Direct determination of the oxidative potential in exhaled air(OPEA)as a biological indicator of the redox balance status in airways requires an extremely sensitive sensing approach to counterbalance the high dilution of the exhaled air *** opposite to standard colorimetric assays based on Beer-Lambert Law,the use of simple multiscattering-enhanced absorbance(MEA)strategy results in an improved photonic sensing *** on this strategy and using the ferrous-xylenol orange assay,analytical performances allowing the detection of 3 pmol of H_(2)O_(2) could be *** comparative analysis of photometric configurations–standard vs MEA–highlights the large absorbance gain obtained for tiny H_(2)O_(2) amounts–from 0 to 30 pmol–whereas similar sensing trends are observed at higher concentration *** automated introduction of exhaled air sample into the reaction compartment via needle-impinger coupled with the MEA-based photonic cell enables ultrasensitive determination of OPEA in short time(<5 min).A pilot study conducted on healthy subjects(n=22)and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)patients(n=23)volunteers shows a significant increase of the OPEA for COPD versus controls and strong negative correlation between OPEA and spirometry parameters(Tiffeneau index:FEV1/FVC)for ex-/*** perspectives to assess inflammatory episodes in obstructive lung diseases are thus made possible using this sensing approach.

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Postpartum Depression in Yaounde, Cameroon

Introduction: Postpartum Depression is one of the commonest complications of the postpartum period. In Cameroon, little is known about this condition. Our objective was to determine the prevalence and identify the risk factors for postpartum depression. Methodology: The study was carried out at the Yaoundé Gyneco-Obstetric and Pediatric Hospital, from November 4th 2013 to April 4th 2014. All the women between the 4th and 6th week after birth who gave their consent were included. A pretested questionnaire including demographic, psychosocial, maternal and infant variables as well as the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was filled. A woman with an EPDS score ≥12 was considered having postpartum depression, while a score < 12 ruled out a postpartum depression. Results: We recruited 214 women, among whom 50 had an EPDS score ≥ 12, giving a prevalence of 23.4% of postpartum depression. After multivariate analysis, the risk factors of postpartum depression were: lack of satisfaction in the marital relationship, recent financial problems, recent conflicts with the partner, baby blues, difficulties in feeding the baby and problems with the baby’s sleep. Conclusion: Postpartum depression is common and associated to specific risk factors in our setting.

Spermiological Profile of Patients with Varicocele in Cotonou

Objective: To evaluate the effects of varicocele on sperm characteristics, on testicles and its responsibility in male fertility. Patients and Methods: The study took place in the National University Teaching Hospital Hubert Koutoukou Maga of Cotonou. It was a prospective study, from December 2015 to July 2016, which concerned 45 patients affected by the varicocele and seen for infertility. The duration of the infertility was 12 months or more, according to the definition. The studied parameters were the age, the profession, the deadline of the infertility, the type and the rank of the varicocele, the data of the ultrasound and the spermogram. Results: The average age of our patients was 35 years with a range of 20 and 56 years. The average duration of infertility was 3 years and 5 months. The pattern of consultation was a desire of paternity in 71.1% of cases. The testicular hypotrophy was found in 93.3% of cases at the right side and in 97.8% at the left side. The varicocele was bilateral at 82.2% of cases. The most frequent sperm abnormality was the oligoasthenoteratozoospermia found in 31.1% of cases. Conclusion: The varicocele is a male subject pathology. Its consequences on fertility are bad as well as on the volume and the capacity of the testicles to play its endocrine and exocrine function. The better choice is to start the treatment just when it is found in a man. The surgery seems to be the best solution to that important social problem.

The power-law relationship between creep rate decay and time is one of the intrinsic characteristics of metallic *** the current work,a La_(30)Ce_(30)Ni_(10)Al_(20)Co_(10) high-entropy metallic glass was selected as the model alloy to test the influences of physical aging and cyclic loading on the power-law creep mechanism,which was probed by the dynamic mechanical analysis in terms of the stochastic activation,and contiguous interplay and permeation of shear transformation *** is demonstrated that a notable discrepancy appears between thermal treatment and mechanical treatment on the power-law creep mechanism of this high-entropy metallic *** the one hand,physical aging below the glass transition temperature introduces the annihilation of potential shear transformation zones which contribute to *** the other hand,cyclic loading can tailor the“forward”jump operations competing with the“backward”ones of shear transformation zones by controlling the interval time(recovery time).The current research offers a new pathway towards understanding the creep mechanism of high-entropy metallic glasses.

Caesarean Section in African Setting: Current Situation, Problematic and Qualitative Approaches at Laquintinie Hospital (Douala, Cameroon)

Background: Quality control of care aims to reduce or eliminate unnecessary care and to improve the quality of those who are useful both in their indication and in their implementation. Objective: We conducted this study to assess the rate of caesarean section, the rate of irrelevant indications, materno-foetal morbidity and mortality, biases in the management in order to suggest corrective approaches. Methods: It was a cross-sectional study conducted in the gynaeco-obstetrics department of the Laquintinie Hospital of Douala over a period of 4 months from January 1 to April 30, 2017. We included all pregnant women who had a caesarean section and who gave consent to our study as well as new-borns from these caesareans. We excluded caesarean deliveries from other health structures and referred to Laquintinie Hospital due to morbid operative follow-up. The variables collected were grouped under 3 main headings: socio-demographic data, clinical data and post-operative follow-up. Results: A total of 281 caesarean sections were performed out of a total of 967 deliveries;a caesarean section rate of 29.06% in 4 months. After data mining, 250 caesarean sections were included in the study because 31 cases of caesarean deliveries were unusable. Referred pregnancies accounted for 46.8% of the total population and the most common reason for referral was stationary labour (23% of cases). All caesareans were performed by the gynaeco-obstetricians. Women who had caesarean deliveries were informed by the operator of the surgical procedure in 28.4% of cases and 27.6% were notified of the indication for surgery. The operative kit was present in 98% of cases. The operating room was available in 93% of cases. Caesareans were performed mostly in an emergency context (91.2%) with a median turnaround time of 214 minutes (3 h 56 mins). Mechanical dystocia was the major indication in our series (21.2%) and 29 indications were irrelevant (11.6%). Intraoperative complications occurred in 3.2%

Varicocele and DNA Fragmentation in Senegalese Infertile Males—A Study of 95 Cases

Varicocele is the first etiology of infertility in men worldwide and affects almost half of the men dealing with infertility in Senegal. Varicocele is associated with a high rate of sperm DNA fragmentation so this test is being more and more recommended especially when patients have to benefit from an ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) procedure. The aim of our study was to assess if our patients with varicocele are concerned by higher DNA fragmentation rate in spermatozoon. Sperm samples were collected (95 cases of varicocele and 30 controls) and analyzed between January 2013 and June 2016 in a prospective study. Sperm DNA damage, characterized by the rate of DNA fragmentation was evaluated by TUNEL assay using fluorescence microscopy. There was a significant higher percentage of DNA fragmentation in patients with varicocele (p < 0.001), compared to controls. We plan to study a bigger cohort to assess this tendency and study the benefits of surgery in varicocele by evaluating DNA fragmentation after the procedure.

Situation of Artificial Depigmentation among Women in 2016 to Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso

INTRODUCTION: The artificial depigmentation (DA) is a practice that aims to reduce the natural pigmentation of the skin by the use of depigmenting products (DP). In Burkina Faso, few studies have been made on the issue and the last date of 2003. The objective of the study is to realize an overview of the DA phenomenon in women population in Bobo-Dioulasso City. METHODS: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study held from April 16th to April 30th 2016 including 437 women aged from 13 to 55 years old. A multi-stage random sampling was realized A chi-square test was used to compare groups with significant threshold of 5%. RESULTS: The prevalence of the use of DP (67.28% with IC95 = [63.52 - 71.03]). The mean age of users was 27.5 years old;the typical profile was women from 30 to 35 years old (85.7%), with elementary study level, (73.47%), housewife’s (75.19%) and monogamous (71.98%). the products used was those made of hydroquinone (81.6%), EDTA (8.33%), kojic acid (4.86%), mixtures (11.12%) or unknown products (14.58%). The origin of the product was doubtful for almost all the cases (98.96%). The monthly mean cost of this practice for a single user is 1710 CFA. Complications were reported in 62.5% of users, and the most found was dyschromia (85.87%), acne (17.39%) and burns (10.32%). DISCUSSION: The DA is in great progress in Bobo-Dioulasso (2 out of 3 women) compared to half, thirteen years ago. The hydroquinone was markedly the most frequent DP while there was an apparent lack of corticosteroids and mercuries replaced by the new depigmenting agent such as EDTA and kojic acid. This result contrasted with the classic combination hydroquinone-dermocorticoid-mercuries reported by previous studies. CONCLUSION: The low-cost of DP could explain the magnitude of the artificial depigmentation phenomenon. Other studies should be conducted in order to establish with precision the composition of these products and their causality in the occurrence of common complications. Re
