Effect of early atopic sensitization in children aged 0–2 years on the development of asthma symptoms at 9–11 years of age

Background Personal genetic predisposition and early life environmental factors are important for the development of childhood asthma.We aimed to search whether egg,milk and mite sensitizations at 0–2 years old are risk factors for asthma symptoms at 9–11 years old.Methods A total of 210 wheezer children who had specific immunoglobulin(Ig)E in 2010–2012 were included in the study(followed by pediatric allergy).Patients were divided into non-atopic(group 1,n=157)and atopic patients[groups 2–7,n=53(5 patients were in both group 4 and group 5)]based on sensitizations.Using the International study of Asthma and Allergy in Childhood questionnaire,current wheeze(CW,2nd question),exercise wheezing(EW,7th question),and dry cough(DC,8th question)were surveyed.Also,parental allergies,eczema at 0–2 years,current eosinophil percentage and total IgE were recorded.Results Eczema was observed as an important risk factor[CW:odds ratio(OR)=2.83,95%confidence interval(CI)=1.54–5.23,P≤0.001;EW:OR=2.71,95%CI=1.33–5.54,P=0.006;DC:OR=3.03,95%CI=1.47–6.25,P=0.003],whereas having no atopic sensitization at 0–2-year-old(group 1)was found as a significant protective factor for asthma at 9–11 years old(CW:OR=0.32,95%CI=0.15–0.70,P=0.004;EW:OR=0.21,95%CI 0.10–0.44,P≤0.001;DC:OR=0.25,95%CI=0.10–0.59,P=0.002).Conclusion Early personal eczema is a significant risk factor for the development of asthma symptoms at 9–11 years old,whereas not having an allergic sensitization at 0–2 years old(group 1)is an important protective factor.

Do we control gastric residuals unnecessarily in premature newborns?AGRA study:avoidance of gastric residual aspiration

BACKGROUND ground Aspiration and evaluation of gastric residuals are commonly performed interventions before each feeding in intensive care units,especially in very low birthweight infants.However,there is no sufficient evidence about the necessity of routine gastric residual aspiration.In this study,we aimed to investigate the time to full enteral intake and the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis(NEC)in preterm infants in the period with gastric residual aspiration performed before each feeding,and those in the period without gastric residual aspiration.Methods Preterm infants with a gestational week≤33 were included in the study.The group with gastric residual control before each feeding consisted of 169 infants,and the group without routine gastric residual aspiration included 122 infants.results The mean gestational week was 30.37±2.58 and 29.31±3.37 in the group with gastric residual control and in the group without routine residual control,respectively(psimilar between both groups.The time to full enteral intake was shorter in the group without routine residual control(ps of parenteral nutrition,≥grade 2 NEC,weight at discharge and duration of hospitalization were similar between the groups.Duration of invasive mechanical ventilator support was shorter in the group without routine residual control.Conclusion Avoidance of routine gastric residual aspiration in preterm infants shortens the time to full enteral intake without increasing the incidence of NEC.

Performance analysis of a distributed power control algorithm for shared and split spectrum femtocell networks

In this paper, we study the performance of a distributed power adjustment algorithm for shared and split spectrum allocation setups. The theoretical analysis reveals that the convergence of the power control algorithm is guaranteed under different spectrum allocation schemes and the convergence rate is exponential. The performance analysis is also carried out via simulations which demonstrate the algorithm fairness under Jain＇s and Atkinkons＇ fairness indices.

研究了触变铸造、触变铸造+T6人工时效以及挤压态AA7075合金的拉伸断裂行为。采用光学显微镜和扫描电子显微镜研究了合金的显微组织和断口形貌。结果表明,挤压态和触变铸造+T6人工时效的合金具有比触变铸造合金更优越的力学性能。延长固溶时间后T6人工时效可使触变铸造AA7075合金的拉伸性能大大提高。挤压态和触变铸造+T6人工时效合金的拉伸性能相近。触变铸造合金中存在明显的微裂纹,其断裂形式为晶间脆断。而挤压态和触变铸造+T6合金的断裂形式为韧性断裂。对于触变铸造合金,破坏始于共晶基体界面之间,并在晶间扩展。微孔缩聚是触变铸造+T6人工时效合金的主要断裂模式。而微孔形核于基体与多元共晶组织的界面。

Comparison of subconjunctivally injected bevacizumab, ranibizumab, and pegaptanib for inhibition of corneal neovascularization in a rat model

AIM: To compare the efficacies of subconjunctival bevacizumab, ranibizumab, and pegaptanib sodium injections for the inhibition of corneal neovascularization in an experimental rat model. METHODs: sixteen corneas of 16 rats were chemically cauterized and randomized into four groups: bevacizumab group that treated with 0.05mL/1.25mg bevacizumab, ranibizumab group that treated with 0.05mL/0.5mg ranibizumab, pegaptanib group that treated with 0.05mL/0.15mg pegaptanib sodium, and control group that treated with 0.05mL saline solution. Digital photographs of the corneas were taken and analyzed using an image analysis software program. All corneas were excised and examined histologically on the 15 th day. REsULTs: Each treatment group had significantly less neovascularized corneal areas and fewer blood vessels than the control group (all P significantly less neovascu-larized corneal areas and fewer blood vessels than ranibizumab and pegaptanib groups (both P s no significant difference between the ranibizumab and pegaptanib groups regarding percentage of neovascularized corneal areas and number of blood vessels (both P >0.05). CONCLUsION: subconjunctival bevacizumab, ranibiz-umab, and pegaptanib sodium were effective with no corneal epitheliopathy for inhibiting corneal neovascularization after corneal burn in rats .Bevacizumab was more effective than ranibizumab and pegaptanib sodium.

Anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) inhibitors are effective in the treatment of various inflammatory rheumatic conditions. Increased risks of serious infections are the major issues concerning the long-term safety of these agents. We present a case of a young male Behcet’s patient whose disease was complicated by cytomegalovirus (CMV) colitis. Colitis started 10 d after the third Infliximab dose and responded to the cessation of TNF blocking treatment and administration of ganciclovir. Tumor necrosis factor alpha and interferon gamma act at several levels in combating viral infections.CMV infections should be kept in mind and included in the differential diagnosis of severe gastrointestinal symptoms in patients receiving anti-TNF agents.

1 Introduction Nigella sativa, known as black seed, has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer effects. It has been shown to reduce the development of kidney failure when given prior to the use of nephrotoxic drugs particularly due to its antioxidant action. However, as far as the authors could ascertain, there is no human study in literature showing these effects. Here we present a case of acute renal failure after the use of N. sativa, rather than exhibiting antioxidant or antidiabetic effects.
