The improvement of microbial characterization has increased the comprehension of microbial population and their ability in the microbiological metal dissolution. Bioleaching processes have been expanded to use microorganisms for the recovery of metals from ores and wastes. This study introduces.p.lca mine tailings.p.nd in peru which turned into acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is a source of microbial communities whose microorganisms may s.p.ort the aqueous extractive metallurgy for metal recovery. Four samples of AMD were collected from different locations and the elemental characterization showed concentrations of metals, such as Cu, Zn, Al, Mn, and Fe. The pH of the samples showed variation between 1.9 - 6.8. Twenty-one microorganisms were isolated and selected according the cell morphology. 16s rRNA gene sequences identified five species of which three belong to the bacterial kingdom and two to the Fungi kingdom. Two of the bacterial species were ferrous ion oxidizing bacteria, identified as Acidithiobacillus ferriphilus and Acidithiobacillus ferridurans;and the other one a ferric ion reducing bacteria identified as Acidiphilium acidophilum. The fungi species identified were Rhodotorula sinensis and Exophiala xenobiotica, a filamentous fungus isolated for the first time from an AMD.

Nanoscale control of Ag nanostructures for plasmonic fluorescence enhancement of near-infrared dyes

potential utilization of proteins for early detection and diagnosis of various diseases has drawn considerable interest in the development of protein-based detection techniques. Metal induced fluorescence enhancement offers the possibility of increasing the sensitivity of protein detection in clinical applications. We report the use of tunable plasmonic silver nanostructures for the fluorescence enhancement of a near-infrared （NIR） dye （Alexa Fluor 790）. Extensive fluorescence enhan- cement of -2 orders of magnitude is obtained by the nanoscale control of the Ag nanostructure dimensions and interparticle distance. These Ag nanostructures also enhanced fluorescence from a dye with very high quantum yield （7.8 fold for Alexa Fluor 488, quantum efficiency （Qy） = 0.92）. A combination of greatly enhanced excitation and an increased radiative decay rate, leading to an associated enhancement of the quantum efficiency leads to the large enhancement. These results show the potential of Ag nanostructures as metal induced fluorescence enhancement （MIFE） substrates for dyes in the NIR ＂biological window＂ as well as the visible region. Ag nanostructured arrays fabricated by colloidal lithography thus show great potential for NIR dye-based biosensing applications.

Medical Geology,the emerging discipline that focuses on the health impacts of geologic materials and geologic processes,has its roots in Guizhou province,*** the 1980 s *** Baoshan and his students recognized that a large number of people in Guizhou province had clinical symptoms of arsenic poisoning,fluorine exposure,selenosis,and other diseases caused by exposure to potentially toxic trace elements or due to deficiency of essential *** publications and invitations to scientists to visit the province ultimately resulted in increased attention to the health impacts of the natural environment and the formation of scientific societies,the publication of at least a dozen books,and thousands of technical articles on what is now called Medical Geology.

Introduction In December 2003 Episodes.p.blished an article entitled “Medical Geology： New Relevance in the Earth sciences” by Bowman, Bobrowski, and selinus. This.p.per was just one early example of the interest and excitement sparked by this emerging field of medical geology-the impacts of geologic materials and geologic processes on animal and human health. Medical geology attempts to bring together geoscientists and biomedical/public health researchers to address a range of environmental health problems. Much of the impetus for the resurgence of interest in medical geology was a direct result of s.p.ort and encouragement from the International Union of Geological sciences （IUGs） and its former Commission on Geologic sciences for Environmental plan- ning （COGEOENVIRONMENT）.

Because of the growing worldwide demand for maize grain,new alternatives have been sought for breeding of this cereal,e.g.,development of polyembryonic varieties,which agronomic performance could positively impact the grain yield per unit area,and nutritional *** objectives of this study were to(1)determine the phytochemicals.p.esent in the embryo and endosperm of grain from maize families with high,low,and null polyembryony frequency,which were planted at different locations,and(2)state the relationship between these compounds and seed *** extracted phytochemicals from corn were identified by *** results showed that the genotype with the highest presence of phytochemicals was the brachytic population with high polyembryony called“BAp”,which also required less water during the germination *** number of phytochemicals in both embryo and endosperm tissues was not related to the sowing location where they came from or the type of *** number of different phytochemicals depended on the grain tissue from where they were *** chemical compounds found in the different maize tissues were related to the development of the plant,either in roots or nibs because these are mainly associated with the lignin synthesis.

Objective:Intra-abdominal fat is a risk factor for pancreatic cancer(pC),but little is known about its contribution to pC precursors known as intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms(IpMNs).Our goal was to evaluate quantitative radiologic measures of abdominal/visceral obesity as.p.ssible diagnostic markers of IpMN severity/***:In a cohort of 34 surgically-resected,pathologically-confirmed IpMNs(17 benign;17 malignant) with preoperative abdominal computed tomography(CT) images,we calculated body mass index(BMI) and four radiologic measures of obesity:total abdominal fat(TAF) area,visceral fat area(VFA),subcutaneous fat area(sFA),and visceral to subcutaneous fat ratio(V/s).Measures were compared between groups using Wilcoxon two-sample exact tests and other ***:Mean BMI for individuals with malignant IpMNs(28.9 kg/m^2) was higher than mean BMI for those with benign IpMNs(25.8 kg/m^2)(p=0.045).Mean VFA was higher for patients with malignant IpMNs(199.3 cm^2) compared to benign IpMNs(120.4cm^2),p=0.092.V/s was significantly higher(p=0.013) for patients with malignant versus benign IpMNs(1.25 vs.0.69 cm^2),especially among *** accuracy,sensitivity,specificity,and positive and negative predictive value of V/s in predicting malignant IpMN pathology were 74%,71%,76%,75%,and 72%,***:preliminary findings suggest measures of visceral fat from routine medical images may help predict IpMN pathology,acting as.p.tential noninvasive diagnostic adjuncts for management and targets for intervention that may be more biologically-relevant than *** investigation of gender-specific associations in larger,prospective IpMN cohorts is warranted to validate and expand upon these observations.

葡萄渣浓缩物含有丰富的具有强抗氧化能力的多酚。试验旨在研究α-生育酚盐酸盐(200mg/kg)及15g/kg、30g/kg、60g/kg三个水平的葡萄渣浓缩物(GpC)对肉鸡(21～42日龄)的生产性能、消化器官容量、蛋白质、脂肪、冰冻胸肌的氧化易感性、水解多酚和缩合丹宁的可消化性以及日粮、血清、回肠内容物和排泄物的抗氧化活性等方面的影响。GpC对生产性能、回肠粗蛋白表观消化率、肠相关长度及腹脂、肝脏、胰腺、脾脏的相对重量不产生影响。在基础日粮、添加GpC日粮与添加维生素E的日粮对照中,后者实验鸡的脂肪消化率较前两者高。GpC日粮能减少回肠和粪便中水解多酚的可消化性。水解多酚和缩合丹宁在回肠粪便中的的消化率分别为56%～73%和14%～47%。GpC日粮能减少回肠和粪便中水解多酚的可消化性。GpC日粮、回肠内容物和排泄物[2,2-联氮基-双-(3-乙基苯并二氢噻唑啉)-6-磺酸法]抗氧化活性以及GpC日粮(三价铁抗氧化能力方式)较基础日粮和维生素E日粮具有更高的清除自由基能力。饲喂维生素E日粮与基础日粮相比,胸肌在分别冰冻储存1、4和7d后油脂氧化作用降低。而饲喂GpC日粮与维生素E日粮相比,鸡胸肌在分别储存1、4、7d后在氧化稳定性方面更平衡。总之,添加GpC(达到60g/kg)的日粮不会对肉鸡的生长性能、消化器官容量以及蛋白质的消化性能产生影响。水解多酚与缩合丹宁相比更具生物有效性。GpC日粮中的日粮、排泄物、回肠内容物和胸肌的抗氧化能力皆有提高。GpC添加物具有与维生素E相同的抗氧化效果。基于这些发现,我们可以推断GpC在动物营养中将是一种新的抗氧化剂资源。

Background: Any healthcare facility must be prepared to handle a dramatic increase in deaths that can be produced by a catastrophic disaster. A mass fatality incident (MFI) will significantly increase the usual number of deaths that hospitals or forensic science services can manage on a daily basis. A survey was conducted to assess the hospital emergency department level of preparedness to deal with an MFI. Objective: To examine healthcare facilities level of preparedness for an MFI and morgue capacity. Methods: A total of 39 out of a sample of 44 hospitals.p.rticipated in the study. seven questionnaires were administered to explore: hospital general characteristics;emergency plans;equipment and infrastructure;collaborative agreements.p.rsonnel trainings;emergency communications;laboratory facilities;treatment protocols;security;and, epidemiologic surveillance. Results: Three-fourths (79.5%) of the healthcare facilities reported having a morgue, their average storage capacity was of three bodies. More than two-thirds (66.7%) of the institutions stated that they could not increase their morgue’s capacity. Most installations without a morgue do not possess an agreement with any other institution for the management of bodies. Hospitals have a very limited number of body bags utilized for the handling and transport of bodies. Conclusion: Most of healthcare facilities have morgues, but there are limitations with the current capacity and the lack of resources to increase their capacity in case of a disaster. Management of an MFI must be part of every hospital’s emergency plan, and must include collaborative agreements with forensic authorities, emergency management and public health agencies, and the community.
