Are yarn quality prediction tools useful in the breeding of high yielding and better fibre quality cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.)?

Results The population had large variations for lint yield,fibre properties,predicted yarn properties,and composite fibre quality values.Lint yield with all fibre quality traits was not correlated.When the selection was conducted first to keep those with improved fibre quality,and followed for high yields,a large proportion in the resultant populations was the same between selections based on Cottonspec predicted yarn quality and HVI-measured fibre properties.They both exceeded the selection based on FQI and Background The approach of directly testing yarn quality to define fibre quality breeding objectives and progress the selection is attractive but difficult when considering the need for time and labour.The question remains whether yarn prediction tools from textile research can serve as an alternative.In this study,using a dataset from three seasons of field testing recombinant inbred line population,Cottonspec,a software developed by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation(CSIRO)for predicting ring spun yarn quality from fibre properties measured by High Volume Instrument(HVI),was used to select improved fibre quality and lint yield in the population.The population was derived from an advanced generation inter-crossing of four CSIRO conventional commercial varieties.The Cottonspec program was able to provide an integrated index of the fibre qualities affecting yarn properties.That was compared with selection based on HVI-measured fibre properties,and two composite fibre quality variables,namely,fibre quality index(FQI),and premium and discount(PD)points.The latter represents the net points of fibre length,strength,and micronaire based on the Premiums and Discounts Schedule used in the market while modified by the inclusion of elongation.PD points.Conclusions The population contained elite segregants with improved yield and fibre properties,and Cottonspec predicted yarn quality is useful to effectively capture these elites.There is a need to further develop yarn quality prediction too

Understanding sheep baa-haviour: Investigating the relationship between pasture and animal grazing patterns

Background:Grasslands are the primary source of feed for grazing livestock,and as such,knowledge on how to best manage livestock and grasslands,through the use of spatiotemporal modelling,will assist in the long-term management of a valuable ecosystem resource.Methods:This study was conducted over 14 months between March and April 2017 in Orange,NSW,Australia.The study evaluated sheep behaviour in relation to the presence of pasture species,environment and paddock structures,using random forest modelling,to predict sheep location under continuous high(HSR,13 DSE ha−1)and low(LSR,7DSE ha−1)stocking rates.Results:In the LSR,significant drivers included water,shade and fence lines(p<0.01).In the HSR,only fence lines and available biomass were found to be significant(p<0.01).The presence of green legumes in both stocking rates often increased residency by sheep.Animals spent more time together in the LSR,suggesting that social behaviour played a larger role than pasture quantity and quality in driving grazing behaviours.Conclusions:Understanding how pasture type can influence grazing behaviours and also how animal behaviour affects pasture performance and utilisation is important in developing long-term sustainable management strategies on a paddock scale.

Freeliving marine nematodes as a pollution indicator of the Bohai Sea

A hierarchical diversity index—taxonomic distinctness index Δ +, which was first defined by warwick and Clark in 1998, was employed to evaluate the pollution status of the Bohai Sea with freeliving marine nematodes. The result showed that the Bohai Bay and other coastal sampling sites might be affected by oil and gas production and other anthropogenic influences. In other words,anthropogenic disturbance was affecting this component of the benthos in these locations. And most offshore sampling sites in the middle of the Bohai Sea were clear and unpolluted.

Posttraumatic incarceration of medial collateral ligament into knee joint with anterior cruciate ligament injury

Medial collateral ligament of the knee is an important coronal stabiliser and often injured in isolation or as combination of injuries. The article reports a case of incarcerated medial collateral ligament （MCL） injury in combination with anterior cruciate ligament （ACL） injury in 20 year old male who presented to us 4 weeks after injury. Clinical examination and MRI was correlated to complete ACL tear with torn distal MCL and incarceration into the joint. Patient was taken up for ACL hamstring graft reconstruction with mini-arthrotomy and repair of the torn MCL. Patient was followed up with dedicated rehabilitation protocol with good functional results. At one year follow-up, patient exhibited full range of motion with negative Lachman, Pivot shift and valgus stress tests. This article highlights the rare pattern of MCL tear and also reviews the literature on this pattern of injury.

Global Energy and Environmental Impacts of an Expanding China

China accounts for 10 percent of global energy use and will continue to rely on coal for generating approximately 75 percent of its energy over coming decades. The environmental problems associated with coal burning are a concern for China as well as regionally and globally. The present paper summarizes China＇s energy structure and likely future energy requirements, while exploring the impact of energy use on air quality, black carbon emission, sulphur dioxide （SO2） emissions, and carbon dioxide emissions. Although China has begun to take action on local environmental problems from energy, there is still much to be done. In particular, the problem of black carbon and carbon dioxide emissions needs to be addressed. The present paper proposes addressing carbon dioxide emissions through a longer-term strategy that acknowledges the need for China to continue to grow without a short-term carbon constraint but with clear pricing of the short-term and long-term cost of carbon dioxide.

A blockchain-based multisignature approach for supply chain governance:A use case from the Australian beef industry

This paper designed and implemented a blockchain-based multisignature approach to digitally transform supply chain governance in multi-tier food supply chains,particularly in a geographically dispersed beef supply chain.An exploratory case study was utilised to demonstrate the design,implementation,and evaluation of a blockchainbased multisignature approach that was deployed on the Smart Trade Networks(STN)Proof of Authority(PoA)blockchain system for data collection and validation in a beef supply chain context.The multisignature approach was implemented with a use case to track a shipment of 92 cattle and meat products through key events from farm to food service.The use-case deployment records approximately 6000 data points registered on the STN PoA blockchain system.The real-case deployment illustrates the capability of the blockchain-based multisignature approach to digitally improve beef supply chain governance by enabling whole-of-chain transparency and trustworthy information sharing and supports supply chain professionals to have a better understanding of how to unlock blockchain potential for supply chain transformation.

Fixed bimonthly aflibercept in nave and switched neovascular age-related macular degeneration patients:one year outcomes

AIM: To determine real life clinical outcomes in poorly responsive and treatment-nave neovascular age-related macular degeneration(nv AMD) patients using bimonthly fixed dosing aflibercept regimen.METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 165 eyes with nv AMD started on aflibercept at Southampton Eye Unit between June 2013 and June 2014. Patients were either switched from pro re nata(PRN) ranibizumab/bevacizumab due to poor response(107 eyes), or treatment- nave( 58 eyes). Patients initially received 3-monthly intravitreal aflibercept injections followed by 2-monthly fixed doses. Clinic visits were scheduled at month 0, 4, 10 and 12. Mean change in best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA) and central retinal thickness(CRT)from baseline were assessed using the Wilcoxon signedrank test. The proportion of patients maintaining BCVA(<15 letters loss) at 12 mo was also evaluated.RESULTS: Mean BCVA change at month 12 was +3.29 and +4.67 letters in the switched and nave aflibercept groups respectively(P <0.01). BCVA was maintained in 95.3% of switched and 96.6% of nave patients. CRT at month 12 showed a decrease of -6.16 μm in the switched group and -35.36 μm in the nave group(P <0.01).Patients previously treated with ranibizumab/bevacizumab had on average received 7.4 ranibizumab/bevacizumab injections over 12.6 mo, attending 10 clinic visits. The fixed dosing aflibercept regimen required an average of 7.1 injections(nave group), 7.5 injections(switched group) and 4 clinic visits per year.CONCLUSION: Fixed bimonthly aflibercept is effective in both treatment-nave and poorly responsive nv AMD patients. Adopting a fixed dosing regimen can reduce patient burden without compromising on outcomes.

Oviposition preference and larval performance of Epiphyas postvittana （Lepidoptera： Tortricidae） on Botrytis cinerea （Helotiales： Sclerotiniaceae） infected berries of Vitis vinifera （Vitales： Vitaceae）

In this paper we tested the behavior of gravid Epiphyas postvittana in select- ing the most-appropriate site for oviposition thus benefitting offspring performance. Our hypothesis was built on Jaenike＇s preference-performance hypothesis （also referred to as the ＂mother-knows-the-best＂ hypothesis）. To test this, we used the interacting Epiphyas postvittana, its host Vitis vinifera, and the pathogenic microbe Botrytis cinerea system. Populations ofE. postvittana and B. cinerea often exist concurrently on 14. vinifera in Aus- tralasia and their interaction and mutual influence are currently being explored, although the suggestion presently is that the relationship between E. postvittana and B. cinerea is mutualistic. We tested the effect of volatiles from B. cinerea-infected berries and unin- fected （control） berries of V. vinifera on the oviposition behavior of E. postvittana. We also characterized the effects of B. cinerea infection on the berries of V. vinifera on the growth and development of E. postvittana. Contrary to the preference-performance hy- pothesis, oviposition choices made by gravid E. postvittana did not result in the best offspring survival, development, and performance. The preference for oviposition by E. postvittana was strongly influenced by the olfactory and tactile cues. She laid fewer eggs on B. cinerea-infected berries compared to uninfected berries of V. vinifera. The larvae of E. postvittana showed no preference to uninfected berries of V. vinifera. The larvae fed on B. cinerea-infected berries of V. vinifera showing greater survival rate, shorter time to pupation, greater pupal mass, and on becoming adults they laid more numbers of eggs than the larvae that were enabled to feed on uninfected berries. The larvae of E. postvittana transport the conidia of B. cinerea and transmit grey-mould disease to uninfected berries of V. vinifera.

Evaluation of obstetrics procedure competency of family medicine residents

Objective:To establish a procedure evaluation system to monitor residents’improvement in obstetrics(OB)procedures performance and skills during the training period.Methods:A web-based procedure logging and evaluation system was developed using *** technology with a SQL server as a backend database.Residents’logged OB proce-dures were captured by the system.The OB procedures logged within 7 days were evaluated by supervising faculty using three observable outcomes(procedure competency,procedure-related medical knowledge level,and patient care).Results:Between 1 July 2005 and 30 June 2008,a total of 8543 procedures were reported,of which 1263 OB procedures were evaluated by supervising faculty.There were significant varia-tions in the number of logged procedures by gender,residency track,and US versus non-US medi-cal graduates.Approximately 84%of the procedures were performed(independently or with assis-tance)by residents.Residents’procedure skills,procedure-related medical knowledge,and patient care skills improved over time,with significant variations by gender among the three outcomes.Conclusion:The benefits of specific evaluation of procedural competence in postgraduate medical education are well established.Innovative and reliable tools to assess and monitor resi-dents’procedural skills are warranted.
