The risk of pharmacokinetic polyphenols-trace elements interaction may undesirable therapeutic outcomes. We evaluate the long-term use of silibinin, epigallocatechin (ECGC), quercetin and rutin on the absorption and tissue distribution of zinc, copper and iron after single oral doses in rats. Five groups of rats were either with olive oil as control or with one of the polyphenols silibinin, EPGC, quercetin or rutin, administered orally as oily solutions for 30 days. At day 30, a solution contains sulphate salt of zinc, copper and iron was administered orally;3 hrs later blood samples, tissues of brain, kidney and liver were obtained for evaluation of the elements levels. The results showed that the polyphenols increased both serum and tissue levels of these elements compared with controls. This effect was relatively varied according to the structural differences among flavonoids. In conclusion, long-term use of supraphysiological doses of flavonoids increase absorption of Zn, Cu and Fe and their tissue availability in brain, kidney and liver;this effect seems to be different with variations in structural features.

Background: The standard screening test for cervical cancer is the Pap smear and cervical cancer is a significant health issue worldwide. Early sexual activity, multiple sexual partnerships, parity, young age at first pregnancy and early marriage are traditional risk factors for developing cervical cancer. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of early marriage in on the results of Pap smear in Iraqi women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 200 women who attended the Women Health Clinic of Al-Elwiya Maternity Teaching Hospital, Baghdad for the period from November 2013 to April 2014. Data were collected through direct interview and a prepared questionnaire including patients’ characteristics and Pap smear results. Results: Mean age of studied women was 39.9 ± 11.4 years and mean age of marriage was 19 ± 5 years. Abnormal Pap results were reported in 63.5% of them. A significant association was observed between abnormal Pap smear and each of age 20 - 30 years, ≤18 years age at marriage, marriage duration >10 years, irregular menstrual cycle, tubal ligation and abnormal medical history (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Early marriage was strongly associated with abnormal Pap smear results in Iraqi women.

Effect of quercetin on postprandial glucose excursion after mono- and disaccharides challenge in normal and diabetic rats

Postprandial hyperglycemia is a major risk factor for diabetic complications leading to disabilities and mortality in diabetics. Quercetin, a flavonoid, has been tried in traditional medicine for treating diabetes. The present study was designed to evaluate the potential of quercetin to control postprandial blood glucose level after maltose and glucose loading in normal and STZ-induced diabetic rats. Normal male Albino wistar rats and STZ-induced diabetic rats were treated with 300 and 600 mg/kg quercetin orally to evaluate the effect on postprandial hyperglycemia after carbohydrate loading, using acarbose as comparator. The results clearly showed ameliorated postprandial hyperglycemia due to the use of quercetin (300 and 600 mg/kg), it significantly dampened the postprandial hyperglycemia by 32.0% and 64.0% respectively, in maltose loaded diabetic rats, and 30.3% after 300 mg/kg dose in normal rats, compared to control;while acarbose produced 51% and 54% decrease in this respect in the two models respecttively. Quercetin in 600 mg/kg dose produces significantly more reduction in postprandial hyperglycemia compared to acarbose, while in rats that received glucose and quercetin, postprandial hyperglycemia was not significantly affected. In conclusion, quercetin effectively suppresses postprandial hyperglycemia in STZ-induced diabetic rats loaded with maltose, which may be attributed to α-glucosidase inhibition. Quercetin could be used as a potential supplement for treating postprandial hyperglycemia.

Despite the extensive clinical experience with the use of metformin worldwide, no formal dose-ranging study has been conducted because the current dosing strategy of metformin was determined empirically, rather than by an understanding of its dose-response relationship in patients with type 2 diabetes. The present study was designed to evaluate the correlation between serum metformin levels and glycemic control, insulin resistance and leptin levels in females newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Sixty type 2 diabetic females were recruited for the study and were allocated into 3 groups;each receiving metformin 1000, 1500 and 2000 mg/day respectively for 3 months. Blood samples withdrawn from each patient at zero time and after 3 months is used to evaluate serum levels of HbA1c, glucose, leptin and insulin, in addition, the measurement of serum level of metformin in blood after 3 months by HPLC. The results demonstrated that all the treated groups with different doses of metformin showed significant improve in all parameters;the use of increased metformin doses was only correlated with plasma leptin levels in the highest dose. In conclusion, serum metformin levels are not good predictors for correlating improvement in clinical and biochemical parameters with increasing the dose in newly diagnosed non-insulin resistant females with type 2 diabetes.

The membrane water content of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC)is the most important feature required for water management of the PEMFC *** improper management of water in the fuel cell may lead to system *** various faults,flooding and drying faults are the most frequent in the PEMFC *** paper presents a new dynamic semi-empirical model which requires only the load current and temperature of the PEMFC system as the input while providing output voltage and membrane water content as its major *** other PEMFC systems,the proposed dynamic model calculates the internal partial pressure of oxygen and hydrogen rather than using special internal ***,the membrane water content and internal resistances of PEMFC are modelled by incorporating the load current condition and temperature of the PEMFC *** model parameters have been extracted by using a quantum lightening search algorithm as an optimization technique,and the performance is validated with experimental data obtained from the NEXA 1.2 k W PEMFC *** further demonstrate the capability of the model in fault detection,the variation in membrane water content has been studied via the *** proposed model could be efficiently used in prognostic and diagnosis systems of PEMFC fault.

AIM:To study the association of apolipoprotein E(APOE) polymorphisms with the susceptibility ofinflammatory bowel disease(IBD) in Saudi ***:APOE genotyping was performed to evaluate the allele and genotype frequencies in 378 Saudi subjects including IBD patients with ulcerative colitis(n = 84) or Crohn's disease(n = 94) and matched controls(n = 200) using polymerase chain reaction and reverse-hybridization ***:The frequencies of the APOE ε2 allele and ε2/ε3 and ε2/ε4 genotypes were significantly higher in IBD patients than in controls(P < 0.05),suggesting that the ε2 allele and its heterozygous genotypes may increase the susceptibility to *** the contrary,the frequencies of the ε3 allele and ε3/ε3 genotype were lower in IBD patients as compared to controls,suggesting a protective effect of APOE ε3 for *** prevalence of the ε4 allele was also higher in the patient group compared to controls,suggesting that the ε4 allele may also increase the risk of *** results also indicated that the APOE ε4 allele was associated with an early age of IBD *** effect of gender or type of IBD(familial or sporadic) on the frequency distribution of APOE alleles and genotypes was noticed in this ***:APOE polymorphism is associated with risk of developing IBD and early age of onset in Saudi patients,though further studies with a large-size population are warranted.

Objective: To investigate the effects of Andrographis paniculata(Burm.f.) Wall. Ex Nees(A. paniculata) on expressions and activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase and alkylhydroperoxide reductase C in Staphylococcus aureus(S. aureus) with respect to its survival in vitro. Methods: Antioxidative property of methanolic leaves extract of A. paniculata(0.06 mg/m L). Minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) was determined by its ability to reduce hydrogen peroxide(H_2O_2) toxicity against S. aureus ATCC 25923(3.8×10~8 cfu/m L). Effects of the extract on expressions of kat A(encoding catalase), sod A and sod M [encoding superoxide dismutases(SODs)], and ahp C [encoding alkylhydroperoxide reductase C(AhpC)] in S. aureuswere determined by RT-q PCR and corresponding enzyme activity assays were performed. Nitroblue tetrazolium reduction(NBT) assay was performed to determine effects of the extract on intracellular and extracellular levels of O_2-in S. aureus. Results: Cells challenged with 7.5 mmol/L H_2O_2 showed 0% survival in 30 min whereas 25% survived after treatment with the extract and H_2O_2. Cells that were treated with the extract alone had 43% survival in the same exposure period. Expressions of sod A and sod M genes in extract-treated cells were lowered 0.8-fold and 0.7-fold, respectively with decrease in total SOD activity of 26.8 U compared to untreated cells, 32.4 U(P<0.05). In contrast, extract-treated S. aureus cells showed 3.3-fold increase in kat A expression with corresponding increase in catalase activity of 1.828 U compared to untreated cells which was 1.248 U,(P<0.05). More profoundly, ahp C expression was increased 61-fold in extract-treated cells,(P<0.05) with corresponding increase in Ahp C activity of 0.018 U compared to untreated cells, 0.012U,(P<0.05). Extract-treated cells had significantly lower intra-and extracellular O_2-levels with absorbance readings(A_(575nm)) of 0.340 and 0.524 compared to untreated cells which were 0.516 and 0.928(P<0.05)

One of the most widely used smartphone operating systems,Android,is vulnerable to cutting-edge malware that employs sophisticated *** malware attacks could lead to the execution of unauthorized acts on the victims’devices,stealing personal information and causing hardware *** previous studies,machine learning(ML)has shown its efficacy in detecting malware events and classifying their ***,attackers are continuously developing more sophisticated methods to bypass ***,up-to-date datasets must be utilized to implement proactive models for detecting malware events in Android mobile ***,this study employed ML algorithms to classify Android applications into malware or goodware using permission and application programming interface(API)-based features from a recent *** overcome the dataset imbalance issue,RandomOverSampler,synthetic minority oversampling with tomek links(SMOTETomek),and RandomUnderSampler were applied to the Dataset in different *** results indicated that the extra tree(ET)classifier achieved the highest accuracy of 99.53%within an elapsed time of 0.0198 s in the experiment that utilized the RandomOverSampler ***,the explainable Artificial Intelligence(EAI)technique has been applied to add transparency to the high-performance ET *** global explanation using the Shapely values indicated that the top three features contributing to the goodware class are:Ljava/net/URL;->openConnection,Landroid/location/LocationManager;->getLastKgoodwarewnLocation,and *** the other hand,the top three features contributing to themalware class are Receive_Boot_Completed,Get_Tasks,and Kill_Background_*** is believed that the proposedmodel can contribute to proactively detectingmalware events in Android devices to reduce the number of victims and increase users’trust.

Dielectric properties of (Zn)x/CuTl-1223 nanoparticle-superconductor composites

Zinc (Zn) nanoparticles and (Cu0.5Tl0.5)Ba2Ca2Cu3O10?δ (CuTl-1223) superconducting phase were prepared separately by sol-gel and solid-state reaction methods, respectively. Zn nanoparticles were added in CuTl-1223 superconducting matrix with different weight percentage during the final sintering process to obtain (Zn) x/CuTl-1223 (x = 02-4 wt%) nanoparticle-superconductor composites. The effect of Zn nanoparticles on structural, morphological, superconducting, and dielectric properties of CuTl-1223 phase was investigated. The addition of these Zn nanoparticles has not affected the crystal structure of host CuTl-1223 superconducting phase. Superconducting properties were enhanced after the addition of Zn nanoparticles up to certain optimum content (i.e., x = 1 wt%), which were due to improved inter-grain connectivity by healing up of micro-cracks and reduction of defects like oxygen deficiencies, etc. The activation energy (U) was increased after the addition of Zn nanoparticles in CuTl-1223 phase. The dielectric properties of these samples (i.e., dielectric constant, dielectric loss) were determined by experimentally measured capacitance (C) and conductance (G) as a function of frequency at room temperature. The addition of metallic Zn nanoparticles in CuTl-1223 matrix has overall suppressed the dielectric parameters of (Zn) x/CuTl-1223 nanoparticle-superconductor composites. The metallic Zn nanoparticles played a significant role in inter-grain couplings by filling the voids and pores.
