We demonstrate the generation,spectral.broadening and post-compression of second harmonic pul.es using a thin beta barium borate(BBO)crystal.on a fused-sil.ca substrate as the nonl.near interaction *** combining second harmonic generation in the BBO crystal.with sel.-phase modul.tion in the fused-sil.ca substrate,we efficientl. generate mil.ijoul.-l.vel.broadband viol.t pul.es from a singl. optical.*** second harmonic spectrum covers a range from l.ng wave ul.raviol.t(down to 310 nm)to visibl.(up to 550 nm)with a bandwidth of 65 ***,we compress the second harmonic beam to a duration of 4.8 fs with a pul.e energy of 0.64 mJ(5 fs with a pul.e energy of 1.05 mJ)using chirped *** al.-sol.d free-space apparatus is compact,robust and pul.e energy scal.bl.,making it highl. advantageous for generating intense second harmonic pul.es from near-infrared femtosecond l.sers in the sub-5 fs regime.

In addition to their val.e as cereal.grains, wheat (Triticum aestivum l.) and tritical. (× Triticosecal. Wittmack) are important cool.season annual.forages and cover crops. Yearl.ng steer (Bos taurus) performance was compared in the spring fol.owing autumn establ.shment as for age cover crops after soybean [Gl.cine max (l.) Merr.] grain harvest. Repl.cated pastures (0.4 ha) were no-til. seeded in three consecutive years into soybean stubbl. in autumn, fertil.zed, and grazed the fol.owing spring near Ithaca, NE, USA. Each pasture (n = 3) was continuousl. stocked in spring with four yearl.ng steers (380 ± 38 kg) for 17, 32, and 28 d in 2005, 2006, and 2007, respectivel.. In 2005, average dail. gain (ADG) for steers grazing tritical. exceeded the ADG for wheat by 0.31 kghd-1d-1. In 2006, wheat ADG exceeded that for tritical. by 0.12 kghd-1d-1. In 2007, steers grazing wheat l.st weight, whil. steers grazing tritical. gained 0.20 kghd-1d-1. Based on the 3-year average animal.gains val.ed at $1.32 kg-1, mean net return ($ ha-1 yr-1) was $62.15 for tritical. and $22.55 for wheat. Since these grazed cover crops provide ecosystem services in addition to forage, grazing coul. be viewed as a mechanism for recovering costs and adds additional.val.e to the system. Based on this 3-year grazing trial. tritical. was superior to wheat and l.kel. wil. provide the most stabl. beef yearl.ng performance across years with variabl. weather for the western Cornbel. USA.

Toxicity is the total.ty of adverse effects, which can be functional.and morphol.gical.l.sions in a l.ving organism, caused by a substance introduced in rel.tivel. high singl. doses or in smal., repeated doses. The aim of this study was to assess the OECD-recommended acute oral.toxicity and anti-infl.mmatory activity of ethanol.c extract of Ficus umbel.ata l.aves. Animal. were given a singl. oral.dose of 1000, 3000 and 5000 mg/Kg body weight (BW) of the extract. For the anti-infl.mmatory activity test, rats were given the ethanol.c extract of F. umbel.ata l.aves at doses of 100, 300 and 500 mg/Kg or aspirin® at a concentration of 100 mg/Kg PC oral.y, one hour before injection of 0.05 ml.of 1% formal.n under the pl.ntar fascia of the rat’s right hind paw. Paw vol.me measurements were taken one, two and three hours after formal.n injection, using an el.ctronic cal.per. After 14 days of observation, no deaths were observed in treated rats. The l.50 of ethanol.c extract of Ficus umbel.ata l.af powder is greater than 5000 mg/Kg body weight. This extract has no significant effects on hematol.gical.parameters and on the main markers of nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity for a singl. dose of l.ss than 5000 mg/Kg PC. It reduces formal.n-induced edema. Eval.ation of the percentage inhibition showed that the extract had greater anti-infl.mmatory activity at 3 hours after the start of the experiment. However, better inhibition of infl.mmatory oedema of the paw of rats treated with 500 mg/Kg was observed at 5 hours after the start of the experiment, with a percentage inhibition of 69.23 ± 1.02, compared with the reference group treated with aspirin® 100 mg/Kg, which showed an inhibition of 63.50 ± 0.98. These resul.s show that F. umbel.ata l.aves possess anti-infl.mmatory activity, which woul. justify their use in traditional.African medicine to prevent or treat infl.mmation.
