Evaluation of red soil-bentonite mixtures for compacted clay liners

Compacted clay liners are an integral part of the waste landfills,which are provided to contain the leachate within the landfills and protect the surrounding environment.Generally,locally available natural soils are used for the construction of compacted clay liners if they satisfy the design criteria.However,not all soils in their natural state satisfy all the design criteria for the liner materials.thus,there is a definite need to modify the locally available natural soils by blending with bentonite to meet the required design criteria for the liners.In view of this,the present study evaluates the suitability of an Indian red soil enhanced with bentonite as a liner material.to achieve this,a series of experiments were carried out using locally available red soil and bentonite.First,the suitability of the red soil was evaluated as a liner material.the experimental results showed that the red soil met all the selection criteria stipulated by the Environmental Protection Agencies(EPAs)for the liners except the hydraulic conductivity criterion.therefore,the red soil was mixed with bentonite contents of 10%,20%and 30%,and the red soil-bentonite mixtures were evaluated for their suitability for liners in their compacted state.Further,as the liners in the arid and semi-arid regions are subjected to moisture variations due to seasonal moisture fluctuations and other factors,the red soil-bentonite mixtures were subjected to wetdry cycles,and their suitability was evaluated after wet-dry cycles.the experimental results revealed that all the red soil-bentonite mixtures met the stipulated EPA criteria for the liners in the as-compacted state.However,the red soil-bentonite mixtures with 20%and 30%bentonite contents only satisfied the hydraulic conductivity requirement even after wet-dry cycles.the experimental findings were supplemented with the microstructural insights captured through digital camera images,scanning electron microscopy(sEM),and mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP)studies.

the influence of the tensor interaction of nucleons on the characteristics of neutron-rich silicon and nickel isotopes was studied in this work.tensor forces are considered within the framework of the Hartree-Fock approach with the skyrme interaction.the addition of a tensor component of interaction is shown to improve the description of the splittings between different single-particle states and decrease nucleon-nucleon pairing correlations in silicon and nickel nuclei.special attention was directed toward the role of isovector tensor forces relevant to the interaction of like nucleons.

Dementia is a devastating syndrome characterized by memory problems,confusion,and behavior changes that prevent people from performing everyday activities.It is the leading cause of dependency and disability amongst older people,resulting in a global economic cost of ~$1.3 trillion.Around 58 million people are currently afflicted by dementia worldwide,with Alzheimer s disease(AD) causing most(60-70%) of these cases.

QCD sum rule study of J^(P)=1^(±)exotic states with two heavy quarks in the molecular picture

In this study,the spectroscopic parameters of exotic molecular states composed of mesons containing two heavy quarks(scalar-axial and pseudoscalar-axial meson combinations)are investigated within the QCD sum rules.Our findings reveal that molecular states containing charm quarks do not form bound states,whereas states with b-quarks can form exotic molecular states.this observation has significant implications for understanding the structure of these exotic states.

superplasticity of fine-grained Mg-10Li alloy prepared by severe plastic deformation and understanding its deformation mechanisms

the superplastic behavior and associated deformation mechanisms of a fine-grained Mg-10.1 Li-0.8Al-0.6Zn alloy(LAZ1011)with a grain size of 3.2μm,primarily composed of the BCCβphase and a small amount of the HCPαphase,were examined in a temperature range of 473 K to 623 K.the microstructural refinement of this alloy was achieved by employing high-ratio differential speed rolling.the best superplasticity was achieved at 523 K and at strain rates of 10^(-4)-5×10^(-4)s^(-1),where tensile elongations of 550±600%were obtained.During the heating and holding stage of the tensile samples prior to tensile loading,a significant increase in grain size was observed at temperatures above 573 K.therefore,it was important to consider this effect when analyzing and understanding the superplastic deformation behavior and mechanisms.In the investigated strain rate range,the superplastic flow at low strain rates was governed by lattice diffusion-controlled grain boundary sliding,while at high strain rates,lattice diffusion-controlled dislocation climb creep was the rate-controlling deformation mechanism.It was concluded that solute drag creep is unlikely to occur.During the late stages of deformation at 523 K,it was observed that grain boundary sliding led to the agglomeration of theαphase,resulting in significant strain hardening.Deformation mechanism maps were constructed forβ-Mg-Li alloys in the form of 2D and 3D formats as a function of strain rate,stress,temperature,and grain size,using the constitutive equations for various deformation mechanisms derived based on the data of the current tests.

Mathematical modelling of ball and plate system with experimental and correlation function-based model validation

the ball and plate system is an inherently nonlinear under actuated benchmark system used for validating the performance of various control schemes. A mathematical model depicting the dynamics close to that of the system is very much required for such a test bed. In this correspondence, the complete nonlinear model, a simplified nonlinear model, and a linearized model of the ball and plate system are developed. the system comprises a ball and plate mechanism and a rotary servo unit. the ball and plate mechanism is modelled using the Euler–Lagrange method, whereas the rotary servo subsystem is modelled from the first principles. the nonlinear model of the combined system is developed by including the dynamics of the servo motor with gear and rolling resistance between the ball and the plate. the simplified nonlinear model of the system is obtained with suitable assumptions. the model is linearized around the operating point using the Jacobian. the validity of the developed models is investigated through correlation function analysis. the open-loop response of the three models, viz., nonlinear, simplified nonlinear, and linearized models, is analyzed in the MAtLAB/simulink platform. since the open-loop system is unstable, the experimental validation of the model is performed with a double-loop PsO (particle swarm optimization) PID control scheme.

the experiments with solar, atmospheric, reactor and accelerator neutrinos have provided compelling evidences for oscillations of neutrinos caused by nonzero neutrino masses and neutrino mixing. the data imply the existence of 3-neutrino mixing in vacuum. We review the theory of neutrino oscillations, the phenomenology of neutrino mixing, the problem of the nature - Dirac or Majorana, of massive neutrinos, the issue of CP violation in the lepton sector, and the current data on the neutrino masses and mixing parameters. the open questions and the main goals of future research in the field of neutrino mixing and oscillations are outlined.

the EsA and CAs sMILE mission orbit is highly elliptical and will pass through multiple radiation environments.the soft X-ray Imager(sXI)instrument aboard has a radiation shutter door designed to close when the surrounding radiation flux is high.the shutter door will close when passing below an altitude threshold to protect against trapped particles in the Earth’s Van Allen Belts.therefore,two radiation environments can be approximated based on the shutter door position:open and closed.the instrument background for the CCDs(Charge-Coupled Devices)that form the focal plane array of the sXI were evaluated for the two environments.Due to the correlation of the space environment with the solar cycle,the solar minima and maxima,the background was also evaluated at these two extremes.the results demonstrated that the highest instrument background will occur during solar minima due to the main contributing source being Galactic Cosmic Rays(GCRs).It was also found that the open background was highest for solar minima and that the closed background was highest during solar maxima.this is due to the radiation shutter door acting as a scattering centre and the changes in the energy flux distribution of the GCRs between the two solar extremes.

search for production of dark fermion candidates in association with heavy neutral gauge boson decaying to dimuon in proton-proton collisions at√s=8 teV using CMs open data

In this study,we conducted a search for dark matter using a part of the data recorded by the CMs experiment during run-I of the LHC in 2012 with a center of mass energy of 8 teV and an integrated luminosity of 11.6 fb−1.these data were gathered from the CMs open data.Dark matter,in the framework of the simplified model(mono-Z′),can be produced from proton-proton collisions in association with a new hypothetical gauge boson,Z′.thus,the search was conducted in the dimuon plus large missing transverse momentum channel.One benchmark scenario of mono-Z′,which is known as light vector,was used for interpreting the CMs open data.No evidence of dark matter was observed,and exclusion limits were set on the masses of dark matter and Z′at 95%confidence level.
