The littoral paranthurid isopod crustacean Paranthura nigropunctata （Lucas, 1846） is recorded for the first time from the littoral of El Jadida located on the Atlantic northwest coast of Morocco. Specimens were obtained from the invasive brown seaweed Sargassum muticum and the natives Bifurcaria bifurcata and Cystoseira tamariscifolia in January 2015. This new record further confirms a significant southward distribution of P. nigropunctata and contributes to the knowledge of the biogeography of this isopod. Heretofore, the species was only known from the western and eastern Mediterranean and some Atlantic coasts. The present finding is the first of the species from Moroccan Atlantic shores, and suggests that the species may also be present in other coastal localities from Morocco and Africa. Some data on morphology, ecology and spatial distribution of the species are provided.

The Combination Effect of Daphne Extract and Imatinib on the Antiproliferative Activity of the K562 Cell Line

Background: Herbal medicine is well-known among the ancient medical sciences. Healing properties have been observed in some species of Daphne plant. The effect of Daphne plant extract on the K562 cell line has been previously studied, and Gleevec is a well-known and effective medicine for the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia. Material and Methods: In this study, the simultaneous effects of using herbal medicine and a target therapy medicine on the K562 cell line were investigated. The presence of some species of Daphne in Iran motivated us to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of Daphne mucronata on human leukemia cancer cells. The antiproliferative activity of the dichloromethane extract of Daphne mucronate (Thymelaeaceae), a new anticancer medicinal plant, was evaluated. Cell viability was quantitated by MTT assay. Apoptotic and necrotic changes in the cell membrane were examined using flow cytometry. Changes in Bax and Bcl2 gene expression were investigated using real-time PCR. The MIC and the IC50 of the crude extract were calculated, and the MIC and IC50 of the Daphne extract in combination of imatinib were tested in the K-562 cell line. Results: K-562 cells responded to the extract treatments in a dose-dependent manner, and the increase in the expression of Bcl2 and decrease in the expression of the Bax gene intensified with increasing extract concentration. Flow cytometry revealed that most of the cells underwent necrosis. Conclusion: Daphne extract effectively decreased the viability of the K562 cell line. The necrotic effect of the Daphne extract was evaluated, and an increase in the gene expression of Bcl2 was observed in cells exposed to the Daphne extract. The combination of Daphne extracts with imatinib enhances the cytotoxic effect of imatinib.

Cobalt is used in the manufacture of alloys, catalysts in the petroleum industry, catalytic converters, and paint pigments. Thus the potential for Co releases into the environment is highly increased. Use of waste sludges and sewage effluent to fertilize and irrigate soils has also increased soil Co concentrations. Total cobalt contents of alluvial delta soil of Egypt show considerable variation ranging from 13.1 to 64.7 ppm. The impact of either wastewater irrigation or industrial activities on soil total Co was obvious due to accumulation of organic matter and solid waste in the surface soil samples. Food crops and vegetables should not be grown on soil highly contaminated by Co. It is noteworthy that the delayed neutron activation analysis(DNAA) technique could be used successfully for total Co determination due to its high sensitivity. It is quit clearly that dust samples of Cairo City contains higher Co level, as compared to Suez Canal Region(Ismailia, Port Said and El-Suez cities). The high values in Cairo City may be due to the existence of industries around the city and the intensive traffic. To minimize Co environmental hazards, waste effluents should be treated on site. Thus, levels of potentially toxic Co needs to be continuously monitored and should be removed during several treatment processes before the disposal of these wastes.

Nanostructured Y203 was successfully prepared via a two-step and template-free method. Firstly, yttrium hydroxide precursor was galvanostatically grown on the steel substrate from chloride bath by direct and pulse current deposition modes. Direct cunent deposition was carried out at the constant current density of 0.1 A/dm2 for 600 s. The pulse current was also performed at a typical on-time and off-time （ton=l S and Germ s） with an average current density of 0.05 A/dm2 （la=0.05 A/din2） for 600 s. The obtained hydroxide films were then scraped from the substrates and thermally converted into final oxide product via heat-treatment. Thermal behaviors and phase transformations during the heat treatment of the hydroxide powder samples were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry （DSC） and thermogravimetric analysis （TGA）. The final oxide products were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction （XRD）, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR） and scanning electron microscopy （SEM）. The results showed that the well-crystallized Y203 with brainand sphere-like morphology were achievable via pulse and direct deposition modes, respectively. It was concluded that pulse current cathodic electrodeposition offered a facile route for preparation ofnanostructured Y203.

Magnesium and its alloys have been used in many industries, but they are reactive and require protection against aggressive environments. In this study, oxide coatings were applied on AZ91D magnesium alloy using micro-arc oxidation （MAO） process. Then, in order to seal the pores of the MAO coatings, the samples were immersed in cerium bath for different times. The surface morphologies and compositions of the coatings were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy （EDS）, respectively. The corrosion behavior of the coatings was investigated with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy （EIS） and potentiodynamic polarization tests in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The amount of the porosity of the coating was measured by electrochemical method. It was found that the sealing treatments by immersion in cerium bath successfully sealed the pores of the MAO coatings. The results of the corrosion tests showed that the MAO coating which was sealed in Ce bath for 10 min enhanced the corrosion resistance of the substrate significantly. Furthermore, this coating had the lowest amount of the porosity among the coatings.

The distribution of nano-carbonitrides produced by the treatments of surface nanocrystallization and plasma electrolytic carbonitriding on a γ-TiAl was investigated by means of figure analysis. The skewness and kurtosis of Gaussian shape distribution curves were studied and the effect of electrolyte temperature was determined. The usage of lower temperatures of the electrolyte is more suitable for achieving lower sizes of complex nano-carbonitrides. The surface roughness of treated samples was measured and it was observed that there is an optimum level of electrolyte temperature for surface roughness increase （difference between two measured data）.
