A nonlinear optical s.ngle crys.al of potas.ium pentaborate tetrahydrate （KB5O8·4H2O） has.been grown from aqueous.s.lution by us.ng unidirectional crys.al growth method of s.nkaranarayanan-Ramas.my （s.） with a due modification in the growth as.embly. Potas.ium pentaborate crys.al of 60 mm length and 10 mm diameter has.been grown along （100） plane with a growth rate of 3 mm per day within a period of 20 days. The grown crys.al was.s.bjected to s.ngle crys.al X-ray diffraction analys.s.to confirm that the crys.al belongs.to the orthorhombic s.s.em. s.me fundamental data s.ch as.valance electron plas.a energy, Penn gap, Fermi energy and electronic polarizability of the grown crys.al were calculated. The pres.nce of borate in the grown crys.al was.confirmed by Fourier trans.orm infrared （FTIR） s.ectros.opy. The optical trans.is.ion property of the grown crys.al was.analyzed us.ng ultra violet （UV） vis.ble s.ectral analys.s. s.rface morphology of the growth plane was.obs.rved us.ng s.anning electron micros.opy （s.M）. The mechanical s.rength of the crys.als.was.found out us.ng Vickers.microhardnes. tes. along the growth axis. Frequency dependent dielectric cons.ant of the grown crys.al was.s.udied for various.temperatures.along （100） plane.

A s.ngle-mode las.r is.demons.rated us.ng a newly developed double-clad thulium-ytterbium-doped fiber （TYDF） in a linear cavity formed by two fiber Bragg gratings.（FBGs.. The YTF us.d is.drawn from a D-s.ape preform fabricated us.ng the modified chemical vapor depos.tion and s.lution doping technique. The las.r is.operated at 1 901.6 nm via the trans.tion of thulium ions.from 3F4 to 3H6 with the as.is.ance of ytterbium to thulium ion energy trans.er. The efficiencies.of the las.r are 0.71% and 0.75% at 927- and 905-nm multimode pumping, res.ectively. The thres.olds.of the launched pump power for 927- and 905-nm pumping are 1 314 and 1 458 mW, res.ectively. A 7-mW output is.obtained at a 905-nm pump power of 2 400 mW.
