Extraction of sodium atoms from a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) bya coherent. stimulated Raman process is demonstrated. Optical Raman pulsesdrive transitions between trapped and untrapped magnetic sublevels. giving theoutput-coupled BEC fraction a well-defined momentum. The pulsed outputcoupling can be run at such a rate that the extracted atomic wave packetsstrongly overlap, forming a highly directional. quasi-continuous matter wave.

We have observed Bragg diffraction ofa Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium atoms by a moving,periodic,optical *** coherent process of Bragg diffraction prcduced a spitting of thecondensate with unidirectional momentum *** the momentum selectivity of the Braggprocess,we separated a condensate component with a momentrm Width narrower than that of theoriginal *** repeatedly pulsing the optical potential while the atoms were *** observed the trajectory of the split atomic wave packets in the confining magnetic potential.[s0031-9007(98)08316-1]

We analyze and experimentally demonstrate a new(temporal)Talbot effect,where a pulsed phasegrating is applied to a cloud of cold atoms(Bose-Einstein condensate).In contrast to the usual(spatial)Talbot effect,our atoms gain kinetic energy when diffracted by the pulsed *** energy gain andthe matter-wave-dispersion relation result in an exact(no pxraxial approximation)Talbot effect where theinitial wave front is reconstructed at multiples of a“Talbot tune”*** demonstrate the Talbot effectby applying a second pulsed phase grating after a variable *** this second grating is applied ateven(odd)multiples of r/2,it doubles(cancels)the effect of the first pulsed grating.

The advent of the laser as an intense source of coherent light gaverist to monlinear optics,which now plays an important role inmany areas of science and *** of the first applicationsof nonlinear optics was the multi-wave mixing of several opticalfields in a nonlinear medium(one in which the refractive indexdepends on the intensity of the field)to produce coherent light of anew *** recent experimental rcalization of the matter-wave ‘laser‘ —based on the extraction ol coherent atoms from aBost-Einstein condensate—opens th‘ way for analogous experi-ments with intense sources of matter waves:nonlinear *** we report coherent four-wave mixing in whichthree sodium matter waves of differing momenta mir to produce,by means of nonlinear atom-atom interactions,a fourth wavewith new *** find a clear signature of a four-wavemixing process in the dependence of the generated matter wave onthe densities of the input *** results may ultimatelyfacilitate the production and investigation of quantum correlationsbetween matter waves.

We present experimental and theorerical studies of the coherence properties of a Bode-Einsteincondensate(BEC)using an interference *** optical standing wave pulses of duration100 ns and separation Δt are applied to a *** standing wave phase grating makes smallcopies of the condensate displaced in momentum *** quantum mechanical amplitudes of eachcopy *** on Δt and on spatial phase variations across the *** find thatthe behavior of a trapped BEC is consistent with a uniform spatial phase.A releared *** large phase variation across the condensate.

Quantum phase engineering is demonstrated with two novel techniques thatallow the spatial phase distribution of a Bose-Einstein condensate(BEC) to bewritten and read out.A quantum state was designed and produced by opticallyimprinting a phase pattern onto a BEC of sodium atoms,and matter-waveinterferometry with spatially resolved imaging was used to analyze the re-sultant phase *** appropriate phase imprint created *** experimental realization of this nonlinear phenomenon in a BEC Thesubsequent evolution of these excitations was investigated both experimentallyand theoretically.

In this work,we compare different methods for implementing a triplicator,a phase grating that generates three equiintense diffraction *** design with optimal efficiency features a continuous phase profile,which cannot be easily reproduced,and is typically affected by *** compare its performance with binary and sinusoidal phase *** also analyze the effect of quantizing the phase ***,a random approach is adopted to eliminate the additional harmonic *** all cases,a liquid-crystal-on-silicon spatial light modulator is employed to experimentally verify and compare the different approaches.

Nd^(3+)-doped tellurite glasses are promising materials for thermometers based on the fluorescence intensity ratio(FIR)***,at high Nd^(3+)concentrations,energy transfer(ET)processes such as optical reabsorption and cross-relaxation can affect the Nd^(3+)emission,which has been little explored in the ***,the present work investigated the use of Nd^(3+)-doped tellurite glass(samples doped with Nd^(3+)at 0.2 mol%,0.5 mol%,2.0 mol%,and 4.0 mol%)in fluorescence thermometers,in the temperature range from 299 to 371 *** results indicate a strong dependence of the FIR parameters on the Nd^(3+)concentration,due to changes in the emission band profiles caused by optical reabsorption of the Nd^(3+)emissions and cross-relaxation processes.A decrease of the relative sensitivity of the ratio^(4)F_(5/2)→^(4)I_(9/2)/^(4)F_(3/2)→^(4)I_(9/2)is observed for samples doped with higher amounts of Nd^(3+).The maximum relative sensitivity at 299 K is 3.00%/K,which is the highest value among the reported Nd^(3+)ions.
