A review of control strategies used for morphing aircraft applications

This paper reviews the various control algorithms and strategies used for fixed-wing morphing aircraft applications. It is evident from the literature that the development of control algorithms for morphing aircraft technologies focused on three main areas. The first area is related to precise control of the shape of morphing concepts for various flight conditions. The second area is mainly related to the flight dynamics, stability, and control aspects of morphing aircraft. The third area deals mainly with aeroelastic control using morphing concepts either for load alleviation purposes and/or to control the instability boundaries. The design of controllers for morphing aircraft/wings is very challenging due to the large changes that can occur in the structural, aerodynamic, and inertial characteristics. In addition, the type of actuation system and actuation rate/speed can have a significant effect on the design of such controllers. The aerospace community is in strong need of such a critical review especially as morphing aircraft technologies move from fundamental research at a low Technology Readiness Level(TRL) to real-life applications. This critical review aims to identify research gaps and propose future directions. In this paper, research activities/papers are categorized according to the control strategy used. This ranges from simple Proportional Integral Derivative(PID) controllers at one end to complex robust adaptive controllers and deep learning algorithms at the other end. This includes analytical, computational, and experimental studies. In addition, the various dynamic models used and their fidelities are highlighted and discussed.

A Primal-dual Interior-point Algorithm for symmetric Cone Convex Quadratic Programming Based on the Commutative Class Directions

In this paper, we present a neighborhood following primal-dual interior-point algorithm for solving symmetric cone convex quadratic programming problems, where the objective function is a convex quadratic function and the feasible set is the intersection of an affine subspace and a symmetric cone attached to a Euclidean Jordan algebra. The algorithm is based on the [13] broad class of commutative search directions for cone of semidefinite matrices, extended by [18] to arbitrary symmetric cones. Despite the fact that the neighborhood is wider, which allows the iterates move towards optimality with longer steps, the complexity iteration bound remains as the same result of schmieta and Alizadeh for symmetric cone optimization problems.

An investigation of reaction furnace temperatures and sulfur recovery

In a modern day sulfur recovery unit(sRU),hydrogen sulfide(H_(2)s)is converted to elemental sulfur using a modified Claus unit.A process simulator called TsWEET has been used to consider the Claus process.The effect of the H_(2)s concentration,the H_(2)s/CO_(2) ratio,the input airﬂow rate,the acid gasﬂow of the acid gas(AG)splitter and the temperature of the acid gas feed at three different oxygen concentrations(in the air input)on the main burner temperature have been studied.Also the effects of the tail gas ratio and the catalytic bed type on the sulfur recovery were studied.The bed temperatures were optimized in order to enhance the sulfur recovery for a given acid gas feed and air input.Initially when the fraction of AG splitterﬂow to the main burner was increased,the temperature of the main burner increased to a maximum but then decreased sharply when theﬂow fraction was further increased;this was true for all three concentrations of oxygen.However,if three other parameters(the concentration of H_(2)s,the ratio H_(2)s/CO_(2) and theﬂow rate of air)were increased,the temperature of the main burner increased monotonically.This increase had differ-ent slopes depending on the oxygen concentration in the input air.But,by increasing the temperature of the acid gas feed,the temperature of the main burner decreased.In general,the concentration of oxygen in the input air into the Claus unit had little effect on the temperature of the main burner(This is true for all parameters).The optimal catalytic bed temperature,tail gas ratio and type of catalytic bed were also determined and these conditions are a minimum temperature of 300°C,a ratio of 2.0 and a hydrolysing Claus bed.

Analysis of the COVID-19, Outbreak in Brazil Using Topological Weighted Centroid: An Intelligent Geographic Information system Approach

This study used Topological Weighted Centroid (TWC) to analyze the Coronavirus outbreak in Brazil. This analysis only uses latitude and longitude in formation of the capitals with the confirmed cases on May 24, 2020 to illustrate the usefulness of TWC though any date could have been used. There are three types of TWC analyses, each type having five associated algorithms that produce fifteen maps, TWC-Original, TWC-Frequency and TWC-Windowing. We focus on TWC-Original to illustrate our approach. The TWC method without using the transportation information predicts the network for COVID-19 outbreak that matches very well with the main radial transportation routes network in Brazil.

The effect of celastrol in combination with 5-fluorouracil on proliferation and apoptosis of gastric cancer cell lines

Background:Despite the availability of chemotherapy drugs such as 5-ﬂuorouracil(5-FU),the treatment of some cancers such as gastric cancer remains challenging due to drug resistance and side effects.This study aimed to investigate the effect of celastrol in combination with the chemotherapy drug 5-FU on proliferation and induction of apoptosis in human gastric cancer cell lines(AGs and EPG85-257).Materials and Methods:In this in vitro study,AGs and EPG85-257 cells were treated with different concentrations of celastrol,5-FU,and their combination.Cell proliferation was assessed using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide(MTT)assay.The synergistic effect of 5-FU and celastrol was studied using Compusyn software.The DNA content at different phases of the cell cycle and apoptosis rate was measured usingﬂow cytometry.Results:Co-treatment with low concentrations(10%inhibitory concentration(IC10))of celastrol and 5-FU signiﬁcantly reduced IC50(pso that 48 h after treatment,IC50 was calculated at 3.77 and 6.9μM for celastrol,20.7 and 11.6μM for 5-FU,and 5.03 and 4.57μM for their combination for AGs and EPG85-257 cells,respectively.The mean percentage of apoptosis for AGs cells treated with celastrol,5-FU,and their combination was obtained 23.9,41.2,and 61.9,and for EPG85-257 cells 5.65,46.9,and 55.7,respectively.In addition,the 5-FU and celastrol-5-FU combination induced cell cycle arrest in the synthesis phase.Conclusions:Although celastrol could decrease the concentration of 5-ﬂuorouracil that sufﬁced to suppress gastric cancer cells,additional studies are required to arrive at conclusive evidence on the anticancer effects of celastrol.

soft actuators have garnered substantial attention in current years in view of their potential appliances in diverse domains like robotics,biomedical devices,and biomimetic systems.These actuators mimic the natural movements of living organisms,aiming to attain enhanced flexibility,adaptability,and versatility.On the other hand,angle-independent structural color has been achieved through innovative design strategies and engineering approaches.By carefully controlling the size,shape,and arrangement of nanostructures,researchers have been able to create materials exhibiting consistent colors regardless of the viewing angle.One promising class of materials that holds great potential for bioinspired soft actuators is MXenes in view of their exceptional mechanical,electrical,and optical properties.The integration of MXenes for bioinspired soft actuators with angle-independent structural color offers exciting possibilities.Overcoming material compatibility issues,improving color reproducibility,scalability,durability,power supply efficiency,and cost-effectiveness will play vital roles in advancing these technologies.This perspective appraises the development of bioinspired MXene-centered soft actuators with angleindependent structural color in soft robotics.

Effect of Eu3+,Bi3+,and Li+ doping on luminescent property of GdNbO4

We investigated the emission properties of Eu3+-doped GdNbO4-based oxide phosphors,aiming at improving the Eu3+emission by codoping of Bi3+and Li+.Eu3+singly doped,Eu3+and Bi3+doubly doped,and Eu3+,Bi3+,and Li+triply doped GdNbO4were prepared using a high-temperature solid-state reaction method.The red-orange emissions from Eu3+in the singly doped samples are significantly improved by the codoping of Bi3+,mainly due to the energy transfer from Bi3+to Eu3+.The additional codoping of Li+is found to increase the Eu3+emission significantly.This improvement might be attributed to the increase in the photoluminescent quantum yield originating from larger grain sizes and better crystallinity.A detailed analysis of the X-ray diffraction pattern and the asymmetric ratio estimated from the photoluminescence spectra show that the local lattice environment around Eu3+in GdNbO4does not change significantly with the codoping of Bi3+and Li+.Our results indicate that Li+doping is a promising way to improve the emission properties of rare-earth ion-doped GdNbO4phosphors.

Tribological behavior of lubricant-impregnated porous polyimide

Porous materials impregnated with lubricants can be used in conditions where limited lubricant is desirable.In this work,three porous polyimides(PPI)with different densities were prepared.Polyalphaolefin(PAO)impregnated PPI(iPPI)discs were rubbed against steel and sapphire balls.In operando observations of the iPPI-sapphire contacts show that oil is released under an applied load,forming a meniscus around contacts.Cavitation at the outlet is created at high sliding speeds.The amount of released oil increases with increasing PPI porosity.Contact moduli,E*,estimated based on the actual contact size show that trapped oil in iPPIs contributes to load support.At higher speeds,tribological rehydration of the contact occurs in low density iPPI,with that E*rises with speed.For high density PPIs,high speeds give a constantly high E*which is limited by the viscoelastic properties of the PPI network and possibly the rate of oil exudation.Friction of iPPI-steel contacts is governed by the mechanical properties of the PPI,the flow of the lubricant,and the roughness of the PPI surfaces.For low-and medium-density(highly porous,high roughness)PPIs,large amount of oil is released,and lubrication is mainly via lubricant restricted in the contact in the pores and possibly tribological rehydration.For high density(low porosity)PPI,with lower roughness,hydrodynamic lubrication is achieved which gives the lowest friction.Our results show that polymeric porous materials for effective lubrication require the optimization of its surface roughness,stiffness,oil flow,and oil retentions.

Highly specific interactions between biomolecules,such as antigen-antibody,protein-ligand,or nucleic acid base pair complementary are on the basis of the organization of complex organisms.The same principles may be tentatively used in molecular medicine for diagnosis and therapeutics.A molecule can be designed to selectively bind a protease and thereby inhibit the production of a peptide that forms toxic aggregates in the brain or an antibody may be produced to bind specifically to that peptide for detection or clearance purposes.Unfortunately,interference in biological systems is not that simple.For a start there is the inhibition of the physiological role of the protease;moreover,several cleavage fragments may be produced,which may continue to diverge due to putative post-translational modification and self-assembly processes,hiding the toxic target in a“soup”of peptide species varying in size,structure and chemical composition.A perspective of the current status and challenges in targeting peptide species for diagnosis and treatment in the context of Alzheimer’s disease is given.
