content, aggregate production, transportation, and waste landfilling is analysed by undertaking a life cycle assessment and considering a life cycle inventory largely specific for the region. To obtain a detailed insight into the optimum life cycle parameters, a sensitivity study is carried out in which supplementary cementitious materials, different values of natural-to-recycled aggregate content ratio and case-specific transportation distances were considered. The results show that carbon emissions were between 323 and 332 kg CO2e per cubic metre of cement only natural aggregate concrete. These values can be reduced by up to 17% by replacing 25% of the cement with fly ash. By contrast, carbon emissions can increase when natural coarse aggregates are replaced by recycled aggregates in proportions of 50% and 100%, and transportation is not included in analysis. However, the concrete with 50% recycled aggregate presented lower increase, only 0.3% and 3.4% for normal and high strength concrete, respectively. In some cases, the relative contribution of transportation to the total carbon emissions increased when cement was replaced by fly ash in proportions of 25%, and case-specific transportation distances were considered. In absolute values, the concrete mixes with 100% recycled aggregates and 25% fly ash had lower carbon emissions than concrete with cement and natural aggregates only. Higher environmental benefits can be obtained when the transportation distances of fly ash are relatively short(15–25 km) and the cement replacement by fly ash is equal or higher than 25%, considering that the mechanical properties are adequate for practical application. Space and Temporal Distribution Analysis of Interictal Spike in Epilepsy

Stereo-electroencephalography （SEEG） is the main investigation method for pre-surgical evaluation of patients suffering from drug-resistant partial epilepsy. SEEG signals reflect two types of paroxysmal activity： ictal activity and interictal activity or interictal spikes （IS）. The relationship between IS and ictal activity is an essential and recurrent question in epiletology. In this paper, we present a distributed and parallel architecture for space and temporal distribution analysis of IS, based on a distributed and collaborative methodology. The proposed approach exploits the SEEG data using vector analysis of the corresponding signals among multi-agents system. The objective is to present a new method to analyze and classify IS during wakefulness （W）, light sleep （LS） and deep sleep （DS） stages. Temporal and spatial relationships between IS and seizure onset zone are compared during wakefulness, light sleep and deep sleep. Results show that space and temporal distribution for real data are not random but correlated.

Evolution of Dam Lakes in the Kayanga/Geba Basin: Contribution of Remote Sensing and GIS

The Confluent and Niandouba dams were built in 1984 and 1997 respectively to better control water resources, increase agricultural production and promote local development. This article studies their evolution on the Kayanga/Geba River, a transboundary river between Guinea, Senegal and Guinea-Bissau, from its impoundment to the present day. The topographic characteristics analysed through the DTMs (Digital Terrain Models) show a flat shape for the Confluent Dam Lake and long plateaus for the Niandouba Dam Lake. The cross-sections present a variety of morphologies ranging from wide u-shaped valleys with sinuous bottoms to deep V-shaped valleys. The homogenisation and reconstruction of missing values were carried out using the regional vector method. The application of Pettitt’s statistical test on annual rainfall (1932-2019) indicates breaks of stationarity in 1967 or 1969. The post-breakage deficits range from 11.4% to 19.4%. The segmentation method corroborates the results of the Pettitt test. The variations of the surface area of the Confluent and Niandouba water bodies are linked to rainfall, evaporation and withdrawals for different uses. Their monitoring would allow for better management of available water resources but also for good planning of off-season crops.

A Fatal Complication of A Peripheral Venous Catheter

Peripheral venous catheters (PVC) are widely used in the hospital and seem to be innocent. However, complications can be devastating. We present a case of a fatal septic shock due to vertebral osteomyelitis after PVC-related Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (sab). Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of bacteraemia in both the community and the hospital with a significantly increased incidence over the last several decades. Intravascular catheters are the most common cause of sab. Morbidity and mortality are high, even with appropriate therapy. Although complications are known and common, they may be difficult to recognize. Vertebral osteomyelitis is one of these known severe complications.

为提高粉末冶金对其他制造技术的竞争性，需要适宜的合金系以及在降低加工费用的情况下提高力学性能并保持公差控制精度的工艺技术。在加热了的模具中压制加热的粉末是一种经一道工序就使密度提高到7.2～7.5g／cm3的新工艺。通过该工艺，可以得到相当于复压／复烧的密度水准与力学性能。然而，通过温压提高性能须兼而保持与传统粉冶工艺路线相同等级的公差猜度。本文介绍了这种特性粉末以及一些低合金粉冶材料（在温压与烧结后）的力学性能。同时也叙述了用温压工艺生产部件时有关公差精度的一些试验结果。

目的探讨如何利用血培养法从HIV阳性患者血液标本检测马尔尼菲青霉菌。方法从两个不同部位分别无菌抽取患者血液于2个BD需氧血培养瓶中,用BD9240全自动血培养仪进行培养。仪器阳性报警后,若涂片见到真菌孢子或菌丝,初代培养用沙氏琼脂培养基及血平板35℃培养。对于丝状菌落适时转种2块沙氏琼脂培养基,分别进行35℃和25℃培养。每日观察菌落及菌体形态变化情况,用乳酸酚棉蓝染色法观察菌体形态。结果从63例HIV阳性患者送检的血培养中检测出6株马尔尼菲青霉菌。结论采用血培养法可以从HIV患者的血液标本中检测出马尔尼菲青霉菌,细菌室应提高检测能力,及时准确检测出马尔尼菲青霉菌。
