Erectile Dysfunction (ED) within Hospital Facilities in Cotonou

Introduction: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined as the persistent inability to achieve the necessary degree of erection for sexual activity. It is a common disease which can significantly affect the quality of life of sufferer and their partners. The purpose of this study is to give an overview of the magnitude of this medical condition in Benin society. Material and Method: It was a multicenter cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study conducted over a period of one month from 1st to 30th June 2015. A questionnaire was prepared for this purpose. Outcomes: The average age in this series is 48.32 with extremes ranging from 18 to 95 years. These patients were predominantly public servants. All our patients (100% of the study population) responded to the single question of John. B. Mckinlay. The global ED prevalence was 52.6%. The multivariate analysis helped to identify a correlation with several factors associated with ED. These factors included: age, occupation, lifestyle, etc. 41.91% of patients with ED and/or other sexual disorders declared “not at all acceptable” to continue living with these disorders. The patients benefitted from different treatments including IPDE-5 and traditional treatment in respectively 32.8% and 40.1% of cases. Conclusion: ED is a condition in its own which has an impact on the patients’ quality of life. Its discovery may lead to the diagnosis of cardiovascular, hormonal or neurological diseases.

Introduction: The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to decrease the global maternal mortality ratio to below 70 per 100,000 live births and eliminate preventable deaths of newborns and children under the age of five in all countries by 2030. The pediatric department at Spécialisé Mère-Enfant Blanche Gomes Hospital (HSMEBG) is divided into two sectors, one catering to children aged one month to four years and the other dedicated to children aged five to 17 years. According to department records, over the past three years, there has been an average of 1050 hospitalizations per year, with an average duration of five days. Objectives: This study aims to describe the socio-demographic characteristics of children who died while in the pediatrics department of the HSMEBG and analyze the factors associated with their deaths. Methodology: A retrospective analytical cross-sectional study was conducted, collecting data over a three-year period, covering the years 2019, 2020 and 2021. Data were collected from medical records of deceased children using Excel software version 2016, and statistical calculations and logistic regression were performed using Epi info software version 7.***.5.0. Results: During the three years of operation, the pediatric department at HSMEBG recorded 3060 new admissions, of which 271 resulted in death, representing an overall frequency of 8.8%. December and January had the highest mortality rates, accounting for 15.5% and 12.5%, respectively. Out of the 271 recorded deaths, 143 (52.77%) occurred in children under the age of one, and 230 (84.87%) occurred in children under the age of five. The average age at death was 2.4 years, ranging from one month to 17 years. The sex ratio was 1. More than half of the deaths (51.66%) occurred during the night, and 165 (60.89%) sought medical help more than three days after the onset of symptoms. Seric Calcium and Magnesium in Normal and Pre Eclamptic Pregnant Women: A Case-Control Study in Kinshasa, D R Congo

Goal: The present study aimed to determine the profile of seric calcium and magnesium in pre-eclamptic and eclamptic pregnant women of Kinshasa province in the Democratic Republic of Congo where preeclampsia is characterized not only by a high incidence, but also by a seasonal variation probably related to nutritional intake. Study Design: This is a case-control study that took place during the period from September 2014 to March 2015 in four quaternary and tertiary maternity hospitals in Kinshasa. A total of 113 healthy pregnant women (controls) and 112 pre-eclamptic and eclamptic pregnant women (cases) were included in this study. Seric calcium and magnesium were measured in all these gravidas by the principle of spectrophotometry with a HUMALYSER Primus semi-automaton. Results: The mean age of those gravidas was 26.8 ± 6.3 years (26.7 vs 26.9, p = 0.11). The majority of these gravidas were primiparous. The mean gestational age in both groups was 31.35 ± 0.9 weeks (32.1 vs 30.6, p = 0.21). The average seric calcium value was 4.47 ± 0.23 mEq /L in healthy pregnant women compared to 3.80 ± 0.71 mEq/l in pre-eclamptics (P 0.001). The mean of seric magnesium was 1.56 ± 0.15 mg/dL in healthy pregnant women compared to 1.20 ± 0.41 mg/dL in pre eclamptics (P 0.001). Seric calcium and magnesium values were low in the pre-eclamptic group and lower in the eclamptic group (P 0.001). Conclusion: This study establishes a relationship between the low concentration of seric calcium and magnesium with pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, which could be one of the determinants of the high prevalence and seasonality of the disease in Kinshasa.

Introduction: The presence of vascular complications at type 2 diabetes (T2D) diagnosis is a heavy burden for developing countries. We aimed to determine the prevalence and correlates of macrovascular complications at T2D diagnosis in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study at the Essos Hospital Center in Yaoundé from January 2017 to June 2021. We recruited patients newly diagnosed with T2D who, simultaneously, with assessed macrovascular complications including stroke, myocardial infarction (MI) and arterial foot ulcer (AFU). Correlates were investigated using Chi square test and logistic regressions. The significance level was set at 5%. Results: In all, 286 newly diagnosed diabetic patients (51.7% being men) were included. The mean age was 52.6 ± 12.3 years. Prevalent cardiovascular risk factors at diabetes diagnosis were a dyslipidemia (63.6%), sedentary lifestyle (57.7%) and family history of type 2 diabetes (51.6%). The prevalence of macrovascular complications was 17.5% with 8.4% stroke, 5.6% myocardial infarction and 3.4% arterial foot ulcer. Hypertension was associated with all macrovascular complications (p Conclusion: Macrovascular complications are frequent at type 2 diabetes diagnosis and are represented by stroke and myocardial infarction in our study, highlighting the importance of cardiovascular risk evaluation and reduction in people with diabetes right from diagnosis.

There has been a growing interest over the past few years in the impact of male nutrition on fertility. Infertility has been linked to male overweight or obesity, and conventional semen parameter values seem to be altered in case of high body mass index （BMI）. A few studies assessing the impact of BMI on sperm DNA integrity have been published, but they did not lead to a strong consensus. Our objective was to explore further the relationship between sperm DNA integrity and BMI, through a 3-year multicentre study. Three hundred and thirty male partners in subfertile couples were included. Using the terminal uridine nick-end labelling （TUNEL） assay, we observed an increased rate of sDerm DNA damage in obese men （odds ratio （95% confidence interval）： 2.5 （1.2-5.1））.

＜正＞High pressure research has entered the era of high-end state of the art measurements, especially in the field of synchrotron x-ray research. Nowadays, a large number of techniques are readily available and applicable in conjunction with the most widely used high pressure apparatus, namely the diamond anvil cell. In the past years, diffraction constituted the largest part of high-pressure synchrotron-based x-ray research, along with limited efforts in the field of x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The appearance of high-energy third generation x-ray sources （ESRF, APS, SPring-8） allowed extremely brilliant x-ray beams to be focused down to very small sizes, due to the conjunction of high flux, small source size and divergence, and high coherence. With the help of an x-ray spectrometer set up in the Rowland geometry （figure 1） and low-Z （x-ray transparent） gaskets, a wide variety of high-resolution spectroscopic techniques can be accessed. We will briefly present techniques such as high resolution x-ray emission as local probe for magnetism and electronic modifications, as well as resonant x-ray scattering （x-ray Raman）. Inelastic x-ray scattering with ultra-high resolution allows us to access the vibrational properties （acoustic and optical phonons） of materials. These new techniques allowed us to investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of wiistite （FeO）, hematite （Fe2O3） and iron （Fe） well into the megabar pressure range. FeO is shown to become a paramagnetic compound at high pressure, and a closed-loop anti-ferromagnetic stability domain is depicted [1]. The vibrational properties （longitudinal and transverse sound wave velocities, and optical phonons in some cases） of iron （Fe） [2] and iron-bearing compounds （FeSi, FeS, FeS2, and FeO） [3-4] were measured to megabar pressures by ultra-high resolution （4 meV） inelastic x-ray scattering, along with the acoustic phonon dispersion curves.
