Energetic neutral atoms(ENAs)are produced by the neutralization of energetic ions formed by shock-accelerated gradual solar energetic particle events(sEP).These high-energy ENAs(HENAs)can reach the Earth earlier than the associated sEPs and thus can provide information about the sEPs at the lower *** HENA properties observed at Earth depend on the properties of the coronal mass ejection(CME)-driven shocks that accelerate the *** a model of HENA production in a shock-accelerated sEP event,we semi-quantitatively investigate the energy-time spectrum of HENAs depending on the width,propagation speed,and direction of the shock,as well as the density and ion abundances of the lower *** to the baseline model parameters,the cases with a wider shock width angle or a higher coronal density would increase the HENA flux observed at the Earth,while the case with an Earthpropagating shock shows a softened HENA *** comparison of expected HENA fluxes in different cases with a flight-proven ENA instrument suggests that solar HENAs can feasibly be monitored with current technologies,which could provide a lead time of 2−3 hours for sEPs at a few *** propose that monitoring of solar HENAs could provide a new method to forecast shock-driven sEP events that are capable of significant space weather impacts on the near-Earth environment.

A complete record is available in ENA data of ring current activity recorded by the NUADU instrument aboard TC-2 on 15 May, 2005 during a major magnetic storm (including a substorm that occurred in the recovery phase) (. Comparisons of the ion fluxes derived from ENA data in the energy ranges 50-81 keV and 81-158 keV with in situ particle fluxes measured by the LANL-sOPA instruments aboard LANL-01, LANL-02, LANL-97 and LANL-84 (a series of geosynchronous satellites that encircle the equatorial plane at 6.6 RE near the outer radiation belt) are presented. It is shown that ion injections into the ring current began from the dayside. During the storm the pressure of the solar wind compressed the magnetopause Earthward so that ions spiraling around magnetic field lines in the magnetosphere were energized on the dayside and flowed poleward along the magnetic field lines. It was deduced that energetic ions could drift eastward into the night side from the dusk side along the magnetic field gradient beyond Bz stward flowing ring current (ERC) in the polar regions. During the rising phase of the ring current, the ERC acted to restrain the growth of the accompanying negative sYM-H index, even causing it to reduce. This effect provides a diagnostic signature of the ERC. During the recovery phase of the storm the magnetosphere on the dayside expanded anti-Earthward, and those energetic ions collected in the dusk-night sector during the main phase of the storm were impelled at low latitudes (Bz > 0) under the westward gradient-B drift to pass through the dusk side to the dayside.

2005年8月24日磁暴期间(Dst=-219nT),TC-2卫星上的中性原子成像仪(NUADU)观测到了绕近地等离子体片区磁力线作螺旋运动的全空间4π立体角离子通量分布.在TC-2卫星历时34min的多次穿越等离子体片过程中,多个能量离子束事件均具有绕磁力线呈现两个对称环状离子通量分布特征.在每一次穿越等离子体片过程中低频波探测器(LFEW/TC-2)都探测到了频率略高于低混杂波摸的哨声波摸合声的增强.比较离子投掷角分布与磁场,我们发现场向能量离子通量增强总伴随有等离子体片磁力线的尾向拉伸;垂直磁力线方向的能量离子通量增强却伴随有等离子体片磁力线的地向压缩,并出现总磁场强度的峰值.由于平行和垂直磁力线的离子通量增强是间歇性地交替出现,探测数据揭示了一种近地等离子体片磁力线的纵向振荡(磁力线的尾向拉伸和地向收缩)过程,这有助于在近地等离子体片区域形成离子与场的相互作用区,从而触发磁暴期间的连续极光亚暴.

The magnetotail current sheet is active and often flaps back and *** about the flapping motion of current sheet is essential to explore the related magnetotail dynamic processes,e.g.,plasma *** to the inability of single-point measurements to separate the spatial-temporal variation of magnetic field,the moving velocity of flapping current sheets cannot be revealed generally until the multipoint measurements are available,e.g.,the Cluster ***,currently,the flapping behaviors are hard to be resolved only relying on single-point magnetic field *** this study,with minimum variance analysis,we develop a technique based on single-point magnetic field measurement to qualitatively diagnose the flapping properties including the flapping type and the traveling direction of kink-like *** comparison with Cluster multipoint analysis via several case studies demonstrates that this technique is applicable;it should,however,be used with caution especially when the local sheet surface is either quasi-horizontal,or *** technique will be useful for the planetary magnetotail exploration where no multipoint observations are available.

With a newly developed technique and magnetic field measurements obtained by the magnetometer on Venus Express,we study the flapping motion of the Venusian *** find that the flapping motion generally comprises contributions both from a nonpropagating steady flapping and a propagating kink-like *** flapping motion tilts the current sheet normal significantly in the plane perpendicular to the Venus-sun *** kink-like flapping waves traveling along solar wind electric field or its antidirection can be found in either magnetotail hemisphere where solar wind electric field pointing toward/*** traveling behaviors suggest that the locations of the triggers for kink-like flappings are near the boundaries between magnetotail current sheet and magnetosheath,not near the central region of magnetotail as is for the Earth’s magnetotail.

Knowledge of the magnetic field morphology in the near-Venus wake is essential to the studies of magnetotail dynamics and the planetary plasma *** this study we use the magnetic field measurements made by Venus Express during the period of April 2006 to December 2012 to investigate the global magnetic field morphology in the near-Venus magnetotail(0-3 Venusian radii,R,down tail) in the frame of solar wind electric field *** hemisphere with electric field pointing toward/away is indicated as ±E *** has been reported that the cross-tail field component has a hemispheric asymmetry in the Venusian *** report here that this asymmetry should have been formed at the terminator and would transport *** addition,we find that the draped magnetic field lines near both hemispheric flanks are directed equatorward in the region 0-1.5 Rv down tail as it looks like "sinking" into Venus *** estimate the thickness of the magnetotail current sheet and the current density at the sheet *** find that the average half thickness of central current sheet near +E hemispheric flank(60 km) is almost twice as thick as that near magnetic equatorial plane(00 km),but the corresponding current densities at the sheet center are comparable(.0 nA/m).As a result,the larger cross-tail field component found near the +E hemispheric flank suggests a stronger tailward j×B force,i.e.,the more efficient tailward acceleration of plasma in this region,showing the agreement with previous observations of heavy ion outflow from *** contrast,the average magnetic field structure near —E hemispheric flank is irregular,which suggests that dynamic activities,such as magnetic reconnection and magnetic field turbulence,preferentially appear there.

A method is presented for retrieving the magnetospheric ion distribution from En-ergetic Neutral Atom (ENA) measurements made by the NUADU instrument on the TC-2 spacecraft. Based on the already well-established method of constrained lin-ear inversion, an iterance technique suitable for the low count ENA measurements has been developed which is tolerant of the noise background. By the iterance technique, it is possible for the first time to simultaneously retrieve the magneto-spheric ion distribution and the exospheric neutral density, and further to recover global ENA emissions in three dimensions. The technique is applied to a repre-sentative ENA image recorded in energy channel 2 (protons: 50―81 keV) of the NUADU instrument during a major geomagnetic storm and it is, thereby, shown that the retrieval method developed provides a useful tool for extracting ion distribution information from ENA data.

Third generation synchrotron X-rays provide an unprecedented opportu- nity for microstructural characterization of many engineering materials as well as natural materials. This article demonstrates the usage of three techniques for the study of structural materials： differential-aperture X-ray microscopy （DAXM）, three-dimensional X- ray diffraction （3DXRD）, and simultaneous wide angle/small angle X-ray scattering （WAXs/sAXs）. DAXM is able to measure the 3D grain structure in polycrystalline materials with high spatial and angular resolution. In a deformed material, streaked diffraction peaks can be used to analyze local dislocation content in individual grains. Compared to DAXM, 3DXRD is able to map grains in bulk materials more quickly at the expense of spatial resolution. It is very useful for studying evolving microstructures when the materials are under deformation. WAXs/sAXs is suitable for studying materials with inhomogeneous structure, such as precipitate strengthened alloys. structural informa- tion revealed by WAXs and sAXs can be combined for a deeper insight into material behavior. Future development and applications of these three techniques will also be discussed.
