Inland-coastal demographic transformations in a karst area:a case study of the surroundings of Krka National Park(Croatia)

Impact of enclosure management on soil properties and microbial biomass in a restored semi-arid rangeland, Kenya

Rangeland degradation is a serious problem throughout sub-saharan Africa and its restoration is a challenge for the management of arid and semi-arid areas. In Lake Baringo Basin of Kenya, communities and individual farmers are restoring indigenous vegetation inside enclosures in an effort to combat severe land degradation and address their livelihood problems. This study evaluated the impact of enclosure management on soil properties and microbial biomass, being key indicators of soil ecosystem health. six reseeded communal enclosures using soil embankments as water-harvesting structures and strictly regulated access were selected, varying in age from 13 to 23 years. In six private enclosures, ranging from 3 to 17 years in age, individual farmers emulated the communal enclosure strategy and restored areas for their exclusive use. significant decreases in bulk density, and increases in the soil organic carbon, total nitrogen and microbial biomass contents and stocks were found in the enclosures as compared with the degraded open rangeland. In the private enclosures, the impact of rehabilitation on the soil quality was variable, and soil quality was in general lower than that obtained under communal management. The significant increase of absolute stocks of carbon, nitrogen and microbial biomass compared to the degraded open rangeland indicates the potential for the restoration of soil quality through range rehabilitation. Over-sowing with indigenous legume fodder species could improve total nitrogen content in the soil and nutritional value of the pastures as well.

Local infiltration and distal dissemination of tumor cells hamper efficacy of current treatments against central nervous system(CNs)tumors and greatly influence mortality and therapy-induced long-term morbidity in survivors.A number of in vitro and ex vivo assay systems have been established to better understand the infiltration and metastatic processes,to search for molecules that specifically block tumor cell infiltration and metastatic dissemination and to pre-clinically evaluate their *** systems allow analytical testing of tumor cell viability and motile and invasive capabilities in simplified and well-controlled ***,the urgent need for novel anti-metastatic therapies has provided an incentive for the further development of not only classical in vitro methods but also of novel,physiologically more relevant assay systems including organotypic brain slice *** this review,using publicly available peer-reviewed primary research and review articles,we provide an overview of a selection of in vitro and ex vivo techniques widely used to study growth and dissemination of primary metastatic brain ***,we discuss how our steadily increasing knowledge of tumor biology and the tumor microenvironment could be integrated to improve current research methods for metastatic brain *** believe that such rationally improved methods will ultimately increase our understanding of the biology of brain tumors and facilitate the development of more efficacious anti-metastatic treatments.

Fibrogenesis in inflammatory bowel diseases is a complex phenomenon aimed at mucosal repair. However, it may provoke intestinal fibrosis with the development of strictures which require surgery. Therefore, fibrogenesis may be considered as a 'two-faced' process when related to chronic intestinal inflammation. Many types of cells may be converted into the fibrogenic phenotype at different levels of the intestinal wall. A complex interaction of cytokines, adhesion molecules and growth factors is involved in the process. We report an overview of recent advances in molecular mechanisms of stricturizing Crohn’s disease(CD) including the potential role of trasforming growth factor beta, protein kinase C and Ras, Raf and ERK proteins. Fibrotic growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor and platelet-derived growth factor, as well as the Endothelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition induced by transforming growth factor-β, are considered. Finally, our experience, focused on tumor necrosis factor α(the main cytokine of inflammatory bowel diseases) and the link between syndecan 1(a heparan sulphate adhesion molecule) and basic fibroblast growth factor(a strong stimulator of collagen synthesis) is described. We hypothesize a possible molecular pattern for mucosal healing as well as how its deregulation could be involved in fibrotic complications of CD. A final clinical point is the importance of performing an accurate evaluation of the presence of fibrotic strictures before starting anti-tumor necrosis α treatment, which could worsen the lesions.

Background: several studies have shown that persons with schizophrenia (PWs) suffer from severely reduced quality of life (QoL). Impaired social functioning is a defining characteristic of schizophrenia (sZ) and social cognition deficits affect interpersonal relations and outcomes such as independent living, vocational functioning and employment status. some studies have demonstrated important socio-cultural aspects of sZ, for instance by examining experiences of sZ in different developing countries and among minority groups in the Western world. The socio-cultural context is central to understanding patients’ experiences in any society, however. Using an anthropological approach, we use qualitative research methods to examine patient perspectives on sZ. sampling and Methods: In-depth qualitative interviews are carried out with sZ patients in France, the UK and the UsA representing diversity in Western mental health systems. Results: To the participants, the most important QoL aspects are close relations and support from loved ones, a safe home and comfort zone, and meaningful daily activities. Normalisation and independence act as central themes to patients’ QoL and hopes for social integration. The participants need a buffer zone consisting of social relations, a home and daily occupation that is flexible and may balance issues of equality/inequality, abnormality/normality, and dependence/independence. Conclusion: By using participatory methods, PWs may be involved in shaping their own treatment and recovery plans based on what is subjectively meaningful and beneficial to their mental health. QoL and functioning are closely linked to the socio-cultural context in which health care structures go hand in hand with health care cultures that shape patients’ expectations and preferences.

To report results of implantation of the Ex-PREss Miniature Glaucoma Implant (Optonol, neve Ilan, Israel) shunt directly under the conjunctiva in advanced gl aucoma. Noncomparative case series. Chart review of eleven cases of Ex-PREss im plantation. Outcome measures included intraocular pressure (IOP), complications, visual acuity, and additional interventions. Failure was defined as unacceptabl y high IOP requiring revision or explantation. Four patients (36%) failed. Ten (91%) experienced hypotony during postoperative week one. In the seven nonfailu res, mean pre and postoperative IOPs were 30.3 ±9.3 mm Hg and 13.6 ±4.4 mm Hg, respectively (P=. 006). The logMAR visual acuity did not change significantly f rom baseline to follow up (logMAR 1.1 ±0.9 and 1.4 ±0.9, respectively, P=. 13) . There were no intraoperative complications. Postoperative complications in the 11 eyes included choroidal detachment in 3 (27%) and suprachoroidal hemorrhage in 2 (18%). Of the 7 successful cases, additional interventions were required in 4 (57%). Despite significant IOP reduction, the incidence of complications f ollowing Ex-PREss implantation directly under the conjunctiva was unacceptably high in this group of patients.
