Fault on-off versus coseismic fluids reaction

The fault activation （fault on） interrupts the enduring fault locking （fault off） and marks the end of a seismic cycle in which the brittle-ductile transition （BDT） acts as a sort of switch. We suggest that the fluid flow rates differ during the different periods of the seismic cycle （interseismic, pre-seismic, coseismic and post-seismic） and in particular as a function of the tectonic style. Regional examples indicate that tectonic-related fluids anomalies depend on the stage of the tectonic cycle and the tectonic style. Although it is difficult to model an increasing permeability with depth and several BDT transitions plus independent acquicludes may occur in the crust, we devised the simplest numerical model of a fault constantly shearing in the ductile deeper crust while being locked in the brittle shallow layer, with variable homogeneous permeabilities. The results indicate different behaviors in the three main tectonic settings. In tensional tectonics, a stretched band antithetic to the normal fault forms above the BDT during the interseismic period. Fractures close and fluids are expellecl during the coseismic stage. The mechanism reverses in compressional tectonics. During the interseismic stage, an over-compressed band forms above the BDT. The band dilates while rebounding in the coseismic stage and attracts fluids locally. At the tip lines along strike-slip faults, two couples of subvertical bancls show different behavior, one in dilationJcompression and one in compressionJdilation. This deformation pattern inverts during the coseismic stage. sometimes a pre-seismic stage in which fluids start moving may be observed and could potentially become a precursor.

We propose that the brittle-ductile transition （BDT） controls the seismic cycle. In particular, the movements detected by space geodesy record the steady state deformation in the ductile lower crust, whereas the stick-slip behavior of the brittle upper crust is constrained by its larger friction. GPs data allow analyzing the strain rate along active plate boundaries. In all tectonic settings, we propose that earthquakes primarily occur along active fault segments characterized by relative minima of strain rate, segments which are locked or slowly creeping. We discuss regional examples where large earthquakes happened in areas of relative low strain rate. Regardless the tectonic style, the interseismic stress and strain pattern inverts during the coseismic stage. Where a dilated band formed during the interseismic stage, this will be shortened at the coseismic stage, and vice-versa what was previously shortened, it will be dilated. The interseismic energy accumulation and the coseismic expenditure rather depend on the tectonic setting （extensional, contractional, or strike-slip）. The gravitational potential energy dominates along normal faults, whereas the elastic energy prevails for thrust earthquakes and performs work against the gravity force. The energy budget in strike-slip tectonic setting is also primarily due elastic energy. Therefore, precursors may be different as a function of the tectonic setting. In this model, with a given displacement, the magnitude of an earthquake results from the coseismic slip of the deformed volume above the BDT rather than only on the fault length, and it also depends on the fault kinematics.

The aims of this work turn towards the valorization of the underutilized Raw sugar Beet Pulp by-product to produce white Cellulose Microfibers(CMFs),and its potential effect as a reinforcement for the development of High-Density Polyethylene(HDPE)*** CMFs were first obtained by subjecting raw sBP to alkali and bleaching *** characterization techniques were performed to confirm the successful removal of the amorphous compounds from the surface of individual fibers,including sEM,XRD,TGA,and FT-IR *** CMF loadings(5–10 wt%)were incorporated as bio-fillers into HDPE polymer to evaluate their reinforcing ability in comparison to raw and alkali-treated sBP using twin-screw extrusion followed by injection ***–(Ethylene–Butene)–styrene Three-Block Co-Polymer Grafted with Maleic Anhydride was used as a compatibilizer to improve the interfacial adhesion between fibers and the ***,mechanical,and rheological properties of the produced composite samples were *** was found that the Young’s modulus were gradually increased with increasing of fibers loadings,with a maximum increase of 30%and 26%observed for composite containing 10 wt%of CMFs and raw sBP,respectively,over neat ***,the use of coupling agent enhances the ductile behavior of the *** was also found that all fiber improves the hardness and toughness behavior of all reinforced composites as well as the complex modulus particularly at 10 wt%.The thermal stability slightly increases with the addition of *** study demonstrates a new route for the valorization of sBP *** fibers can be considered as a valuable bio-fillers candidate for the development of composite materials with enhanced properties.

The Bayamo Earthquake (Cuba) of the 18 October 1551

Using contemporary and original documents from the Archivo General de Indias it has been possible to complete the data for the 18 October 1551 earthquake in Cuba. The seism took place at midday, approximately. It had foreshocks and aftershocks. In Bayamo, 7 inhabitants were injured, and the town was severely affected. Maximum seismic intensity was IX degrees on the MsK scale, and the area of perceptibility is estimated at 40,000 km2. Liquefaction processes and soil type in Bayamo contributed to the damage. This locality is in the Eastern region of the island, and continues to suffer the most and the strongest seismic events. The epicenter was in the southern marine area of the western segment of Oriente trough (19.6 N 77.8 W, h = 15 km, Ms = 6.6), where there is a crossing of faults, and neotectonics and focal mechanisms are affected by transtension, although the Bartlett-Cayman region’s tendency to left-lateral strike-slip movement is maintained, in the Caribbean and North American plate boundary zone.

Modern brain tumor surgery stands in the pillar of maximum safe *** borders are always challenging,especially infiltration zones in malignant brain *** technologies are designed for a better delineation and to increase the extent of resection(EOR)in brain tumor surgery,such as:cortical and sub-cortical mapping strategies with somatosensory-evoked potentials,awake stimulation mapping and cortical/sub-cortical stimulation for motor pathways,important for resection in eloquent areas;intra-operative imaging as functional and intra-operative magnetic resonance imaging,diffusion tensor imaging and intra-operative ultrasound are important for the tumor borders and to achieve the gross total resection;neurochemical navigation methods as 5-aminolevulinic and sodium fluorescein are important for the non-contrast-enhanced tumor border;future methods can be achieved with augmented reality surgery,new intra-operative chemical markers,and visualization *** all these techniques seem to be promising,the real challenge in the future will be held in how to apply them and how they really affect the prognosis of the ***,new concepts in tumor genetics will provide knowledge for the tumor behavior and will guide *** all limitations,the increasing importance of safe EOR shows the possible benefits of the novel technologies and surgical advances in brain tumor surgery,taking it to a new step of the neuronavigation era.

Palm Oil Production in Malaysia: An Analytical systems Model for Balancing Economic Prosperity, Forest Conservation and social Welfare

since the late 1950’s, the Malaysian human population has nearly quadrupled, increasing pressure on natural resource exploitation to meet domestic needs and to earn foreign exchange from exports. Global demand for Malaysian palm oil in particular had steeply increased since the mid-1970s and by 2013, the commodity was the leading foreign exchange earner. To fulfill and sustain this demand, the country’s economy has steadily shifted bias towards production and associated value addition of palm oil products for export. However, as a consequence, many of Malaysia’s natural tropical forests have been converted to palm oil farming resulting in loss of approximately 10,000 km2 of forest cover over the past twenty-five years, and biodiversity has been displaced or lost. To provide a deeper insight into the interplay amongst key interrelated environmental and socio-economic variables, and a forecast of possible future balance, we used a systems dynamism modeling tool, sTELLAR (structural thinking, experiential learning laboratory with animation), to simulate and project how Malaysia could achieve a medium-term sustainable balance or optimization between palm oil production and forest conservation without compromising on human social welfare. The model consisted of four main modules (environmental, economic, social development and human welfare) each with component parameters, and interconnected by input and output loops. Model calibrations, testing and preruns involved existing official 30-year time-series datasets. subsequently, four scenarios: Environmental conservation;Economic growth under increased global palm oil demand;Economy decline under decreased palm oil demand;and Control condition with little or no change, were selected for simulated projections of future possibilities. simulation results showed that scenarios and variable interactions that reduce environmental damage would offer the best chance for optimizing the palm oil economy while also minimizing forest

A QTL associated with leaf trichome traits has a major influence on the abundance of the predatory mite Typhlodromus pyri in a hybrid grapevine population

The abundance of predatory phytoseiid mites,Typhlodromus pyri,important biological control agents of spider mite pests in numerous crops,is positively influenced by the density of leaf trichomes and tuft-form domatia in vein *** of the genetic regions controlling both trophic levels could facilitate the improvement of predatory mite habitat in breeding *** abundance of *** and non-glandular trichomes was measured in a segregating F1 family derived from the cross of the complex Vitis hybrid,‘Horizon’,with Illinois 547-1(*** B38×*** B9),finding positive correlation among *** density genetic maps were used to localize one major quantitative trait locus(QTL)on chromosome 1 of Illinois 547-1 associated with both predatory mite abundance and leaf *** QTL explained 23%of the variation in phytoseiid abundance and similar amounts of variance in domatia rating(21%),domatia size(16%),leaf bristle density(37%in veins and 33%in blades),and leaf hair density(20%in veins and 15%in blades).Another nine QTL distributed among chromosomes 1,2,5,8,and 15 were associated solely with trichome density,and explained 7–17%of the phenotypic ***,our results provide evidence of the genetic architecture of non-glandular trichomes in Vitis,with a major locus influencing trichome densities,domatia size and predatory mite *** information is relevant for breeding grapevines with a more favorable habitat for biological control agents.

Flame Thermal spray (FTs) coatings frequently show some porosity and reduced adherence to substrate, which affect its properties, especially its corrosion resistance. In this work, the corrosion resistance of AIsI 1018 carbon steel coated by different methods is compared: electroless nickel (EN) coating, NiCrFeBsi obtained by FTs, duplex coatings of an EN deposit on a layer of NiCrFeBsi obtained by FTs and a layer of NiCrFeBsi on an EN deposit. The coatings were characterized using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques, EDs microprobe microanalysis, roughness as well as electrochemical polarization tests to obtain the corrosion rate. The results show the enhancement in the corrosion resistance in saline medium of the duplex coatings, especially of the EN coating on FTs layer.
