Developing herbicide resistant sri-lankan rice(Oryza sativa L.)varieties:An application of self Organizing Map

Application of high concentrations of post-emergent broad spectrum systemic herbicide,glyphosate is prevalently used to control rice weeds in Asian countries including sri Lanka.Off target movements of glyphosate adversely affect growth of the rice plant reducing the yield.Inducing herbicide resistance(Hr)in cultivated rice is a novel approach to enhance selectivity and crop safety.studies on induced Hr in sri Lankan rice varieties are limited and studies are required to include Hr rice in a cropping program.Ethyl Methyl sulfonate(EMs),a chemical mutagen is used for functional mutations.The present study is an attempt of raising Hr rice lines through conventional breeding methods.A suitable glyphosate concentration was determined by a preliminary study using five rice varieties(Bg300,Bg352,At362,Bg379-2 and H4)and varying glyphosate concentrations(0.25 g/l,0.5 g/l,1 g/l,2 g/l and 3 g/l).resistance percentage50%was arbitrary considered as resistant varieties.Complete randomized Design with three replicates was used in the experiment.Agromorphological characters were recorded for the survived plants.Twelve varieties(Bg359,At362,Bw364,Ld365,Bg366,Bg369,Bg379-2,Bg403,Bg454“Pachcha perumal”,“Kalu heenati”and“Kurulu thuda”)showed natural resistance to glyphosate and fourteen varieties have increased resistance after mutagenesis by EMs(s0-First generation).Hr resistance percentage of s1(second generation)plants was similar to s0 plants indicating Hr was transferred to new generation.Conventional statistics was supplemented with self-Organizing Maps(sOM)to visualize variation of agro-morphological characters under treatment.The result proved that EMs application is an effective method in breeding new rice germplasm with Hr and sOM is an important tool for visualizing the multi-dimensional dataset in lower dimensions.

Development of a Cell-based Model to Derive Direct runoff Hydrographs for Ungauged Mountainous Basins

A model to derive direct runoff hydrograph for an ungauged basin using the physical properties of the basin is presented. The basin is divided into grid cells and canal elements. Overland flow is generated from each grid cell of the basin by application of continuous effective rainfall of 1 mm/hr to the basin. The flow generated is routed through downstream grid cells and the canal elements using the kinematic wave approach. The travel time for direct runoff from each grid cell to the basin outlet is calculated and the s-curve is derived for the basin. The s-curve is used to derive the unit hydrograph of a given duration for the basin. The model, referred as Cell-basin model was applied to the Upper Kotmale Basin in sri Lanka and the model predictions of direct runoff hydrographs for rainfall events agreed with the observations to a reasonable accuracy. Comparison of the unit hydrographs obtained from the model and from the conventional snyder’s synthetic unit hydrograph using regionalized parameters assuming the basin as an ungauged basin, with the unit hydrograph derived from the observations showed that the model predicted unit hydrograph was more suitable than that obtained by snyder’s method for sri Lankan up country basins. Thus, the present model is a useful tool to obtain direct runoff hydrograph for ungauged basins.

Assessment of seasonal sedimentation in rain-fed Irrigation reservoirs by a Hillslope Erosion Modeling Approach

A distributed hillslope model is presented for the computation of seasonal sediment loads flowing into the rain-fed irrigation reservoirs (tanks) from the mountainous catchments in sri Lanka. The model is based on the subdivision of the catchment into hillslopes and application of a sediment transport capacity equation at hillslope scale and computation of sediment loads transported to the tanks. Coarse and fine sediment loads due to hourly excess rainfall during a season are separately estimated. The model depends on fewer parameters and can be easily calibrated for a tank. The model calibration only requires measurements of coarse and fine sediment loads transported into the tank due to several rainfalls of different intensities from a representative subcatchment of the tank. Coarse sediment loads are measured by using a sediment trap installed across an ephemeral stream draining the subcatchment. Fine sediment loads are obtained by measuring the discharge and accompanied sediment concentrations over the sediment trap. The model is calibrated, verified and applied for an irrigation tank in sri Lanka to estimate the seasonal sedimentation loads.

Performance of the point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen test in the diagnosis of schistosomiasis japonica in a human cohort from Northern samar, the Philippines

Background:Zoonotic schistosomiasis,caused by schistosoma japonicum,remains a major public health problem in the Philippines.This study aimed to evaluate the commercially available rapid diagnostic point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen(POC-CCA)test in detecting individuals infected with s.japonicum in a human cohort from an endemic area for schistosomiasis japonica in the Philippines.Methods:Clinical samples were collectedin 18 barangays endemic for s.japonicum infection in Laoang and Palapag municipalities,Northern samar,the Philippines,in 2015.The presence of CCA in flter-concentrated urine samples(n=412)was evaluated using the commercial kits and the results were converted to images,which were further analyzed by ImageJ software to calculate r values.The diagnostic performance of the immunochromatographic POCCCA test was compared using the Kato-Katz(KK)procedure,in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays(ELIsAs)and droplet digital(dd)PCr assays as reference.results:The POC-CCA test was able to detect s.japonicum-infected individuals in the cohort with an eggs per gram of faeces(EPG)more than or equal to 10 with sensitivity/specifcity values of 63.3%/93.3%.However,the assay showed an inability to diagnose schistosomiasis japonica infections in all cohort KK-positive individuals,of which the majority had an extremely low egg burden(EPG:1–9).The prevalence of s.japonicum infection in the total cohort determined by the POC-CCA test was 12.4%,only half of that determined by the KK method(26.2%).When compared with the ELIsAs and ddPCr assays as a reference,the POC-CCA assay was further shown to be a test with low sensitivity.Nevertheless,the assay exhibited signifcant positive correlations with egg burden determined by the KK technique and the target gene copy number index values determined by the ddPCr assays within the entire cohort.Conclusions:By using in silico image analysis,the POC-CCA cassette test could be converted to a quantitative assay to avoid reader-variability.Because of its low sensitivity,the

A supportive mobile robot for assisting the elderly is an emerging requirement mainly in countries like Japan where population ageing become relevant in near future.Falls related injuries are considered as a critical issue when taking into account the physical health of older people.A personal assistive robot with the capability of picking up and carrying objects for long/short distances can be used to overcome or lessen this problem.Here,we design and introduce a 3 D dynamic simulation of such an assistive robot to perform pick and place of objects through visual recognition.The robot consists of two major components;a robotic arm or manipulator to do the pick and place,and an omnidirectional wheeled robotic platform to support mobility.Both components are designed and operated according to their kinematics and dynamics and the controllers are integrated for the combined performance.The objective was to improve the accuracy of the robot at a considerably high speed.Designed mobile manipulator has been successfully tested and simulated with a stereo vision system to perform object recognition and tracking in a virtual environment resembling aroom of an elderly care.The tracking accuracy of the mobile manipulator at an average speed of 0.5 m/s is 90%and is well suited for the proposed application.

t Coelomycetous fungi are an artificial taxonomic group which produce conidia inside a cavity i.***.conidiomata.Coelomycetes comprise about,1000 genera and 7000 species,which can be endophytic,pathogenic or saprobic.Traditional classification of coelomycetes was previously based on morphology,such as the shape of conidiomata and mode of conidiogenesis,while it was treated as a distinct group i.e.Deuteromycotina.sequence based taxonomic studies has been used to accommodate asexual fungi in a natural classification system,resolve generic boundaries of polyphyletic genera and species complexes,as well as establish asexual-sexual links.Nevertheless,most of genera lack sequence data,thus,morphology based identification is still important when introducing new genera or species.In this paper we illustrate,describe,and provide taxonomic notes for 235 dematiaceous coelomycetous genera,including five new genera viz.Apiculospora,Didymellocamarosporium,Melanocamarosporium,Melnikia and Paulkirkia.Phylogenetic analyses of combined sequence data are provided to show placements of dematiaceous coelomycetes in Dothideomycetes,Leotiomycetes and sordariomycetes.One-hundred and fifty-two(65%)of genera have sequence data,thus,their taxonomic placement in a natural classification system,is listed as an outline.However,83 genera still lack sequence data,hence,they are treated as Ascomycota,genera incertae sedis.In addition,separate analyses are provided where better taxonomic resolution is needed.

Knowledge of the relationships and thus the classification of fungi,has developed rapidly with increasingly widespread use of molecular techniques,over the past 10–15 years,and continues to accelerate.several genera have been found to be polyphyletic,and their generic concepts have subsequently been emended.New names have thus been introduced for species which are phylogenetically distinct from the type species of particular genera.The ending of the separate naming of morphs of the same species in 2011,has also caused changes in fungal generic names.In order to facilitate access to all important changes,it was desirable to compile these in a single document.The present article provides a list of generic names of Ascomycota(approximately 6500 accepted names published to the end of 2016),including those which are lichen-forming.Notes and summaries of the changes since the last edition of‘Ainsworth&Bisby’s Dictionary of the Fungi’in 2008 are provided.The notes include the number of accepted species,classification,type species(with location of the type material),culture availability,life-styles,distribution,and selected publications that have appeared since 2008.This work is intended to provide the foundation for updating the ascomycete component of the"Without prejudice list of generic names of Fungi"published in 2013,which will be developed into a list of protected generic names.This will be subjected to the XIXth International Botanical Congress in shenzhen in July 2017 agreeing to a modification in the rules relating to protected lists,and scrutiny by procedures determined by the Nomenclature Committee for Fungi(NCF).The previously invalidly published generic names Barriopsis,Collophora(as Collophorina),Cryomyces,Dematiopleospora,Heterospora(as Heterosporicola),Lithophila,Palmomyces(as Palmaria)and saxomyces are validated,as are two previously invalid family names,Bartaliniaceae and Wiesneriomycetaceae.Four species of Lalaria,which were invalidly published are transferred to Taphrina and validated as new combinat

Notes on 113 fungal taxa are compiled in this paper,including 11 new genera,89 new species,one new subspecies,three new combinations and seven reference specimens.Awide geographic and taxonomic range of fungal taxa are detailed.In the Ascomycota the new genera Angustospora(Testudinaceae),Camporesia(Xylariaceae),Clematidis,Crassiparies(Pleosporales genera incertae sedis),Farasanispora,Longiostiolum(Pleosporales genera incertae sedis),Multilocularia(Parabambusicolaceae),Neophaeocryptopus(Dothideaceae),Parameliola(Pleosporales genera incertae sedis),and Towyspora(Lentitheciaceae)are introduced.Newly introduced species are Angustospora nilensis,Aniptodera aquibella,Annulohypoxylon albidiscum,Astrocystis thailandica,Camporesia sambuci,Clematidis italica,Colletotrichum menispermi,C.quinquefoliae,Comoclathris pimpinellae,Crassiparies quadrisporus,Cytospora salicicola,Diatrype thailandica,Dothiorella rhamni,Durotheca macrostroma,Farasanispora avicenniae,Halorosellinia rhizophorae,Humicola koreana,Hypoxylon lilloi,Kirschsteiniothelia tectonae,Lindgomyces okinawaensis,Longiostiolum tectonae,Lophiostoma pseudoarmatisporum,Moelleriella phukhiaoensis,M.pongdueatensis,Mucoharknessia anthoxanthi,Multilocularia bambusae,Multiseptospora thysanolaenae,Neophaeocryptopus cytisi,Ocellularia arachchigei,O.ratnapurensis,Ochronectria thailandica,Ophiocordyceps karstii,Parameliola acaciae,P.dimocarpi,Parastagonospora cumpignensis,Pseudodidymosphaeria phlei,Polyplosphaeria thailandica,Pseudolachnella brevifusiformis,Psiloglonium macrosporum,rhabdodiscus albodenticulatus,rosellinia chiangmaiensis,saccothecium rubi,seimatosporium pseudocornii,s.pseudorosae,sigarispora ononidis and Towyspora aestuari.New combinations are provided for Eutiarosporella dactylidis(sexual morph described and illus trated)and Pseudocamarosporium pini.Descriptions,illustrations and/or reference specimens are designated for Aposphaeria corallinolutea,Cryptovalsa ampelina,Dothiorella vidmadera,Ophiocordyceps formosana,Petrakia echinata,Phragmoporthe conformis and Pse
