Assessment of ecosystem services of rice farms in eastern India

Background:Rice is a major cereal crop and staple food of eastern India,and most farmers depend solely on rice for their *** farming provides both tangible and non-tangible benefits to ecosystems which need to be maintained and *** benefits are provided through ecosystem services(Es)that include both marketable and ***:In this study,the rice farms in eastern India were valued by quantifying the economic value of the services under conventional method of rice cultivation and the gap of ecosystem services value and farm income per unit area were assessed.A stratified random sampling technique was used in this study for selection of agro-climatic zones,districts,blocks,gram panchayat,and study units(households).soil sampling was also performed for assessing the regulating services(biocontrol of pests,carbon flow,soil erosion,nitrogen fixation),provisioning services(food and by-products),and supporting services(soil fertility,hydrological flow,nutrient cycling,and soil formation).Results:The results indicated that the total economic value of ecosystem services ranged from Us$1238 to 1688 ha−1 year−*** marketed(primary production)and non-marketed ecosystem services values ranged from 66–89 to 11–34%of the total,*** of some of the ecosystem services such as cultural services,biodiversity,and gas regulation,which may play a significant role in total ecosystem services,has not been made due to non-availability of data and appropriate methodology for rice *** values of parameters can explain the variability in ecosystem services among the agro-climatic zones in eastern *** of locations based on variability of ecosystem services helps in identifying intervention points for sustaining and improving ecosystem services,while permitting sustainable agro-ecological *** highest total economic gap between Es value and farm income was found in the north central plateau zone(Us$

Change in rainfall erosivity in the past and future due to climate change in the central part of India

Temporal change in rainfall erosivity varies due to the rainfall characteristic(amount,intensity,frequency,duration),which affects the conservation of soil and *** study illustrates the variation of rainfall erosivity due to changing rainfall in the past and the *** projected rainfall is generated by sDsM(statistical Downscaling Model)after calibration and validation using two GCMs(general circulation model)data of HadCM3(A2 and B2 scenario)and CGCM3(A1B and A2 scenario).The selected study area is mainly a cultivable area with an agricultural based *** economy depends on rainfall and is located in a part of the Narmada river basin in central *** rainfall locations are selected that are distributed throughout the study area and *** results indicate gradually increasing projected rainfall while the past rainfall has shown a declined pattern by Mann–kendall test with statistical 95%confidence *** erosivity has increased due to the projected increase in the future rainfall(2080 s)in comparison to the *** erosivity varies from32.91%to 24.12%in the 2020s,18.82 to 75.48%in 2050 s and 20.95–202.40%in *** outputs of this paper can be helpful for the decision makers to manage the soil water conservation in this study area.

Oxidative stress and redox signaling in CRPC progression: therapeutic potential of clinically-tested Nrf2-activators

Androgen deprivation therapy(ADT)is the mainstay regimen in patients with androgen-dependent prostate cancer(PCa).However,the selection of androgen-independent cancer cells leads to castrate resistant prostate cancer(CRPC).The aggressive phenotype of CRPC cells underscores the need to elucidate mechanisms and therapeutic strategies to suppress CRPC *** ADT,the activation of androgen receptor(AR)transcription factor continues via crosstalk with parallel signaling *** of how these signaling cascades are initiated and amplified post-ADT is *** deprivation can increase oxidative stress and the resultant reactive oxygen species(ROs)may activate both AR and non-AR ***,ROs-induced inflammatory cytokines may further amplify these redox signaling pathways to augment AR ***,clinical trials using ROs quenching small molecule antioxidants have not suppressed CRPC progression,suggesting that more potent and persistent suppression of redox signaling in CRPC cells will be *** transcription factor Nrf2 increases the expression of numerous antioxidant enzymes and downregulates the function of inflammatory transcription factors,e.g.,nuclear factor kappa *** documented that Nrf2 overexpression can suppress AR-mediated transcription in CRPC cell ***,two Nrf2 activating agents,sulforaphane(a phytochemical)and bardoxolone-methyl(a drug in clinical trial)suppress AR levels and sensitize CRPC cells to *** observations implicate the benefits of potent Nrf2-activators to suppress the lethal signaling cascades that lead to CRPC *** review article will address the redox signaling networks that augment AR signaling during PCa progression to CRPC,and the possible utility of Nrf2-activating agents as an adjunct to ADT.

studies on Processing and Characterization of Hydroxyapatite Biomaterials from Different Bio Wastes

Development of suitable materials that acts as an interface between the implant and tissues in body system structurally, mechanically and bio functionally is important for the success of tissue engineering. This motivated materials scientists and biologists to find out suitable bioactive materials for the aforementioned purpose. There has been growing interest in developing bioactive synthetic ceramics that could closely mimic natural apatite characteristics. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) has been widely used as a biocompatible ceramic but mainly for contact with bone tissue, due to its resemblance to mineral bone. This study presents the synthesis and characterization of HAp materials from different sources like bovine bone and fish scales and their application in tissue engineering. The phase purity and crystallinity of different calcined HAp powder was determined by XRD and FTIR analysis. The Thermo Gravimetric and Differential Thermal Analysis were carried out to show the thermal stability of the HAp powder. The morphology of the powder was observed under scanning Electron Microscopy (sEM). Cytotoxicity evaluation of the developed powder was carried out in RAW macrophage like cell line media for an incubation period of 72 hours. These results proved the biocompatibility of HAp powders obtained from different biosources for tissue engineering applications.

IGMAP： An Interactive Mapping and Clustering Platform for Plants

Next-generation sequencing （NGs） technologies have resulted in a massive surge of high-throughput genomic data, particu- larly for the plant kingdom, boosting the development of methods for gene family discovery and identification of clus- tering patterns at genomic scales. Plants are well known for the occurrence of both genic and chromosoma~ duplications that have resulted in the widespread existence of gene families in this kingdom, apart from being associated with subsequent evolutionary divergence via sub-functionalization or neo- functionalization （Flagel and Wendel, 2009）. These divergent mechanisms eventually lead to the formation of gene clusters, which in turn, have been shown to confer selective advantages to the genome including co-inheritance and co- regulation （Fischbach et ai., 2008）. Although gene clusters have been conventionally understood to be the genetic building blocks of prokaryotic genomes, comparative genomic studies have revealed the presence of functionally related genes that are clustered in lower nematodes, fungi, and several higher eukaryotes （Zorio et al., 1994; Blumenthal, 1998; Lee and sonnhammer, 2003; Hurst et al., 2004; Thomas, 2006）. However, very few data are available on the modularity or clustered linkage of genes in plants, despite the widespread occurrence of duplication events in the kingdom. In this regard, recent reports of biosynthetic modules and clustered organization of genes spotted in several major classes of plant-derived secondary metabolites arising through neo-functionalization and relocation of duplicated or existing genes, have offered an exciting niche （Osbourn, 2010）. The presently available approaches for the identification and analysis of plant gene clusters include map-based cloning, for- ward and reverse genetics, and genome mining. Transformation and risk assessment of the East kolkata Wetlands (India)using fuzzy MCDM method and geospatial technology

The East kolkata Wetlands (EkW) is located on the eastern periphery of the city of kolkata and extends up to theBidyadhari-Matla River confluence. It is a Ramsar site and acts as an absorber basin for a large number of con-taminants drained from kolkata. Agricultural lands, sewage-fed fisheries, garbage dumping fields, horticulture,and built-up areas are included in this protected area, that covers approximately 125 km2. It reveals that climatechange reduces the variety of wetland ecosystem services and increases socio-economic vulnerability and eco-nomic stress. The human encroachment, reclamation of land for agriculture, aquaculture, and urban expansion inand around kolkata has recently adversely threatened the EkW. The remotely sensed data, socio-economic data,and responses of inhabitants have been used to analyse the EkW’s risk and vulnerability. We employed geospatialanalysis by using the Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method using nine risk factors. An in-depth analysisof the EkW using geospatial techniques and the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) helped to understandthe EkW transformations through vulnerability and risk analysis. The results show that the transformation of thewetland to aquaculture, eutrophication and pollution, road proximity, waste dumping, population density, andgrowth are the main factors for the deteriorating health, quality, and environment of the EkW. It also reveals thatquantitative and qualitative evaluations of ecosystem services, wetland degradation, transformation, and cause-effect rapport should be periodically assessed using scientific methods like FAHP, Rs, GIs to formulate resilient,integrated plans and strategy for the sustainable management of the EkW.

Cardiac papillary fibroelastoma:The need for a timely diagnosis

Cardiac papillary fibroelastomas(CPFs) are the second most common primary cardiac tumors and the most common cardiac valvular tumors. Although they are histologically benign and usually asymptomatic, CPFs can lead to serious and life-threatening complications like myocardial infarction, stroke, pulmonary embolus, cardiac arrest etc. CPFs represent a rare entity in clinical medicine and literature regarding their management is limited. We report two cases which illustrate such complications arising from undiagnosed CPFs on the aortic valve. We further stress on the importance of identifying CPFs early so that they can be managed appropriately based on recommendations from the available literature.

On th e basis o f slope m ass rating （sMR） investigation, th e area falls instable class, an d landslide susceptibility score （Lss） values also indicate th a t th e slopes u n d e r investigationfall in low to m o d erate v ulnerability to landslide. MMP-2 Inhibitory Activity of PBs Extract of Guava Leaves

PBs (Phosphate Buffed saline), pH 7.4 extract of Guava leaves (Psidium guajava L.) inhibits the active MMP-2 like molecule both of plant origin as well as active MMP-2 of human (breast cancer patients’ saliva) origin. The zymogram and ELIsA were developed of different samples following standard methods. The isolation and identification of the new MMP-2 inhibitor(s) for its molecular characterization is under investigation.
