Slenderness Ratio Effect on the Eccentric Compression Performance of Chamfered Laminated Bamboo Lumber Columns

Eccentric compression tests on 15 chamfered laminated bamboo lumber(LBL)columns with a height ranging from 600 to 3000 mm were conducted in order to study the eccentric mechanical *** failure of all specimens was caused by the crack of bamboo fiber in the tensile *** the ultimate strength was reached,except specimens with a height of 600 mm,all other specimens could bear large deformation,showing good *** lateral displacements of the specimens under eccentric compression were approximately para-bolic in the direction of column *** ultimate bending moment of LBL columns with different slenderness ratios under compression with the same initial eccentricity was a fixed *** relationship between ultimate capacity,axial displacement,lateral displacement,and slenderness ratio was analyzed based on test *** was found that the plane section assumption could be used to express the stress and strain distribution of chamfered LBL columns under eccentric compression.A method for calculating the ultimate bearing capacity was proposed using a constitutive model based on the Ramberg-Osgood relation and the empirical formula for calculating the ultimate capacity was given on the basis of the former research as well as the test results in this paper.

Study of the Effects of Atmospheric Pressure in the Time Series of Muon Detector Using the Method of Spectral Analysis

This paper presented a study of the effects of atmospheric pressure in the time series of muon detector using the method of spectral analysis of iterative regression. In which it observed that the periods of 4.8, 5.7, 7.0, 8.7, 10.7, 14.1, 16.2, 21.0, 31.2 and 356.7 days present in the amplitude spectrum of atmospheric pressure are also present in the amplitude spectra of muons data. Also it observed that the standardization of muons data to eliminate the effects of atmospheric pressure is efficient for periods under 7 days.

Cutaneous manifestations of hepatitis C in the era of new antiviral agents

The association of chronic hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection with a wide spectrum of cutaneous manifestations has been widely reported in the literature, with varying strength of epidemiological association. Skin diseases which are certainly related with chronic HCV infection due to a strong epidemiological and pathogenetic association are mixed cryoglobulinemia, lichen planus and porphyria cutanea tarda. Chronic pruritus and necrolytic acral erythema are conditions that may share a possible association with HCV infection, while several immune-mediated inflammatory skin conditions, such as psoriasis, chronic urticaria and vitiligo, have been only anecdotally reported in the setting of chronic HCV infection. Traditional interferonbased treatment regimens for HCV infection are associated with substantial toxicity and a high-risk of immune-related adverse events, while the advent of new direct-acting antivirals with sustained virological response and improved tolerability will open the door for all-oral, interferon-free regimens. In the new era of these direct acting antivirals there will be hopefully a renewed interest in extra-hepatic manifestations of HCV infection. The aim of the present paper is to review the main cutaneous HCV-related disorders- mixed cryoglobulinemia, lichen planus, porphyria cutanea tarda and chronic pruritus- and to discuss the potential impact of new antiviral treatments on the course of these extrahepatic manifestations of chronic HCV infection.

Gold-iridium catalysts for the hydrogenation of biomass derived products

Au-Ir and Au-Ru on TiOz catalysts prepared by sequential deposition-precipitation technique were compared with the corresponding monometallics in the hydrogenation of levulinic acid to y-valero]actone. Interestingly the addition of Ao to Ir/TiO2 showed a detrimental effect on the activity of Ir monometallic catalyst whereas a positive synergistic effect was shown in the case of Ru. Both catalysts were reduced under H2 to increase the M0-Au0 interaction, From previous DFT calculations and catalytic test, we addressed the lower activity of Au-lr/TiO2 than that of Ir/TiO2 to the interference of Au into the redox mechanism of lr atoms.

Frailty is a critical intermediate status of the aging process with a multidimensional and multisystem nature and at higher risk for adverse health-related outcomes,including falls,disability,hospitalizations,institutionalization,mortality,dementia,and Alzheimer’s *** different frailty phenotypes,oral frailty has been recently suggested as a novel construct defined as a decrease in oral function with a coexisting decline in cognitive and physical *** briefly reviewed existing evidence on operational definitions of oral frailty,assessment and screening tools,and possible relationships among oral frailty,oral microbiota,and Alzheimer’s disease *** underlying mechanism may explain the oral health-frailty links including undernutrition,sarcopenia linked to both poor nutrition and frailty,psychosocial factors,and the chronic inflammation typical of oral *** microbiota may influence Alzheimer’s disease risk through circulatory or neural access to the brain and the interplay with periodontal disease,often causing tooth loss also linked to an increased Alzheimer’s disease *** this bases,COR388,a bacterial protease inhibitor targeting Porphyromonas gingivalis implicated in periodontal disease,is now being tested in a double-blind,placebocontrolled Phase II/III study in mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s ***,oral status may be an important contributor to general health,including Alzheimer’s disease and latelife cognitive disorders,suggesting the central role of preventive strategies targeting the novel oral frailty phenotype and including maintenance and improvement of oral function and nutritional status to reduce the burden of both oral dysfunction and frailty.

Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis (SIAD) is a common paraneoplastic syndrome commonly associated with thoracic malignancies, gastrointestinal cancers and kidney tumors. It is defined as hyponatremia in euvolemic patients, often due to abnormal secretion of antidiuretic hormone by tumor cells. Tolvaptan, a vasopressin-2-receptor antagonist, is currently recommended for patients affected by SIAD with mild or moderate symptoms. Among patients with prostatic cancer, SIAD represents a rare condition but it is frequently associated with poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma or pure small-cell carcinoma histotype. We report a case of SIAD appeared at disease progression in a 60-year-old male patient with acinar adenocarcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation together with a literature review.

Lead and Cadmium Distribution in Tubes of Galvanized Steel by Hot-Dip Used for Drinking Water Supply

The main objective of this work was to evaluate the presence of lead and cadmium in galvanized steel tubes by hot-dip used exclusively for drinking water *** this research,samples of galvanized tubes were removed from walls of residential buildings with 30 years of *** the process of hot galvanizing,the manufacturing standards allow or for low cost conveniences,and the use of primary zinc ingot with 1.6%metallic impurities,such as lead and cadmium,is allowed,enabling the incorporation of these metals into the zinc coating deposited on the carbon *** associated corrosion of these tubes can release these toxic metals,contaminating the drinking water used by *** samples taken from the tubes were evaluated by a square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry technique,and the results for lead and cadmium suggested randomly distributed levels,indicating that the contents of these contaminants depend mainly on the quality of the added primary zinc and the operational conditions of the immersion *** metallographic evaluations performed on the samples of the galvanized tubes showed irregularities in thickness and even a lack of the zinc layer deposited on the carbon steel *** facts suggest that galvanized tubes should not be used for drinking water.

Most of the studies regarding the formation and stability of emulsions focus on the conditioning and management of crude oil on surface *** a great deal of the crude oil produced is in the form of stable emulsions,it is often claimed that these emulsions are formed through chokes and other flow constrictions in oil field ***,emulsions are produced in wells,which not only lack these constrictions but also are produced at low flow rates,demonstrating the fact that emulsions can be formed within the well *** present work reviews the literature regarding the formation and properties of heavy and extra-heavy oil emulsions in naturally fractured porous media due to the current relevance that these types of crude oil exploitation take,satisfying the hydrocarbon energy ***,emulsions have received more attention recently since they can be formed in-situ and improve oil *** understand the flow mechanics of emulsions in porous media,different models to describe their transportation are ***,the formation of emulsions in the reservoir for enhanced oil recovery purposes,including the use of nanoparticlestabilized emulsions is discussed.
