There are two factors,source composition and magmatic differentiation,potentially controlling W-Sn *** one is more important is widely debated and may need to be determined for each individual *** Xitian granite batholith located in South China is a natural laboratory for investigating the above *** consists essentially of two separate components,formed in the Triassic at ca.226 Ma and Jurassic at ca.152 Ma,*** Triassic and Jurassic rocks are both composed of porphyritic and fine-grained *** latter resulted from highlydifferentiated porphyritic ones but they have similar textural characteristics and mineral assemblages,indicating that they reached a similar degree of crystal *** both fine-grained phases are highly differentiated with elevated rare metal contents,economic W–Sn mineralization is rare in the Triassic granitoids and this can be attributed to less fertile source materials than their Jurassic counterparts,with a slightly more enriched isotopic signature and whole-rockεNd(226 Ma)of−10.4 to−9.2(2σ=0.2)compared withεNd(152 Ma)of−9.2 to−8.2(2σ=0.2)for the Jurassic *** initial W-Sn enrichment was derived from the metasedimentary rocks and strongly enhanced by reworking of the continental crust,culminating in the Jurassic.

An examination by GC×GC-TOFMS of organic molecules present inhighly degraded oils emerging from Caribbean terrestrial seeps of Cretaceous age

For our ancestors, oil seeps were both a fascination and a resource but as the planet's reserves of high quality low density oil becomes increasingly depleted, so there is now a renewed interest in heavier,biodegraded oils such as those encountered in terrestrial seeps. One such seep is Pitch Lake in the Caribbean island of Trinidad, which is the largest natural deposit of asphalt in the world. At the northern end of the Caribbean, oil emerges along a tectonic contact on the island on Cuba. The sources of the oils from these seeps are relatively recent and both are subject to intense weathering due to the tropical conditions. When analysed by gas chromatography(GC) both oils appear as unresolved complex mixtures(UCM) and show a very high degree of biodegradation thus presenting an analytical challenge. In this case study, these two Caribbean seep oils were analysed by comprehensive two dimensional GC with time of flight mass spectrometry(GC×GC-TOFMS) to expose many thousands of the individual compounds that comprise the UCM. The high chromatographic resolution of the GC×GC-TOFMS produced good quality mass spectra allowing many compounds including molecular fossil ‘biomarkers' to be identified. Compound classes included diamondoid hydrocarbons, demethylated hopanes and secohopanes, mono-and tri-aromatic steroids. D-ring aromatised structures of the 8,14-seco-hopanes,including demethylated forms were present in both oils but further demethylation, probably at position C-25 during biodegradation, was only observed in the Pitch Lake oil. Many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) were absent although the fungal-derived pentacyclic PAH perylene was present in both oils. The presence of the angiosperm biomarker lupane in the Pitch Lake oil constrained the age to the Late Cretaceous. The higher degree of biodegradation observed in the Cuban oil was likely due to relatively slow anaerobic processes whereas oil within Pitch Lake was probably subject to additional more rapid

Objective The modem Earth is characterized by two types of orogens： collisional orogen and accretionary orogen. It is widely accepted that the Central Asian Orogenic Belt （CAOB） is made up of widespread multiple ancient archipelagos. It has been recognized as a non-collisional orogen, contrasting with the archetypical Alpine- Himalayan-type collisional orogens. Although the CAOB is traditionally compared to subduction-accretion systems that have been well studied, all accretionary orogens ultimately passed into a collisional phase at the end of the orogenic Wilson cycle due to ocean closure and termination of subduction, which will lead to subsequent crustal shortening, thickening and reworking. Therefore, the archipelago-type CAOB may also preserve a terminal collision record, although this is not a classic continental collision at all.

Recent decades have witnessed an increasing number of studies investigating petroleum systems with the application of rhenium-osmium(Re-Os) isotopic geochemistry. Here, we review the use of the 187 Re-187 Os geochronometer with respect to the geochemical behaviour of rhenium and osmium in hydrocarbon-related geological processes. The Re-Os budget in hydrocarbon source rock predominantly originates from natural water columns during its deposition. Open seawater tends to have a homogeneous Os isotopic composition because its residence time in seawater is longer than the time taken for ocean mixing. On the contrary, restricted water bodies(e.g., lakes) may have heterogeneous Os isotopic compositions due to the greater amount of terrigenous input. Hydrogenous Re and Os atoms are sequestered from the water body into sedimentary organic matter and transferred into crude oil through thermal maturation of organic matter. Thermal maturation likely does not significantly alter the Re-Os isotopic systematics of the source rock as a Re-Os isochron age of 442±21 Ma(2σ) is yielded in this study for over matured source rocks within the Silurian Longmaxi Formation from the Sichuan Basin. Re-Os atoms are mainly hosted by the highly polar/aggregating/aromatic asphaltenes in hydrocarbons, possibly chelating with organic complexes or occurring as metalloporphyrins. Resin and aromatic hydrocarbons also contribute to the Re-Os budget, but are 2 to 3 orders of magnitude lower than that of asphaltenes, whereas saturates do not contain appreciable Re-Os contents. The distribution of Re-Os atoms in hydrocarbons is heterogeneous because the duplicate analysis of pure single bitumen samples yields similar ^(187)Os/^(188)Os ratios whereas variable ^(187)Re/^(188)Os ratios. The Re-Os system in crude oils can be reset during transport away from the source rocks, with Os-rich organic fractions more readily expelled than Re-rich fractions. Decoupling between Oxygen and Radiogenic Isotopes: Evidence for Generation of Juvenile Continental Crust by Partial Melting of Subducted Oceanic Crust

There is increasing evidence indicating that melts derived from subducted oceanic crust and sediments may have played a key role in building continental crust. This mechanism predicts that juvenile arc crust should have oxygen isotope characteristics ranging from mantle-like to supracrustal, but consistent mantle-like radiogenic(Nd-Hf) isotopic signatures. Here we present in-situ zircon U-Pb dating, Hf-O isotope analyses, and whole rock major-trace element and Nd isotope analyses of a granitoid from NW India. In-situ secondary ion mass spectrometry(SIMS) zircon U-Pb dating yields a weighted mean ^(207)Pb/^(206)Pb age of 873±6 Ma for the granitoid. It displays mantle-like zircon εHf(εHf(873 Ma)= +9.3 to +10.9) and whole-rock Nd(εNd(873 Ma)= +3.5) values but supracrustal δ^(18)O values, the latter mostly varying between 9‰ and 10‰. The calculated whole-rock δ^(18)O value of 11.3‰±0.6‰ matches well with those of hydrothermally-altered pillow lavas and sheeted dykes from ophiolites. The major and trace element composition of the granitoid is similar to petrological experimental melts derived from a mixture of MORB+sediments. Thus, the granitoid most likely represents the product of partial melting of the uppermost oceanic crust(MORB+sediments). We propose that the decoupling between Hf-Nd and O isotopes as observed in this granitoid can be used as a powerful tool for the identification of slab melting contributing to juvenile continental crustal growth. Such isotopic decoupling can also account for high δ^(18)O values observed in ancient juvenile continental crust, such as Archean tonalitetrondhjemite-granodiorite suites.

The Bayan Obo REE-Nb-Fe deposit hosts the world’s largest known REE *** deposit consists of replacement bodies hosted in dolomite marble and of magnetite,REE fluorocarbonates, fluorite aegirine,amphibole,calcite,and *** types of fluid inclusions have been recognized: two-phase aqueous liquid-vapor(L-V),two-to three-phase CO(C),and three-phase liquid-vapor-solid (L-V-S) *** measurements indicate that the carbonic phase in C inclusions is nearly pure *** heating experiments,hexagonal or irregular-shaped daughter minerals in L-V-S inclusions complete dissolution at temperatures of 420 480℃and recrystallize again at about 400 320℃.These show that daughter minerals in multiphase inclusions in mineralizing veins were crystallized from trapped fluids,and are real daughter ***-carbonates,halite,sylvite,barite, calcite,and pyroxene(?) have been identified on the basis of crystal habit(microscopic and SEM) and EDX *** comparison with Raman spectra of reference REE-carbonate mineral crystals,hexagonal or irregular-shaped daughter minerals in L-V-S inclusions might be cebaite and ***. presence of REE-carbonates as an abundant solid in the ore-forming veins shows that the original ore-forming fluids were very rich in REE,and therefore had the potential to produce economic REE ores at Bayan Obo.

A detailed study of the～2.2 Ga Yanmenguan mafic-ultramafic intrusion in the Hengshan area is presented with the aim of clarifying the tectonic history of the Trans-North China Orogen in the North China Craton during the period 2.3-2.1 *** U-Pb dating of magmatic zircons from a gabbro indicates emplacement at～2193 *** whole rock and mineral geochemistry of this intrusion are akin to Alaskan-type complexes,and are typical of subduction-related *** parental magma likely originated from the depleted mantle wedge above a subduction zone,and experienced fractional crystallization of olivine and *** continental arc,represented by the mafic-ultramafic intrusions and contemporary granitic and volcanic rocks,together with the Liiliang back-arc basin constitute a marginal arc-back-arc basin system that evolved between 2.3 and 2.1 *** on geochronological datasets and available data on magmatism,metamorphism and structural deformation,a comprehensive new tectonic model for the evolution of the TNCO during the Neoarchean to Paleoproterozoic is constructed:(1)～2.5Ga intra-oceanic arc-back-arc basin system and its accretion at the end of the Neoarchean;(2)a long hiatus in magmatism and tectonism between～2.5 and 2.3 Ga;(3)～2.3-2.1 Ga marginal arc-back-arc basin magmatism developed in the accreted Hengshan-Wutai-Fuping arc terranes and the Liiliang terrane;(4)～2.1 Ga collision,resulting in closure of the～2.3-2.1 Ga Liiliang back-arc basin,accretion of the Liiliang-Hengshan-Wutai-Fuping arc terranes,and their attachment to the Western Block of the North China Craton;(5)the intrusion of～1970-1910Ma post-collisional mafic dykes in an extensional event;(6)final collision between the Western and Eastern Blocks between～1.9 and 1.8 Ga,resulting in extensive magmatism,tectonism and metamorphism;and lastly(7)post-1.8 Ga crustal extension.

Do Supercontinent-Superplume Cycles Control the Growth and Evolution of Continental Crust?

The evolution of continental crust can be directly linked to the first-order supercontinent-superplume *** demonstrate that:(1)a mantle-like oxygen isotopic signature is not a diagnostic feature for distinguishing crustal addition from the reworking of pre-existing continental crust;(2)juvenile continental crust shows a wide range of whole-rock Hf isotopic compositions throughout Earth's history;and(3)detrital zircon Hf model ages cannot reliably determine the growth of continental ***,the wide use of zircon Hf model ages,based on zircon grains with mantle-like oxygen isotopes,is inappropriate for estimating the timing of continental crustal *** on an analysis of global Hf and O isotope and zircon age databases,we argue that the actual U-Pb crystallization ages of juvenile zircon grains provide the best opportunity to unravel crustal growth through time and to test its relationship with supercontinent-superplume ***,when the Hf isotopes of these juvenile grains plot within the field of juvenile continental crust,they correlate well with times of global mantle depletion as recorded by Os and He isotopes,plume activity as recorded by LIP events,and periods of crustal growth and the breakup of *** contrast,zircon grains crystallized from magmas that were produced by partial melting of pre-existing continental crust show U-Pb age peaks that correspond mainly to times of supercontinent assembly and crustal *** analysis shows the key role played by recycling of mafic crustal components in the generation of juvenile continental crust.

Mesozoic volcanic rocks and granitoids are widespread in the Great Xing’an Range,which is part of a large igneous province in the eastern ***,the ages of the volcanic rocks,especially those in the southern segment of the range,are poorly *** we present zircon U-Pb and whole rock Ar-Ar ages of 43 volcanic rocks from the four recognized formations(Manketouebo,Manitu,Baiyingaolao and Meiletu)in the southern Great Xing’an *** volcanic rocks of the Manketouebo Formation have a large span of ages ranging from 174 to 122 Ma,while those of the Manitu Formation exhibit a smaller age range from 156 to 125 *** Baiyingaolao and Meiletu volcanic rocks both have Early Cretaceous ages between 139 and 124 *** data indicate that the mapped units are not strictly ’formations’ and further studies are required to resolve this ***,when taken together,these new data define two episodes of magmatism(Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous)with the Early Cretaceous volcanic rocks being dominant. Combined with previously published data from the northern Great Xing’an Range,and available age data from other parts of northeastern China and surrounding regions,two stages of magmatism,i.e.,Jurassic and Early Cretaceous,can be identified throughout this part of *** Jurassic rocks mainly comprise granites, while volcanic rocks are dominant in the Early *** two stages of magmatism form opposite spatial trends,that is,the Jurassic rocks become younger to the west,whereas the Cretaceous rocks become younger to the *** the two stages of magmatism,the ’magma gap’ increases eastward in duration from less than 10 Ma in the Great Xing’an Range to more than 40 Ma in *** trends can be explained by westward subduction of the Paleo-Pacific oceanic Plate and its control on subsequent geodynamic *** subduction of the oceanic slab caused crustal shortening and thickening,and formed the westward decrease in age of the gra
