The mismatch between the photovoltaic(PV)cells absorption and the solar irradiance on earth is one of the major limitations towards more efficient PV energy *** aspect was addressed by downshifting the solar irradiance on Earth through luminescent down-shifting layers based on lanthanidedoped surface-functionalized ionosilicas(ISs)embedded in poly(methyl methacrylate)(PmmA)coated on the surface of commercial Si-based PV *** IS-PmmA hybrid materials exhibit efficient solar radiation harvesting(spectral overlap of^9.5×10^19 photons/(s·m2))and conversion(quantum yield^52%).The direct solar radiation and the down-shifted radiation are partially guided and lost through total internal reflection to the layer edges being unavailable for PV conversion of the coated PV *** tuning the down-shifting layer thickness,it also acts as luminescent solar concentrator enabling the collection of the guided radiation by flexible PV cells applied on the borders of the down-shifting layer leading to an enhancement of the PV energy conversion from^5%(in the case of the single-use of the luminescent down-shifting layer)to^13%comparing with the bare PV *** overall electrical output of the device resulted in an absolute external quantum efficiency increase of^32%for the optimized Eu^3+-based films in the UV spectral region(compared with the bare PV device,which is among the best values reported so far).

Secondary forests and human-made forest gaps are conspicuous features of tropical ***,behavioral responses to these aspects of anthropogenically modified forests remain poorly ***,we analyze the effects of small human-made clearings and secondary forests on tropical bats by examining the guild-and species-level activity patterns of phyllostomids sampled in the Central Amazon,***,we contrast the temporal activity patterns and degree of temporal overlap of 6 frugivorous and 4 gleaning animalivorous species in old-growth forest and second-growth forest and of 4 frugivores in old-growth forest and forest *** activity patterns of frugivores and gleaning animalivores did not change between old-growth forest and second-growth,nor did the activity patterns of frugivores between old-growth forest and ***,at the species level,we detected significant differences for Artibeus obscurus(old-growth forest ***-growth)and ***(old-growth forest ***).The degree of temporal overlap was greater than random in all sampled ***,for frugivorous species,the degree of temporal overlap was similar between old-growth forest and second-growth;whereas for gleaning animalivores,it was lower in second-growth than in old-growth *** the contrary,forest clearings were characterized by increased temporal overlap between *** in activity patterns and temporal overlap may result from differential foraging opportunities and dissimilar predation ***,our analyses suggest that activity patterns of bats in second-growth and small forest clearings,2 of the most prominent habitats in humanized tropical landscapes,varies little from the activity patterns in old-growth forest.

Preparation and characterization of phosphate-modified mesoporous TiO2 incorporated in a silica matrix and their photocatalytic properties in the photodegradation of Congo red

This study describes the development of mesostructured TiO2 photo- catalysts modified with PO4^3- to improve its specific surface area and reduce the recombination rate of the electron-hole pairs. The mesoporous photocatalyst was successfully incorporated into a high specific surface area silica matrix by the hydrolysis reaction of tetraethyl orthosilicate （TEOS）. Pluronic 123 and phosphoric acid were used as the directing agent for the structure of the mesoporous TiO2 and as a source of phosphorus, respectively, TiO2, P/TiO2, TiO2-SiO2 and P/TiO2-SiO2 materials were characterized by BET, XRD, TEm-EDS, FTIR and UV-vis DRS measurements. The photoactivity of TiO2-SiO2 nanocomposites containing 15 wt.% photocatalystJsilica was evaluated in the degradation reaction of anionic dyes with UV radiation. The proposed nanomaterials showed high potential for applications in the remediation of wastewater, being able to reuse in several cycles of reaction, maintaining its photoactivity and stability. The separation and recovery time of the material is reduced between cycles since no centrifugation or filtration processes are required after the photooxidation reaction.

Tree mortality and biomass loss in drought-aff ected forests of East Texas,USA

Changes in tree mortality due to severe drought can alter forest structure,composition,dynamics,ecosystem services,carbon fl uxes,and energy interactions between the atmosphere and land *** utilized long-term(2000‒2017,3 full inventory cycles)Forest Inventory and Analysis(FIA)data to examine tree mortality and biomass loss in drought-aff ected forests for East Texas,*** that experienced six or more years of droughts during those censuses were selected based on 12-month moderate drought severity[Standardized Precipitation Evaporation Index(SPEI)-1.0].Plots that experienced other disturbances and inconsistent records were excluded from the *** total,222 plots were retained from nearly 4000 *** nonlinear mixed models(GNmms)were used to examine the changes in tree mortality and recruitment rates for selected *** results showed that tree mortality rates and biomass loss to mortality increased overall,and across tree sizes,dominant genera,height classes,and *** average mortality rate of 5.89%year−1 during the study period could be incited by water stress created by the regional prolonged and episodic drought *** overall plot and species-group level recruitment rates decreased during the study *** mortality showed mixed results regarding basal area and forest density using all plots together and when analyzed the plots by stand origin and *** mortality rates of smaller trees were detected and were likely compounded by densitydependent *** analysis of drought-induced tree mortality using hydro-meteorological data along with drought severity and length gradient is suggested to better understand the eff ects of drought on tree mortality and biomass loss around and beyond East Texas in the southeastern United States.

Bile leakage after loop closure vs clip closure of the cystic duct during laparoscopic cholecystectomy:A retrospective analysis of a prospective cohort

BACKGROUND Laparoscopic cholecystectomy(LC)is one of the most frequently performed surgical *** stump leakage is an underestimated,potentially life threatening complication that occurs in 1%-6%of the *** a secure cystic duct occlusion technique during LC,bile leakage becomes a preventable *** To investigate the effect of polydioxanone(PDS)loop closure of the cystic duct on bile leakage rate in LC *** In this retrospective analysis of a prospective cohort,the effect of PDS loop closure of the cystic duct on bile leakage complication was compared to patients with conventional clip *** regression analysis was used to develop a risk score to identify bile leakage *** rate was assessed for categories of patients with increasing levels of bile leakage *** Of the 4359 patients who underwent LC,136(3%)underwent cystic duct closure by a PDS ***,loop closure patients had significantly more complicated biliary disease compared to the clipped closure *** the loop closure cohort,zero(0%)bile leakage occurred compared to 59 of 4223(1.4%)clip closure *** patients at increased bile leakage risk(risk score≥1)rates were 1.6%and up to 13%(4/30)for clip closure patients with a risk score≥*** risk increase paralleled a stepwise increase of actual bile leakage complication for clip closure patients,which was not observed for loop closure *** Cystic duct closure with a PDS loop during LC may reduce bile leakage in patients at increased risk for bile leakage.

Invasive species are a major threat to island biodiversity,and their eradications have substantially contributed to the conservation of island ***,the consequences of eradications on the trophic ecology of native taxa are largely ***,we used the eradication of invasive black rats Rattus rattus and European rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus from the Berlenga Island,in the western coast of Portugal,as a whole-ecosystem experiment to investigate the effects of the eradication of invasive mammals on the trophic niche and body dimensions of the island-restricted Berlenga wall lizard Podarcis carbonelli berlengensis over a 2-year *** results suggest an expansion of the isotopic niche and an intensification of the sexual dimorphism of the lizard following mammal ***,we found considerable variability in isotopic niche across the island and detected evidence of sex-specific and season-modulated nutritional requirements of this threatened *** findings support that the eradication of 2 of the planets most problematic invasive vertebrates led to changes in the lizard trophic niche and sexual dimorphism in just 2 *** suggests that the ecological pressuresfor example,prey availability and habitat structureto which lizards are exposed have substantially changed *** study emphasizes the scientific value of island eradications as experiments to address a wide range of ecological questions and adds to the increasing body of evidence supporting substantial conservation gains associated with these restoration interventions.

The role of recrystallization and grain growth in optimizing the sheet texture of magnesium alloys with calcium addition during annealing

The enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose is still considered as a main limiting step of the biological production of biofuels from ligno-cellulosic biomass. Glycoside hydrolases from Trichoderma reesei are currently used to produce fermentable glucose units from degradation of cellulose packed in a complex assembly of cellulose microfibrils. The present work describes the structural evolution of two prototypical samples of cellulose (a micro-crystalline cellulose and a bleached sulfite pulp) over 5 length scale orders of magnitude. The results were obtained through wide angle, small angle and ultra-small angles synchrotron X-ray scattering, completed by Small Angle Neutron Scattering and particle size analyzers. These structural evolutions were followed as a function of enzymatic conversion. The results show that whereas there is no change at the nanometer scale, drastic changes occur at micron. The observed decrease of the size of the cellulose particles is accompanied by a smoothing of the crystalline surfaces that can be explained by a two-step mechanism of the enzymatic hydrolysis.
