Alternancy Study on Rambutan(Nephelium lappaceum l.)Tree in Mexico

Rambutan growing in the state of Chiapas has brought about a demand for new plantations;however, this species has several biotic and abiotic factors that limit its production. These factors include phytosanitary problems, deficient agronomical handling, and production alternancy. Because of this, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the application of agronomical practices such as pruning, ringing, water stress, and their interaction on the rambutan alternancy. The experiment was carried out in the “la Chinita” commercial orchard located on KM. 4.5 the Huehuetan Station, municipality of Huehuetan, Chiapas, Mexico. We used 48 rambutan trees in production with an age of 14 years. Two production cycles were evaluated. The experiment was established under a divided plot experimental design in random complete blocks with a factorial arrangement and six replicates;each tree being a replicate. The study factors were: water stress, pruning, girdling, irrigation (control), and their combinations, resulting in eight treatments. The evaluation was done during flowering, fruit set, and harvest. In flowering, the treatments with permanent irrigation in both evaluated cycles (2010-2011 and 2011-2012) manifested a production alternancy behavior, with an average 36.4% flowering in the first evaluation cycle and increased to 82.1% in the second cycle. The treatments with water stress kept a proportional flowering during the first and second cycles of 97.9% and 95.3%, respectively. The water stress influenced the bunch weight (PR) variable fruit set with bigger fruits and higher bunch weight than the irrigated treatments. In production, pruning and girdling together with water deficit had no alternancy in both production cycles.

Current approach to disseminated intravascular coagulation related to sepsis-organ failure type

Disseminated intravascular coagulation(DIC) is a syndrome characterized by the systemic activation of blood clotting, which generates large amount of intravascular thrombin and fibrin. Various diseases may cause acceleration of the clotting cascade, inactivate the endogenous anticoagulants and modify fibrinolysis, having thus the formation of micro thrombi in the systemic circulation. The abnormalities in the hemostatic system in patients with DIC result from the sum of pathways that generate both hypercoagulability and augmented fibrinolysis. When the hypercoagulability state prevails, the main manifestation is organic failure. This subtype of DIC is often referred as "organ impairment" type, frequently seen in patients suffering from severe sepsis. To identify the underlying infection, early initiation of culture-based antimicrobial treatment, and to resolve any infection source promptly are keystone actions of DIC related to sepsis prevention and treatment. These should be combined with specific treatment related to each DIC subtype. In the context of septic shock, DIC is associated to increased severity, greater number and seriousness of organ failures, more frequent side-effects from treatment itself, and worse outcomes. Therefore, we ought to review the information available in the literature about approach and management of DIC in severe sepsis.

lignin is a cheap, abundant and non-toxic group of complex phenolic polymers obtained in large amounts from the papermaking and cellulosic biofuel industries. Although the application of lignin has been ex- plored in these and several more industries, there are limited applications of lignin in the energy industry. However, numerous research revealed a great interest in the exploration of this renewable biopolymer in storage energy devices. Some of these applications include the use of lignin as an expander for lead-acid batteries, electrodes for primary and rechargeable batteries, electrodes for electronic double layer capac- itors and electrochemical pseudocapacitors, and to feed different types of fuel cells. The use of lignin in energy storage devices improves not only the performance of these devices but also decreases the price and toxicity, contributing to obtaining greener energy devices. Based on the above, this review provides an overview of the main research work related to the use of lignin as a renewable component, suitable to replace some synthetic and toxic compounds used in the fabrication of energy storage devices with particular emphasis on batteries, advanced supercapacitors, and solar and fuel cells.
