Prevalence and factors of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among hand surgeons

BACKGROUND The nature of tasks required by hand surgeons require both forceful and repetitive maneuvers,thus subjecting these surgeons to the risk of musculoskeletal(MSK)injuries during their years in practice.AIM To assess the prevalence,characteristics and impact of MSK disorders among hand surgeons.METHODS A modified version of the physical discomfort survey was sent to surgeons who were members of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand via e-mail.The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics,one-way analysis of variance,and Fisher’s exact test.P values of<0.05 were considered statistically significant.RESULTS Of the 578 respondents,60.4%reported that they had sustained a work-related MSK injury,of which the most common diagnoses were lateral elbow epicondylitis(18.7%),low back pain(17.1%)and carpal tunnel syndrome(15.6%).Among those that reported an injury,73.1%required treatment and 29.2%needed time off work as a direct result of their injury.The number of work-related injuries incurred by a surgeon increased significantly with increasing age(P<0.003),increasing years in practice(P<0.001)and higher case load(P<0.05).CONCLUSION To our knowledge this study is the first of its kind to assess MSK injuries sustained by Hand surgeons with a high incidence.These results should increase awareness on this aspect and fuel future studies directed at preventing these types of work-related injuries,thus minimizing the financial and psychological burden on these surgeons and the healthcare system.

Several applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence,have acquired importance and come to the fore as a result of recent advances and improvements in these approaches.Autonomous cars are one such application.This is expected to have a significant and revolutionary influence on society.Integration with smart cities,new infrastructure and urban planning with sophisticated cyber-security are some of the current ramifications of self-driving automobiles.The autonomous automobile,often known as selfdriving systems or driverless vehicles,is a vehicle that can perceive its surroundings and navigate predetermined routes without human involvement.Cars are on the verge of evolving into autonomous robots,thanks to significant breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and related technologies,and this will have a wide range of socio-economic implications.However,in order for these automobiles to become a reality,they must be endowed with the perception and cognition necessary to deal with high-pressure real-life events and make proper judgments and take appropriate action.The majority of self-driving car technologies are based on computer systems that automate vehicle control parts.From forward-collision warning and antilock brakes to lane-keeping and adaptive drive control,to fully automated driving,these technological components have a wide range of capabilities.A self-driving car combines a wide range of sensors,actuators,and cameras.Recent researches on computer vision and deep learning are used to control autonomous driving systems.For self-driving automobiles,lane-keeping is crucial.This study presents a deep learning approach to obtain the proper steering angle to maintain the robot in the lane.We propose an advanced control for a selfdriving robot by using two controllers simultaneously.Convolutional neural networks(CNNs)are employed,to predict the car’and a proportionalintegral-derivative(PID)controller is designed for speed and steering control.This study uses a Raspberry PI based camera to control t

BACKGROUND Work-related injuries have gained recent attention,especially in the orthopaedic literature.As upper extremity orthopaedic surgical tasks require repetitive and constant maneuvers,these surgeons can be at increased risk of acquiring workrelated musculoskeletal(MSK)disorders during their years in practice.AIM To assess the prevalence,characteristics and impact of MSK disorders among upper extremity orthopaedic surgeons.METHODS A modified version of the physical discomfort survey was sent to surgeons who were members of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and the Canadian shoulder and elbow society via e-mail.The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics,one-way analysis of variance,and Fisher's exact test.P values of21 years(P<0.05).CONCLUSION A high proportion of surgeons in our survey reported MSK injuries,with more than one quarter of surgeons reported requiring time off work due to an MSK injury.The high incidence of these disorders may place a financial and psychological burden on surgeons and affect their ability to provide patient care.Awareness of operative ergonomics,irrespective of surgical specialty may help to decrease or possibly prevent the occurrence of these disorders.

BACKGROUND Orthopedic oncology surgeons commonly engage in prolonged and complex surgical procedures.These types of surgeries increase the risk of physical and psychological stressors,which may in turn make these physicians prone to workrelated occupational injuries.AIM The aim of this study was to explore in orthopedic oncologists,the prevalence of work-related physical injuries and psychological disturbances.METHODS A modified version of the physical discomfort survey was developed to assess occupational injuries among orthopedic oncology surgeon members of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society,the Canadian Orthopedic Oncology Society and European Musculoskeletal Oncology Societies.The survey was sent by email,and it explored musculoskeletal complaints,psychological disturbances,treatment required for these complaints and the requirement of time off work.RESULTS A total of 67 surgeon responses were collected.A high number of orthopedic oncologists(84%)reported an occupational injury.Low back pain(39%)was the most prevalent musculoskeletal condition,followed by lumbar disk herniation(16%),shoulder tendinitis(15%)and lateral epicondylitis(13%).Of the cohort,46%required surgery and 31%required time off work due to their injury.Thirty-three respondents reported a psychological disorder.Burnout(27%),anxiety(20%)and insomnia(20%)were the most commonly reported.Time required off work due to injury was associated with old age and years in practice.CONCLUSION Orthopedic oncology surgeons report a high prevalence of work-related disorders.Lower back related injury and burnout were the most reported disorders.Improving operative room ergonomics and prevention of stress related to the work environment should be areas to explore in upcoming research.

Introduction: The exhaustion of healthcare resources due to the rising prevalence in Saudi Arabia mandates the search for each method that can help in better control of diabetes. Methods: The gathered task force gath-ered to develop an explicit, evidence-based consensus for the use of time-in-range targets as guidance for better glycemic control while using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). This article has the recommenda-tions of this expert panel. Results: HbA1c and self-monitoring blood glu-cose (SMBG) are not enough to detect blood glucose (BG) fluctuations on a daily basis. The incorporation of technology like FreeStyle Libre with its applications like Libre View is now used in many institutes in Saudi Ara-bia. This system is comprehensive and has all the standardized metrics needed. However, training and support are always needed. Barriers and challenges include the awareness & experience of the technology, the time barrier, the patients’ barriers, the technical barriers, and of course, the availability barrier. All the barriers and challenges should be dealt with by designing new training programs. Conclusion: The expert panel recom-mended using CGMs technology in people with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) children and adults, type 2 diabetes (T2DM) on multiple insulin injections, gestational diabetes (GDM) who need further glycemic control, and those at high risk for hypoglycemia. In addition, we recommend using them for a short period for those who require intensive BG control or during acute illness or stress. In addition, Ambulatory Glucose Profile (AGP) could be used as an educational tool for any individuals with DM to study the im-pact of certain elements of lifestyle modifications on their immediate BG level.

Background: Test-retest strength reliability of the Electronic Push/Pull Dynamometer (EPPD) in the measurement of the extensor and flexor muscles on a new constructed chair. The objective of the study was to assess reliability of Electronic Push/Pull Dynamometer in the measurement of the knee flexion and extension at 90° and 60° on a new constructed chair. The aims of the author: To assess reliability of Electronic Push/Pull Dynamometer in the measurement of the knee flexion and extension at 90° and 60° on a new constructed chair. Design: A test-retest reliability study. Subjects: One hundred healthy students male and female (mean age, 21y). Methods: Maximum isometric strength of the quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups was measured using the EPPD were recorded at 60° and 90° for 3 trials on 2 occasions. Reliability was assessed with the Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), mean and standard deviation (SD) of measurements, and smallest real differences were calculated for the maximum and for the mean and work of the 3 repetitions. Results: Mean strength ranged from 50.44 kg for knee flexion to 55.76 kg for knee extension 50.44 kg to 61.98 kg at 90° hip flexion. Test-retest reliability Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) ranged from 0.85 to 0.99. ICCs for test-retest reliability ranged from 0.780 to 0.998. Conclusions: The results of the reliability study indicate that the EPPD in reliable dynamometer to use in determining lower limb muscle force production. It can be used to measure disease progression and to evaluate changes in knee extension and flexion strength at the individual patient level.
