Physics design of 14 MeV neutron generator facility at the Institute for Plasma Research

A high energy and high yield neutron source is a prime requirement for technological studies related to fusion reactor development. It provides a high-energy neutron environment for small-scale fusion reactor components research and testing such as tritium breeding, shielding, plasmafacing materials, reaction cross-section data study for fusion materials, etc. Along with ITER participation, the Institute of Plasma Research, India is developing an accelerator-based 14 MeV neutron source with a yield of 10^(12)n s^(-1). The design of the source is based on the deuterium–tritium fusion reaction. The deuterium beam is accelerated and delivered to the tritium target to generate 14 MeV neutrons. The deuterium beam energy and tritium availability in the tritium target are the base parameters of the accelerator-based neutron source design. The paper gives the physics design of the neutron generator facility of the Institute for Plasma Research. It covers the requirements, design basis, and physics parameters of the neutron generator. As per the analytical results generator can produce more than 1 × 10^(12)n s^(-1)with a 110 keV D^(+) ion beam of 10 mA and a minimum 5 Ci tritium target. However, the detailed simulation with the more realistic conditions of deuteron ion interaction with the tritium titanium target shows that the desired results cannot be achieved with 110 keV. The safe limit of the ion energy should be 300 keV as per the simulation. At 300 keV ion energy and 20 mA current, it reaches 1.6 × 10^(12)n s^(-1). Moreover, it was found that to ensure sufficiently long operation time a tritium target of more than 20 Ci should be used. The scope of the neutron source is not limited to the fusion reactor research studies, it is extended to other areas such as medical radioisotopes research, semiconductor devices irradiations, and many more.

A shield module is associated with an Indian Test Blanket Module (TBM) in ITER to limit the radiation doses in port inter-space *** shield module is made of stainless steel plates and water *** is identified as an important component for radiation protection because of its radiation exposure control *** radiation protection classification leads to more assurance of the component *** order to validate and verify the design of the shield module,a neutronic laboratory-scale experiment is designed and *** experiment is planned by considering the irradiation under a neutron source of 14 MeV and yields of 1010 n *** reference neutron spectrum of the ITER TBM shield module has been achieved through optimization of the neutron source spectrum by a combination of steel and lead *** neutron spectrum and flux are measured using a multiple foil activation technique and neutron dose-rate meter LB 6411 (He-3 proton recoil counter with polyethylene),*** neutronic design simulation is assessed using MCNP5 and FENDL 2.1 crosssection *** paper covers neutronic design,irradiation and the outcome of the experiment in detail.

Experimental studies on the self-shielding Effect in Fissile Fuel Breeding Measurement in Thorium Oxide Pellets Irradiated with 14 MeV Neutrons

The 14 MeV neutrons produced in the D-T fusion reactions have the potential of breeding Uranium-233 fissile fuel from fertile material Thorium-232. In order to estimate the amount of U-233 produced, experiments are carried out by irradiating thorium dioxide pellets with neutrons produced from a 14 MeV neutron generator. The objective of the present work is to measure the reaction rates of 232Th ＋ in --＊ 233Th --＊ 2a^Pa --＊ 2a3U in different pellet thicknesses to study the self-shielding effects and adopt a procedure for correction. An appropriate assembly consisting of high-density polyethylene is designed and fabricated to slow down the high-energy neutrons, in which Thorium pellets are irradiated. The amount of fissile fuel （~3~U） produced is estimated by measuring the 312 keV gammas emitted by Protactinium-233 （half-life of 27 days）. A calibrated High Purity Germanium （HPGe） detector is used to measure the gamma ray spectrum. The amount of 233U produced by Th232 （n, ~） is calculated using MCNP code. The self-shielding effect is evaluated by calculating the reaction rates for different foil thickness. MCNP calculation results are compared with the experimental values and appropriate correction factors are estimated for self-shielding of neutrons and absorption of gamma rays.

A general protocol has been developed for the facile construction of titled derivatives via three component reaction between 3-substituted phenyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carbaldehyde, malononitrile and various Michael donors in presence of 5 mol% polystyrene supported 7-methyl-1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene（Ps-TBD）. Ps-TBD was reused for at least five runs with nearly constant catalytic activity. All compounds were screened for antimicrobial and antioxidant activities.

Impact of clinical posting in psychiatry on the attitudes towards psychiatry and mental illness in undergraduate medical students

Background A major public health problem around the world today is mental illness. Although there are several studies on the topic, it is rarely conducted in the context like the current study. Aims This study aims to find out the attitudes of medical students towards psychiatry and mental illness as a clinical medicine major and evaluate the effects of clinical posting on their attitudes towards psychiatry and mental illness. Methods This is a longitudinal study of 6 months* duration conducted with students in their fifth semester of medical college in Western India during the academic year of 2016-2017. The participants were assessed by pro forma containing demographic details, and the questionnaires—Attitude Towards Psychiatry-30 items (ATP-30) scale and Mental Illness Clinician's Attitude (MICA) scale, which were presented to the students at the beginning and at the end of their psychiatry clinical posting. The statistical analysis was done with GraphPad, Instat V.3.06. A p value s considered statistically significant. Results The students' attitudes towards psychiatry were neutral at the beginning of the psychiatry clinical posting, and improved significantly at the end of the posting on both scales: ATP-30 (p=0.002) and MICA (p=0.048). The students became more positive towards the subject and mental illness in general, negative attitudes also reduced but the change was not statistically significant (p=0.058). We found significant improvement in students' thinking towards being a psychiatrist in the future post-term (p=0.0002). The changes in attitude in terms of gender were equivocal, with an increase in positive attitude and reduction in negative attitude post-term in both sexes. Conclusion Psychiatry clinical posting aids in cultivating positive attitude towards psychiatry and mental illness and reduces the stigma associated with the students of this major and psychiatric patients.

We describe a simple one-pot thermal decomposition method for the production of a stable colloidal suspension of narrowly dispersed superparamagnetic Fe_(3)O_(4)-Ag core-shell *** biocompatible nanostructures are highly toxic to *** activity studies were carried out on both Gram negative(Escherichia coli and Proteus vulgaris)and Gram positive(Bacillus megaterium and staphylococcus aureus)bacterial *** have been made to understand the underlying molecular mechanism of such antibacterial *** effect of the core-shell nanostructures on Gram negative strains was found to be better than that observed for silver *** minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)values of these nanostructures were found to be considerably lower than those of commercially available *** attribute this enhanced antibacterial effect of the nanostructures to their stability as a colloid in the medium,which modulates the phosphotyrosine profile of the bacterial proteins and arrests bacterial *** also demonstrate that these core-shell nanostructures can be removed from the medium by means of an external magnetic field which provides a mechanism to prevent uncontrolled waste disposal of these potentially hazardous nanostructures.

A Distributed Model for Real-Time Flood Forecasting in the Godavari Basin Using space Inputs

Hydrological modelling of large river catchments has become a challenging task for water resources engineers due to its complexity in collecting and handling of both spatial and non-spatial data such as rainfall,gauge-discharge data,and topographic and hydraulic *** this article,a flood forecast model is developed for the Godavari Basin,India through a distributed modelling approach using space *** approach includes rainfall runoff modelling,hydrodynamic flow routing,calibration,and validation of the model with field discharge *** study basin is divided into 128 subbasins to improve the model *** and hydraulic parameters of each subbasin and channel are computed using the land use/land cover grid that is derived from the Indian Remote sensing satellite(IRs–P6) AWi Fs sensor data(56 m resolution),shuttled Radar Topographic Mission(sRTM) Digital Elevation Model(DEM),and the soil textural *** model is calibrated using the field hydrometeorological data of 2000 and validated with the data of *** model was tested during the 2010 floods with real-time 3-hour interval hydrometeorological and daily evapotranspiration *** in estimating the peak flood discharge and lag time was found to be very *** forecast lead time is increased by 12 hours compared to conventional methods of forecasting.

Burden of care in caregivers of patients with alcohol use disorder and schizophrenia and its association with anxiety, depression and quality of life

Background Caregivers play a pivotal role in providing care for mentally ill *** in caregiver burden can make them vulnerable to mental illness *** We assessed the severity of burden of care and its association with depression,anxiety and quality of life among caregivers of patients with alcohol use disorder(AUD)and *** This was an observational,cross-sectional,single-centred study of 50 consecutive caregivers of patients with AUD and *** were recruited from the psychiatry outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital between January and June *** caregivers were further assessed by demographic details,Hospital Anxiety Depression scale for assessment of depression and anxiety,Zarit Burden Interview for assessment of caregiver burden and WHO Quality Of Life-BREF for assessment of quality of *** data were analysed using GraphPad Instat V.3.06(California).Multiple linear regression analysis was applied to identify the predictors of caregiver *** Burden of care experienced by caregivers of patients with AUD is as high as that of caregivers of patients with schizophrenia(U=1142.5,p=0.46).Caregivers experiencing high burden of care are likely to have symptoms of anxiety(U=22,pssion(U=32,ps are likely to experience higher burden of care(U=819.5,p=0.006).For caregivers of patients with schizophrenia,anxiety,environmental health,socioeconomic status and patients,occupation can predict burden of care,while for caregivers of patients with AUD,depression and environmental health can predict burden of *** Our study suggests that caregivers of patients with AUD experience burden of care as high as that of caregivers of patients with *** with high burden of care are more likely to have depression,anxiety and poor quality of *** registration number CTRI/2017/03/008224.

Innovation is managed through the development of processes and routines, considered as critical for business success and value creation. The identification of relevant routines as well as the understanding of which factors affect business innovation is the main objective of this research, based on a survey applied in Portuguese companies and their experience shared in best practices guides. Conclusions highlighted 10 key innovation routines, reinforcing the idea that innovation must be supported through a systematic and sustained management process. Results also indicate that sMEs face greater difficulties in benefiting from the potential of innovation practices and collaboration may present opportunities to overcome their limited resources. Therefore, regardless of size, business activity, science and technology intensity or other factors influencing firms dynamic capabilities, innovation should be considered as a management imperative as it can influence not only the present but also the future of business success.
