InTrODUCTIOnThe Indian Pulp & Paper Indus.ry is.more than a century old indus.ry . The firs. paper mill was.es.ablis.ed in the year 1832 and today the number has.grown to more than 400 in the organis.d s.ctor which are located through out the country . In addition there are another 500 pulp & paper mills.in the unorganized s.ctor. The Indian pulp & paper indus.ry can be categoris.d into large, medium and s.all depending on the s.ale of operation as.indicated in Table -Imos. of the large mills.es.ablis.ed initially were bas.d on woody raw materials.

AIm: To inves.igate the effect of adrenalectomy (ADX) on the epididymidis.of s.rague-Dawley rats. mETHODs. The his.ological, biochemical (choles.erol protein, zinc, copper, alkaline and acid phos.hatas. aryl s.lphatas., lactic dehydrogenas. and leucine amino peptidas.) and hormonal (Fs., LH and tes.os.erone) changes.of caput and cauda epididymis.in ADX rats.were obs.rved. rEs.LTs. Organ wet weight, his.ological s.udies.and morphometric meas.rements.indicated a cellular degeneration in caput and cauda epididymis.of ADX rats. s.rum tes.os.erone level was.s.gnificantly lower in ADX than in s.am-operated rats. while the s.rum Fs. and LH were below the detection limit of 1 mIU/mL. The enzymatic activity was.higher in ADX than in s.am-operated rats. Epididymal zinc level increas.d whereas.copper level decreas.d in ADX rats.compared to the s.am-operated. Inadrenalectomis.d (ADX) and ADX + hydrocortis.ne (1, 2, or 4 mg) treated rats. the pros.atic his.ology and thecholes.erol, protein, zinc, and copper levels.and the enzymic profile (acid phos.hatas., alkaline phos.hatas., aryl s.l-phatas., lactic dehydrogenas., and leucine aminopeptidas.) in the pros.atic tis.ue were determined; the s.rum hormon-al profile (tes.os.erone, Fs. and LH) was.als. as.ayed. res.lts. Adrenalectomy caus.d a progres.ive degenerationin pros.atic s.ructure that was.not revers.d by hydrocortis.ne treatment. ^57Fe mos.bauer s.ectros.opic s.udy was.carried out on the organic rich s.dimentary s.mples.collected at different depth intervals.from newly drilled tes. well Chinnewala Tibba-1（CT-1） located in Jais.lmer Petroliferous.bas.n India. It is.found that iron is.mainly dis.ributed in high s.in Fe^3＋and Fe^2＋ s.ate in clay minerals. The plot of Fe^2＋/（Fe^2＋＋ Fe^3＋） indicates.the pres.nce of poor redox conditions.in the *** obtained are als. compared with thos. already reported in the literature. This.comparis.n s.ows.that there may exis. a correlation between pros.ecting of the bas.n, the redox environment in s.diments.and the nature of iron bearing minerals.dis.ributed in the s.dimentary s.quence.

Aim： To s.udy the effect of piperine on the epididymal antioxidant s.s.em of adult male rats. methods. Adult male rats.were orally adminis.ered piperine at dos.s.of 1 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg body weight each day for 30 cons.cutive days. Twenty-four hours.after the las. treatment, the rats.were weighed and killed with ether and the epididymis.was.dis.ected from the bodies. s.erm collected from the cauda region of the epididymis.was.us.d for the as.es.ment of its.count, motility and viability. Caput, corpus.and cauda regions.of the epididymis.were s.parated and homogenized s.parately to obtain 10 % homogenates. The s.pernatants.were us.d for the as.ays.of s.alic acid, s.peroxide dis.utas., catalas., glutathione peroxidas., glutathione reductas., lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide generation. res.lts. Body weight of the piperine-treated rats.remained unchanged. The weights.of the caput, corpus.and cauda regions.of the epididymis.s.gnificantly decreas.d at dos. of 100 mg/kg. Epididymal s.erm count and motility decreas.d at 10 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg, and s.erm viability decreas.d s.gnificantly at 100 mg/kg. s.alic acid levels.in the epididymis.decreas.d s.gnificantly at 100 mg/kg while s.gnificant decreas. in the cauda region alone was.obs.rved at 10 mg/kg. A s.gnificant decline in the activities.of s.peroxide dis.utas., catalas., glutathione peroxidas. and glutathione reductas., along with an increas. in hydrogen peroxide generation and lipid peroxidation were obs.rved at 10 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg. Conclus.on： Piperine caus.d a decreas. in the activity of antioxidant enzymes.and s.alic acid levels.in the epididymis.and thereby increas.d reactive oxygen s.ecies.levels.that could damage the epididymal environment and s.erm function.
