Effects of ice storm on species richness and abundance of resident birds in subtropical forest in southern China

Between January and February 2008,a severe ice storm occurred in southern *** storm damaged nearly 21 million hectares of forest lands with broken branch,trunk breakage,and stem bending of many *** natural disturbance provides a unique opportunity to study impacts of extreme climatic event on forest *** hierarchical multi-species occupancy model(species richness;27 species)and N-mixture model(abundance;3 species),we investigated how the storm affected resident bird species in subtropical forest in southern *** sampled birds at Chebaling National Nature Reserve in Guangdong province,monthly for 1 year each before and after the storm by mist *** take into account variations in temperature between years and between months,we incorporated monthly mean temperature into the models as an additional *** species richness was greater before the *** species richness(from the hierarchical model)also tended to be greater before than after the storm although 95%Bayesian credible intervals of these estimates were *** showed a negative effect on estimated species richness,indicating greater species richness during *** three species captured the most,abundance of Chestnut Bulbul(Hemixos castanonotus)significantly decreased after the *** two species,Grey Treepie(Dendrocitta formosae)and Huet’s Fulvetta(Alcippe hueti)showed insignificant responses to the *** study indicates that the 2008 ice storm may not have a significant impact on species richness of resident birds in subtropical forest;however,the effect can be species-specific and negative to some species’population.

Utilization of compressed natural gas for the production of carbon nanotubes

The present work aims at utilizing compressed natural gas （CNG） as carbon source for the synthesis of carbon nanotubes （CNTs） over CoO-MoO/Al2O3 catalyst via catalytic chemical vapor deposition （CCVD） method. The as-produced carbonaceous product was characterized by thermal gravimetric analyzer （TGA）, scanning electron microscopy （sEM）, transmission electron microscopy （TEM） and Raman spectroscopy. The experimental finding shows that CNTs were successfully produced from CNG while carbon nanofibers （CNFs） were formed as the side products. In addition, the catalytic activity and lifetime were found sustained and prolonged, as compared with using high purity methane as carbon source. The present study suggests an alternative route which can effectively produce CNTs and CNFs using low cost CNG.

Under the present changing climate conditions and the observed temperature increase,it is of high importance to understand its effects on aquatic microbial life,and organisms’adaptations at the biochemical *** adjust to temperature or salinity stress and avoid cell damage,organisms alter their degree of fatty acids(FAs)***,temperature is expected to have strong effects on both the quantity and quality of FAs in aquatic *** we review some recent findings about FAs sensitivity to climate change in contrasting ***,heat waves may induce changes in the relative abundance of polyunsaturated FAs(pUFA).However,the impact of the exposure to warming waters is different in temperate and polar *** cold marine waters,high concentration of omega-3(ω3)FAs such as eicosapentaenoic acid(EpA)is promoted due to the activation of the desaturase *** this way,cells have enough energy to produce or activate antioxidant protection mechanisms and avoid oxidative stress due to heat ***,under high irradiance and heat wave conditions in temperate environments,photosystems’protection is achieved by decreasing EpA concentration due to desaturase *** FAs are transferred in aquatic food ***,any alteration in the production of essential FAs by phytoplankton(the main source ofω3)due to climate warming can be transferred to higher trophic levels,with cascading effects for the entire aquatic ecosystem.

Overview of single-port laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancers: past, present, and the future

Compared with solid scintillators,liquid scintillators have limited capability in dosimetry and radiography due to their relatively low light ***,we report a new generation of highly efficient and low-cost liquid scintillators constructed by surface hybridisation of colloidal metal halide perovskite CspbA_(3)(A:Cl,Br,I)nanocrystals(NCs)with organic molecules(2,5-diphenyloxazole).The hybrid liquid scintillators,compared to state-of-the-art CsI and Gd_(2)O_(2)s,demonstrate markedly highly competitive radioluminescence quantum yields under X-ray irradiation typically employed in diagnosis and *** and theoretical analyses suggest that the enhanced quantum yield is associated with X-ray photon-induced charge transfer from the organic molecules to the ***-resolution X-ray imaging is demonstrated using a hybrid CspbBr_(3) NC-based liquid *** novel X-ray scintillation mechanism in our hybrid scintillators could be extended to enhance the quantum yield of various types of scintillators,enabling low-dose radiation detection in various fields,including fundamental science and imaging.
