Predictors of response to antiviral therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis C from Pakistani population

Background Hepatitis C virus （HCV） constitutes a major public health issue around the world, especially in developing countries like Pakistan. In this study, we assessed outcome of interferon （INF） treatment in chronic hepatitis C patients categorized by gender, age, and viral *** In this study, 750 HCV positive patients with genotype 3 were selected, out of which 616 completed the entire treatment. Their personal history, pro-treatment HCV RNA and serum alanine transaminase （ALT） was *** were treated with combination therapy of INF-α 2b three million units （thrice a week） plus ribavirin （1000-1200mg per day） for 24 weeks. After 24 weeks their HCV RNA and serum ALT level was *** Out of the 616 patients, 391 （63.5%） responded to therapeutic regimen （INF-α 2b plus ribavirin）. Among the responders, 27.1% were men and 36.4% were women. Best treatment response was observed in patients having Iow viral load ＜8×105 IU/ml and age ≤40 years than patients having Iow viral load and age ＞40 years （73.2% vs. 60.3%, P=0.05）.Conclusions Better response to IFN-α 2b plus ribavirin was observed in patients with lower viral RNA and younger *** suggests that all patients considered for treatment should have quantification of serum HCV RNA level. The result can be used to counsel patients on the likelihood of response and may influence the patient＇s decision on treatment.

Anti Inflammatory Effects of statins in Cardiac surgery Patients

Objectives: Cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass provokes systemic inflammatory response, which may cause organ dysfunction. studies have suggested that pre-operative statin therapy can reduce morbidity and mortality associated with cardiac surgery;the mechanism for this remains unclear. We hypothesise that underlying mechanism of action for these effects of statins is through inhibition of neutrophil transendothelial migration. Methods: We recruited 151 patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Of these 41 patients were on no-statin;48 patients on low-dose (10 - 30 mg) and 62 patients were on high-dose statin (40 - 80 mg). Ex vivo neutrophil migration was performed on pre-operative blood samples of 90 patients. Of these 90 patients we used 36 patients to assess the levels of TNF-α and sICAM-1. Clinical parameters of total 151 patients were assessed to analyse outcome. Results: Ex vivo neutrophil migration was decreased in high-dose statin group when compared to neutrophils isolated from no-statin or low-dose statin groups (p serum TNF-α levels were lower in the high-dose statin group (p = 0.002) and sICAM-1 levels were decreased in both low (p = 0.02) and high-dose statin (p = 0.01) groups. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that high-dose statins reduce ex-vivo transendothelial neutrophil migration, TNF-α and sICAM-1 serum levels suggesting that statins may help in decreasing the post-cardiac surgery morbidity.

Comparative study of Different Materials with Al-sic for Engine Valve Guide by Using FEM

In this work, an effort has been designed to raise the reliability of engine using Al-sic composites with other alternatively materials for the engine valve guides. Aluminum matrix composites have found the most suitable inside automotive, aerospace and aircraft industries and contain the greatest promise for future year’s growth. The finite element analysis of the Al-sic composite with Titanium alloy (Ti-834), Copper Nickel silicon alloys (CuNi3si), and aluminum bronze alloy as an alternative material for engine valve guide was done using Ansys 13.0 software. The stress analysis of engine valve guide under the different pressure and temperature is considered, the pressure is taken as from 10 MPa to 100 MPa with different temperatures varying from 600℃ to 650℃. The temperature, principal stress and principal strain distribution on the entire surface area of the engine valve guide were obtained. The stresses were observed to be well below the permitted stress for all the materials but the Al-sic composites found the most suitable one. Valve guide is modeled in pro-engineer software and analysis is carried out in Ansys 13.0. The deformations and stresses induced due to structural and thermal loading is illustrated and discussed.

Estimation of solar Energy Potential from Rooftop of Punjab Government servants Cooperative Housing society Lahore Using GIs

Pakistan has a severe electricity load shading problem. Government is trying to find out all ways for electricity generation. Alternative energy board is working to find out the energy potential using all alternative resources. Board has an objective to produce 9700 MW by 2030 to overcome load shading problem. A research was designed to find out the solar energy potential as an alternative source of energy from rooftops of residential areas in district Lahore. Punjab Governments servants housing society Lahore is selected. The society has minimum slope, aspect and shadows effects on the roofs. Also houses in PGsHs have same house structures and good town plan. A few portions of roofs are digitized to measure the available rooftop area for Photovoltaic panel’s installation. GIs models are used to find out solar energy potential monthly as well as yearly for the year of 2014. The potential estimated is 39,613,072 kWh/year. The monthly total energy consumption of the society is 347,140 kWh which is only 11% of energy production from PV solar panels. As the estimated energy is 9 times than the energy demand of the society, extra energy can be used in local/national electricity transmission grid. solar PV energy would be supplement to compensate energy shortfall in local area.

Temperature Based spatiotemporal Growth Monitoring of Rice Plant from Germination-Ripening stage Using Remote sensing and GIs Techniques

Rice (Oryza sativa) is the second staple food largely grown and widely consumed in Pakistan. About 10% of the total crop area of Pakistan is cultivated by rice that takes a part in value addition of almost 1.3% - 1.6% in the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Due to global warming, temperature has a profound impact on rice crop phenology. Low temperature is the main factor of delay in rice plant growth and very high temperature results in stressed and short heighted plant so the crop sown in a region at the same time is not ready to harvest at same hours but a delay is observed. The study area under investigation was district sheikhupura, Nankana, Lahore, Gujranawala and Hafizabad, which are famous for rice productivity. Landsat 7, 8 freely available thermal dataset are used to calculated pixel based temperature values to evaluate growth using agricultural growth indicators. The total covered area was 13,480 km2 in which 484 km2 area was marked as less growth rate area with low temperature values due to water body and excess of vegetation over there. About 7960 km2 area is marked as good for growth experiencing optimum temperature for rice plant. Approximately 4944 km2 area is marked as stressed rice plant area experiencing high temperature values adjacent to urban population. An attempt is made here to map this effect of temperature-based growth variability of the rice plant across the study area.

The genetic diversity of honeybee populations(240 individual) Apis mellifera from ten various locations of China and Pakistan was investigated by using COI(Cytochrome Oxidase subunit I) *** screening of sequences,BioEdit was used for the alignment,and these aligned sequences were employed to MEGA-7 software,to find out the phylogenetic relationship with all available subspecies through Neighbor-Joining *** the other hand,genetic divergence was calculated via Kimura-2-Parameter using MEGA7,whereas genetic diversity was calculated by DnasP *** tree results divided all populations into seven subspecies within two groups and maximum genetic divergence was observed overall at 3.88%,followed by Pakistan at 2.65% while minimum divergence value(2.02%) was observed for ***,significant genetic diversity overall was observed with 23 mutations,confirmed with the probability value of Fu’s Fu at ***-wise observations revealed that Pakistan had much highly significant variability through Fu’s Fu and D tests,along with 17 mutations whereas China had shown less diversity with ten ***,the calculation of nucleotide mismatch distribution had also confirmed genetic variability among all our sequenced ***,our findings have revealed the strong genetic interaction and a significant genetic variation among all seven subspecies of *** from two different *** results could be more helpful to investigate the genetic relationship among other subspecies of *** from different ecological zones.

Comparative study on Quantitative and Qualitative Characters of Different Oat (<i>Avena sativa</i>L.) Genotypes under Agro-Climatic Conditions of sargodha, Pakistan

An experiment was conducted to compare the forage yield and qualify of oat (Avena sativa L.) genotypes (F-413, sGD-46, F-408, F-301, sGD-2011, sGD-3, sGD-37, sGD-40, sGD-5 and s-2000) at Fodder Research Institute, sargodha, Pakistan during the year 2011 to 2012. Experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) having three replications and a net plot of size 1.6 × 5 m. The varieties were differed significantly (P ≤ 0.05) in yield, growth and quality parameters. The variety sGD-40 produced significantly higher green forage yield (80.00 t·ha-1) and dry matter yield (10.95 t·ha-1) than other varieties due to taller plants (145.73 cm), more number of tillers (7.78 m-2) and leaf area per plant (95.08 cm2). It also had the highest crude protein percentage (13.84%). Correlation analysis of quantitative and qualitative characters indicated the strongly positive association of green forage yield with dry matter, crude protein and ash content. While green forage yield was negatively correlated with the number of tillers per plant, keeping in view both forage yield and crude protein contents the genotype sGD-40 grown under the condition of sargodha (Pakistan).

Floristic Composition of the Plants of the Cholistan Desert, Pakistan

A floristic survey of Cholistan desert was carried out during 2009-2011 and total of 38 families, 106 genera and 154 species were documented from the area. Among families, 33 families belong to Dicotyledons of 79 genera and 115 species, while the 38 species of 26 genera belong to 4 families of Monocotyledons and 1 family of gymnosperms with 1 genus and 1 species. The largest family was Poaceae with 34 species followed by Papilionaceae and Zygophyllaceae with 10 species while Asteraceae with 9 species respectively. The life form of plant species was determined by following the Raunkier’s method. Therophytes comprised of 74 species (48%), Chamaephyte 40 species (26%), Hemicryptophyte 18 species (12%), Phanerophyte 19 species (12%) and Cryptophyte 3 species (2%) of the flroa of the area. It will be helpful and serve for the conservation and sustainable utilization of plant resources of the study area.
