Spatio-temporal coupled mode theory for nonlocal metasurfaces

Diffractive nonlocal metasurfaces have recently opened a broad range of exciting developments in nanophotonics research and applications,leveraging spatially extended—yet locally patterned—resonant modes to control light with new degrees of *** conventional grating responses are elegantly captured by temporal coupled mode theory,current approaches are not well equipped to capture the arbitrary spatial response observed in the nascent field of nonlocal ***,we introduce spatio-temporal coupled mode theory(STCMT),capable of elegantly capturing the key features of the resonant response of wavefront-shaping nonlocal *** framework can quantitatively guide nonlocal metasurface design while maintaining compatibility with local metasurface frameworks,making it a powerful tool to rationally design and optimize a broad class of ultrathin optical *** validate this STCMT framework against full-wave simulations of various nonlocal metasurfaces,demonstrating that this tool offers a powerful semi-analytical framework to understand and model the physics and functionality of these devices,without the need for computationally intense full-wave *** also discuss how this model may shed physical insights into nonlocal phenomena in photonics and the functionality of the resulting *** a relevant example,we showcase STCMT’s flexibility by applying it to study and rapidly prototype nonlocal metasurfaces that spatially shape thermal emission.

Hydrogen has emerged as a promising alternative to meet the growing demand for sustainable and renewable energy sources. Underground hydrogen storage(UHS) in depleted gas reservoirs holds significant potential for large-scale energy storage and the seamless integration of intermittent renewable energy sources, due to its capacity to address challenges associated with the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources, ensuring a steady and reliable energy supply. Leveraging the existing infrastructure and well-characterized geological formations, depleted gas reservoirs offer an attractive option for large-scale hydrogen storage implementation. However, significant knowledge gaps regarding storage performance hinder the commercialization of UHS operation. Hydrogen deliverability, hydrogen trapping, and the equation of state are key areas with limited understanding. This literature review critically analyzes and synthesizes existing research on hydrogen storage performance during underground storage in depleted gas reservoirs; it then provides a high-level risk assessment and an overview of the techno-economics of UHS. The significance of this review lies in its consolidation of current knowledge,highlighting unresolved issues and proposing areas for future research. Addressing these gaps will advance hydrogen-based energy systems and support the transition to a sustainable energy *** efficient and safe deployment of UHS in depleted gas reservoirs will assist in unlocking hydrogen's full potential as a clean and renewable energy carrier. In addition, this review aids policymakers and the scientific community in making informed decisions regarding hydrogen storage technologies.

Charge density wave(CDW) in kagome materials with the geometric frustration is able to carry unconventional ***, a CDW has been observed below the antiferromagnetic order in kagome FeGe, in which magnetism and CDW are intertwined to form an emergent quantum ground state. However, the CDW is only short-ranged and the structural modulation originating from it has yet to be determined experimentally. Here we realize a long-range CDW order by post-annealing process,and resolve the structure model through single crystal X-ray diffraction. Occupational disorder of Ge resulting from short-range CDW correlations above T_(CDW) is identified from structure refinements. The partial dimerization of Ge along the c axis is unveiled to be the dominant distortion for the CDW. Occupational disorder of Ge is also proved to exist in the CDW phase due to the random selection of partially dimerized Ge sites. Our work provides useful insights for understanding the unconventional nature of the CDW in FeGe.

Electrostatic precipitators clean away the particulate matter of exhaust gases in manifold industrial *** studies of particle separation in the size range of several 100 nm to 25μm is of particular interest for the prediction of precipitation efficiencies and *** typically cover the transport of particles towards walls of the ***,no model yet covers the possible re-entrainment of particles from layers formed at the walls back into the gas *** study presents the implementation of a new time-resolving model for electrostatic precipitation utilizing a re-entrainment *** data support the results of *** model uses a statistical approach based on properties of the particulate layer forming at the precipitator *** model is used for the analysis of the redispersion of particles in a laboratory-scale electrostatic precipitator(sander,Gawor,&Fritsching,2018).Results show reduced precipitation efficiencies for particles larger than 5μm as particles have higher kinetic impact energies and lower bounding energy at the layer *** dynamics reveal a steady-state behavior of the separation for CaCO3(limestone,trademark"Ulmer WeissR")while Al2O3(trademark"Pural NFR")precipitation is affected by layer buildup at the walls increasing over several minutes.

Numerical simulations of electrostatic precipitators featuring wire and spiked electrode designs were performed to determine particle behavior and separation efficiency. The applied-voltage mechanism that alters the flow structure of particles through ionic winds and mean electric fields are revealed. Numeri- cal studies throughout the past years have shown these structures for channel and pipe configurations. However, less attention was given to field averaging for the ni,~r-product and electric field. Our study focuses on this averaging and illustrates relevant differences between multidimensional setups concern- ~ng these fields. Turbulence was modeled using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with a second-order Reynolds-stress-model closure. A high three-dimensionality of the ionic wind-induced turbulence is presented. This leads to an increase in the submicron-particle precipitation rate. The results confirm the dependence of separation efficiency on particle density and permittivity, thereby showing the advantages of spiked wires compared with wire-plate setups used in electrostatic precipitators.

This paper presents the design and manufacture process of a wheel-less,modular snake robot with series elastic actuators to reliably measure motor torque signal and investigate the effectiveness of active stiffness control for achieving adaptive snake-like locomotion.A polyurethane based elastic element to be attached between the motor and the links at each joint was designed and manufactured using water jet cutter,which makes the final design easier to develop and more cost-effective,compared to existing snake robots with torque measurement *** reliability of such torque measurement mechanism was examined using simulated dynamical model of pedal wave motion,which proves the efficacy of the design.A distributed control system was also designed,which with the help of an admittance controller,enables active control of the joint stiffness to achieve adaptive snake robot pedal wave locomotion to climb over obstacles,which unlike existing methods does not require prior information about the location of the *** effectiveness of the proposed controller in comparison to open-loop control strategy was verified by the number of *** results show the capability of the robot to successfully climb over obstacles with the height of more than 55%of the diameter of the snake robot modules.
