The Effect of Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillation on Mixed Layer and Upper Ocean Temperature over the South China Sea

Intraseasonal oscillation of the mixed layer and upper ocean temperature has been found to occur over the South China Sea(SCS)in the summer monsoon season based on the multiple reanalysis and observational data in this study.The method of composite analysis and an upper ocean temperature equation assisted the analysis of physical mechanisms.The results show that the mixed layer depth(MLD)in the SCS has a significant oscillation with a 30-60 d period over the SCS region,which is closely related to boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation(BSISO)activities.The MLD can increase(decrease)during the positive(negative)phase of the BSISO and usually lags behind by approximately one-eighth of the lifecycle(5 days)of the BSISO-related convection.The BSISO may cause periodic anomalies at the air-sea boundary,such as wind stress and heat flux,so it can play a dominant role in modulating the variation in MLD.There also are significant intraseasonal seawater temperature anomalies in both the surface and subsurface layers of the SCS.In addition,during the initial phase of the BSISO,the temperature anomaly signals of the thermocline are obviously opposite to the sea surface temperature(SST),especially in the southern SCS.According to the results from the analysis of the temperature equation,the vertical entrainment term caused by BSISO-related wind stress is stronger than the thermal forcing during the initial stage of convection,and it is more significant in the southern SCS.

Role of the Subtropical Westerly Jet Waveguide in a Southern China Heavy Rainstorm in December 2013

An extreme rainstorm hit southern China during 13–17 December 2013, with a record-breaking daily rainfall rate, large spatial extent, and unusually long persistence. We examined what induced this heavy rainfall process, based on observed rainfall data and NCEP–NCAR reanalysis data through composite and diagnostic methods. The results showed that a Rossby waveguide within the subtropical westerly jet caused the event. The Rossby wave originated from strong cold air intrusion into the subtropical westerly jet over the eastern Mediterranean. With the enhancement and northward shift of the Middle East westerly jet, the Rossby wave propagated slowly eastward and deepened the India–Burma trough, which transported a large amount of moisture from the Bay of Bengal and South China Sea to southern China. Strong divergence in the upper troposphere, caused by the enhancement of the East Asian westerly jet, also favored the heavy rainfall process over Southeast China. In addition, the Rossby wave was associated with a negative-to-positive phase shift and enhancement of the North Atlantic Oscillation, but convergence in the eastern Mediterranean played the key role in the eastward propagation of the Rossby wave within the subtropical westerly jet.

Spatial Distribution and Seasonal Variation of Explosive Cyclones over the North Atlantic

Spatial distribution and seasonal variation of explosive cyclones(ECs) over the North Atlantic from October 2000 to September 2016 are investigated using the reanalysis data of Final Analysis(FNL),Mean Sea Level Pressure(MSLP) and Optimum Interpolation(OI) Sea Surface Temperature(SST) provided by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction(NCEP),the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ECMWF) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA),respectively.Considering the meridional distribution of ECs and 10-m height wind field associated with the ECs,the definition of EC given by Yoshida and Asuma(2004) is modified.It is found that the ECs occurred mainly in four regions during winter season,namely,North America continent(NAC),the Northwest Atlantic(NWA),the North-central Atlantic(NCA),and the Northeast Atlantic(NEA),depending on the spatial distribution of EC's maximum deepening rate of central sea level pressure(SLP).According to the magnitude of maximum deepening rate,the trend of EC numbers basically decrease with the increase of EC's maximum deepening rate over the North Atlantic during the whole time period.Over the North Atlantic basin,for monthly statistics,the NEA,NCA,and NWA cyclones occur mainly in December,from December to March,and from January to February,respectively.NWA,NCA and NEA cyclones in winter are associated with low-level baroclinicity,both low-level baroclinicity and upper-level forcing and upper-level forcing,respectively.According to monthly variation,the averaged maximum deepening rate of central SLP firstly increases and then decreases from July to June.Overall,the distribution of ECs' tracks is basically in the southwest-northeast direction.During winter circulation stage(from October to May),the averaged maximum deepening rate of central SLP and the averaged minimum central SLP of ECs decrease,and the averaged explosive-deepening duration of ECs shortens from west to east over the North Atlantic basin.During summer circulation stage(from June to Septe

Analysis of the Anomalous Strength and Location of the ITCZ Affecting the Formation of Northern Pacific Typhoons

Using the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis dataset from 1959-2004, the location and strength of the ITCZ (Inter-Tropical Con- vergence Zone), as well as their relations with typhoons in the northwestern Pacific were studied. It was found that the pentad loca- tion and strength of the ITCZ had close relations with the typhoon frequency. Higher latitude location or strengthened ITCZ were found to be favorable for the occurrence of typhoons over the Northwestern Pacific. An index was defined for ascertaining the loca- tion of the ITCZ. It was found that the index defined with the maximum value of pentad and monthly meridional shear of zonal wind speed could better describe the location of ITCZ than another index defined with the maximum value of convergence. Correlation analysis between the index of ITCZ and the maximum cloud cover in the tropics showed that there were close relations between the ITCZ determined by the index and the maximum tropical cloud belt. The strength index of an ITCZ was defined as the zonal wind speed difference at latitudes south and north of the ITCZ. It was found that there are close relations between the ITCZ intensity and typhoon occurrence in the South China Sea [10°N-20°N,100°E-120°E] and regions east of the Philippines and near the Mariana Islands [5°N-20°N, 127.5°E-150°E].

Impact of Autumn SST in the Japan Sea on Winter Rainfall and Air Temperature in Northeast China

We studied the impact of sea surface temperature anomaly(SSTA) in the Japan Sea and the sea area east of Japan on the winter rainfall and air temperature in Northeast(NE) China using the singular value decomposition(SVD) and empirical orthogonal function(EOF). The monthly-mean rainfall data observed at 160 stations in China, monthly-mean sea surface temperature(SST) of the Hadley Center for Climate Prediction and Research and monthly-mean air temperature from the NCEP reanalysis during 1960–2011 were used. Correlation analysis indicates that the SSTAs in the Japan Sea in September may last for three or four months and are an important index for forecasting the winter rainfall and air temperature in NE China. Positive SSTAs in the central Japan Sea and in the sea area east of Tokyo correspond to positive rainfall anomaly and negative air temperature anomaly in NE China. With the rise of SST in the Japan Sea, a weak cyclone appears over the Japan Sea. The northeasterly wind transports water vapor from the Okhotsk to NE China, resulting in more rainfall and lower air temperature. Negative SSTA years are accompanied by warmer air temperature and less snow in NE China. The 1000 h Pa geopotential height anomaly and wind anomaly fields are simulated by IAP-9L model, which supports the analysis results.

Characteristics of Thermal and Geopotential Height Differences Between Continent and Ocean and Its Role in the Strength of the Asian Summer Monsoon

The interdecadal factors affecting the summer monsoon winds over Somalia and the South China Sea were studied. Global geopotential heights and wind velocity fields of the 850-hPa and 200-hPa pressure levels, as well as sea surface temperature anomaly data and correlation coefficients were analyzed. The monsoons over Somalia and the South China Sea were found to be two different monsoon systems, operating on different mechanisms and being affected by different oceanatmosphere interactions. The intensity of the Asian subtropical summer monsoon is influenced by the intensity of the summer monsoon over Somalia in the month of June and by the intensity of the summer monsoon over the South China Sea in the months of June and July. The summer monsoon wind strength over Somalia is affected by regional factors, such as the heating of the Tibetan plateau, and by global mechanisms, such as the subtropical heat exchange with Antarctica. The summer monsoon over the South China Sea is affected by different ocean-atmosphere interactions. The Somalia and subtropical summer monsoons have wind blowing down the pressure gradient from area over ocean to that over land, like typical summer monsoons. The South China Sea summer monsoon has winds that blow down the pressure gradient from area over land to that over ocean. The South China Sea summer monsoon is affected by the Kuroshio Current off the east coast of Japan.

Seasonal and Interdecadal Variations of Heat Transport over the Northern Hemisphere

Using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data, variations of heat transport in the Northern Hemisphere were studied. It was found that there are interdecadal variations in heat transport from middle latitudes to higher latitudes. The variations of interdecadal heat transport over longitudes around 120°E are out of phase with those over around 90°E and over the Northeastern Pacific. The seasonal variations of heat transport were also discussed. It was found that most heat is transported in the lower layer of the troposphere from middle latitudes to higher latitudes. Over around 120°E and over around 120°W, the seasonal and interannual variations of heat transport across 32.5°N are apparent and in phase.

目的:探讨脑脊液中降钙素原(PCT)及白细胞介素-6(IL-6)的表达对开颅术后无菌性脑膜炎的诊断价值。方法:回顾性分析2019年2月—2021年2月于泰州市第四人民医院神经外科行开颅手术的126例患者临床资料,根据脑脊液白细胞计数(WBC)>100×10^(6)/L且葡萄糖(GLU)<2.5 mmol/L将手术患者分成化脓性脑膜炎组(30例)和无菌性脑膜炎组(96例)。对两组患者的一般资料进行分析,采用单因素和多因素Logistic回归分析脑脊液化脓性、无菌性脑膜炎的相关危险因素,应用受试者工作特征(ROC)曲线下面积(AUC)分析WBC、GLU、PCT、IL-6在鉴别化脓性和无菌性脑膜炎中的诊断效能。结果:单因素和多因素Logistic回归分析显示,化脓性和无菌性脑膜炎患者脑脊液PCT、IL-6、WBC、GLU水平比较,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。脑脊液PCT、IL-6、WBC、GLU是鉴别化脓性脑炎、无菌性脑膜炎的重要指标。结论:脑脊液中PCT及IL-6的表达对开颅术后无菌性脑膜炎的诊断及治疗有实际临床指导价值。

A 38-Year Climatology of Explosive Cyclones over the Northern Hemisphere

Explosive cyclones(ECs)over two basins in the Northern Hemisphere(20°-90°N)from January 1979 to December2016 are investigated using ERA-Interim and Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature(OISST)data.The classical definition of an EC is modified considering not only the rapid drop of the central sea level pressure of the cyclone,but also the strong wind speed at the height of 10 m in which maximum wind speeds greater than 17.2 m s^-1are included.According to the locations of the northern Atlantic and northern Pacific,the whole Northern Hemisphere is divided into the"A region"(20°-90°N,90°W-90°E)and"P region"(20°-90°N,90°E-90°W).Over both the A and P regions,the climatological features of ECs,such as their spatial distribution,intensity,seasonal variation,interannual variation,and moving tracks,are documented.

中国新诗发端于新文化运动中的“白话诗”,而“白话”作为新诗赖以存在的语体,它是在当时人们日常口语的基础上,经过传统白话语言和欧化语体等多重作用而形成的一种语言形式。尽管白话诗中的“白话”不等于口语,但它与口语的关系最为密切。“白话”本质上就是一种叙述语言,所以,白话诗具有赖以存在的叙述基因和要素。虽然白话、口语一直是百年新诗史上最为重要的焦点话题之一,并且以不同面目反复出现,但真正能与新文化运动中的白话诗相提并论的,也只有20世纪80年代出现的口语写作思潮。无论“前口语”还是“后口语”,实质上都是一种叙述语体,并且以此前后呼应、影响,从而形成了大面积的诗歌叙述风气和思潮。如从历史过程看,无论是新文化运动中的白话叙述诗,还是新时期启蒙年代的口语叙述性写作,均为中国现代诗的叙述学提供了典型文本和叙述思想。
