In the urban res.dential building s.ock, a major proportion is.cons.ituted by low-ris. individual buildings. In addition to cos., quality and duration, energy cons.med for the project needs.to be accounted in the decis.on making proces.. Minimizing the cos. of cons.ruction without compromis.ng on the architectural and s.ructural requirements.is.the primary objective of the res.dential buildings.of s.ake-holders. es.ecially the owners. The choice of s.ructural s.s.em and the materials.us.d for cons.ruction play a crucial role in this.effort. This.means.that the us. of expens.ve and/or voluminous.materials.s.ch as.cement, s.eel, mas.nry etc. is.optimized. This.could lead to s.gnificant reduction in embodied energy as.well, if the choice of the s.ructural s.s.em is.prudently made. In this.paper, an attempt has.been made to quantify the cos. and embodied energy benefits.for a low-ris. res.dential building by choos.ng two different s.ructural s.s.ems. namely moment res.s.ing framed (MRF) cons.ruction s.s.em and the partly load-bearing (PLB) s.s.em. The influence of choice of materials. contributing to reduction of cos. and/or energy is.dis.us.ed. It is.clearly noticed that, when the s.ructural s.s.em is.re-configured as.a PLB s.s.em from the exis.ing MRF s.s.em there is.s.gnificant reduction in cos. and embodied energy without changing the architectural form.

It is.well-known that a product or a s.s.em is.s.s.ainable if it is.economically viable, s.cially acceptable and environmentally friendly. Load bearing mas.nry is.one s.ch example which is.quite s.s.ainable, es.ecially if the mas.nry units.are locally available. It is.important to quantify the environmental benefits.and cos., if an alternative to an exis.ing technology is.to be s.gges.ed. Of cours. the is.ues.related to acceptance have to be dis.us.ed and addres.ed. This.paper pres.nts.the quantification of embodied energy and cos. of lime-pozzolana-cement (LPC) geopolymer bas.d mas.nry units.made us.ng locally available bulk ingredients.viz. tank-bed s.il (TBs. and brick-powder (BP). The mas.nry adobe units.developed have achieved the target performance in terms.of s.rength, low water abs.rption and relative eas. of production. s.multaneous.y the is.ues.related to cos. are als. dis.us.ed in this.paper. The s.udies.have revealed that the bulk contributor to embodied energy and cos. of geopolymer adobes.are the alkaline materials.viz s.dium hydroxide and s.dium s.licate. However, the embodied energy and cos. per unit s.rength appears.to be better than that of conventional table moulded bricks.in s.uth India, es.ecially when alkaline s.lution at 2M concentration is.us.d with LPC.

The hot deformation behavior of as.cas. ZE41A magnes.um alloy was.s.udied by employing both proces.ing maps.and micros.ructural obs.rvations. To obtain proces.ing map, hot compres.ion tes.s.were performed over a range of s.rain rates.(0.001-1.0 s.1) and temperatures.(250-450 ℃). Power dis.ipation efficiency (η) and ins.ability parameter [ξ (ε)] were evaluated and proces.ing maps.were developed for the s.rain of 0.5. The dynamic recrys.allization (DRX) and ins.able zones.were identified and validated through micrographs. The proces.ing maps.can be us.d to s.lect optimum s.rain rates.and temperatures.for effective hot working of the material.

AIM： To inves.igate if cis.latin alters.vitamin s.atus.and if VR modulates.cis.latin induced intes.inal apoptos.s.and oxidative s.res. in Wis.ar/NIN （WNIN） male rats.METHODs. Weanling, WNIN male rats.（n = 12 per group） received adlibitum for 17 wk： control diet （20% protein） or the s.me with 50% vitamin res.riction. They were then s.b-divided into two groups.of s.x rats.each and adminis.ered cis.latin （2.61 mg/kg bodyweight） once a week for three wk or PBs.（vehicle control）. Intes.inal epithelial cell （IEC） apoptos.s.was.monitored by morphometry, Annexin-V binding, M30 cytodeath as.ay and DNA fragmentation. s.ructural and functional integrity of the villus.were as.es.ed by villus.height / crypt depth ratio and activities.of alkaline phos.hatas., lys. ala-dipeptidyl amino-peptidas., res.ectively. To as.es. the probable mechanis.（s. of altered apoptos.s. oxidative s.res. parameters. cas.as.-3 activity, and expres.ion of Bcl-2 and Bax were determined.REs.LTs. Cis.latin per s. decreas.d plas.a vitamin levels.and they were the lowes. in VR animals.treated with cis.latin. As.expected VR increas.d only villus.apoptos.s. whereas.cis.latin increas.d s.em cell apoptos.s.in the crypt. However, cis.latin treatment of VR rats.increas.d apoptos.s.both in villus.and crypt regions.and was.as.ociated with higher levels.of TBARs. protein carbonyls.and cas.as.-3 activity, but lower Gs. concentrations. VR induced decreas. in Bcl-2 expres.ion was.further lowered by cis.latin. Bax expres.ion, unaffected by VR was.increas.d on cis.latin treatment. Mucos.l functional integrity was.s.verely compromis.d in cis.latin treated VR-rats.CONCLUs.ON： Low intake of vitamins.increas.s.the s.ns.tivity of rats.to cis.latin and promotes.intes.inal epithelial cell apoptos.s.

Abundant epidemiological evidences.s.gges. that cons.mption of food rich in antioxi-dants.(non-nutritional components. can prevent degenerative dis.as.s. A total of 26 commonly cons.med nuts. oil s.eds. edible oils. milk and milk products.were chos.n for the s.udy. Cons.dering the fact that antioxidant content (AOC) and phenolic contents.(PC) of thes. foods.was.not es.ablis.ed s.s.ematically in Indian context. Therefore, we have as.es.ed and correlated the AOC and PC, an important antioxidant cons.ituents.of plant foods. AOC was.as.es.ed by DPPH (2, 2-Diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl) s.avenging activity and FRAP (Ferric reducing antioxidant power) methods.and phenolic content (PC), us.ng Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. Among the nuts.and oil s.eds.arecanut had the highes. phenolic and antioxidant content 10841, 4220341 mg/100g res.ectively. In milk, edible oils.and s.gars.the values.ranged from 336 -11674 mg/100g. Jaggery had the highes. PC and AOC among the foods.s.udied . Although AOC and PC s.owed wide variation among the foods. AOC was.correlated s.gnificantly with PC. Indeed the ‘r’ value between PC and AOC (DPPH and FRAP) was.0.99 (p s.and oil s.eds. while in milk, milk products.and s.gars. the “r” values.ranged from 0.93 and 0.99 (p s.ectively. The overall res.lts.indicate that the phenolic compounds.may be s.gnificant contributors.to the AOC of the foods.s.udied.
