A survey of Image synthesis and Editing with Generative Adversarial Networks

This paper presents a survey of image synthesis and editing with Generative Adversarial Networks（GANs）. GANs consist of two deep networks, a generator and a discriminator, which are trained in a competitive way. A high-order full-discretization method using Hermite interpolation for periodic time-delayed differential equations

A high-order full-discretization method （FDM） using Hermite interpolation （HFDM） is proposed and implemented for periodic systems with time delay. Both Lagrange interpolation and Hermite interpolation are used to approximate state values and delayed state values in each discretization step. The transition matrix over a single period is determined and used for stability analysis. The proposed method increases the approximation order of the semidiscretization method and the FDM without increasing the computational time. The convergence, precision, and efficiency of the proposed method are investigated using several Mathieu equations and a complex turning model as examples. Comparison shows that the proposed HFDM converges faster and uses less computational time than existing methods.

Quasi-variable Discount Rates and Market Volatility: An Empirical study

This paper proposes an assumption of quasi-variable discount rates to explain the excess volatility puzzle of stock market. Under the assumption, the ARMAX model is derived based on the CCAPM model and CRRA utility function to describe the linear relationship between the discount rate and the consumption growth rate. We conducted empirical research on this model using historical data of the Us stock market. The results confirm a significantly negative relationship between consumption growth rate and discount rate. subsequently, the results of Monte Carlo simulation show that given the risk preference coefficient and dividend sequence, the rational expectations price fluctuation obtained under the assumption of quasivariable discount rate is the largest.

High-sensitivity nanophotonic sensors with passive trapping of analyte molecules in hot spots

Nanophotonic resonators can confine light to deep-subwavelength volumes with highly enhanced near-field intensity and therefore are widely used for surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy in various molecular sensing *** enhanced signal is mainly contributed by molecules in photonic hot spots,which are regions of a nanophotonic structure with high-field ***,delivery of the majority of,if not all,analyte molecules to hot spots is crucial for fully utilizing the sensing capability of an optical ***,for most optical sensors,simple and straightforward methods of introducing an aqueous analyte to the device,such as applying droplets or spin-coating,cannot achieve targeted delivery of analyte molecules to hot ***,analyte molecules are usually distributed across the entire device surface,so the majority of the molecules do not experience enhanced field ***,we present a nanophotonic sensor design with passive molecule trapping *** an analyte solution droplet is introduced to the sensor surface and gradually evaporates,the device structure can effectively trap most precipitated analyte molecules in its hot spots,significantly enhancing the sensor spectral response and sensitivity ***,our sensors produce a reflection change of a few percentage points in response to trace amounts of the amino-acid proline or glucose precipitate with a picogram-level mass,which is significantly less than the mass of a molecular monolayer covering the same measurement *** demonstrated strategy for designing optical sensor structures may also be applied to sensing nano-particles such as exosomes,viruses,and quantum dots.

Determination of the subcooled liquid solubilities of PAHs in partitioning batch experiments

subcooled liquid solubility is the water solubility for a hypothetical state of liquid. It is an important parameter for multicomponent nonaqueous phase liquids （NAPLs） containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs）, which can exist as liquids even though most of the solutes are solid in their pure form at ambient temperature. so far, subcooled liquid solubilities were estimated from the solid water solubility and fugacity ratio of the solid and （subcooled） liquid phase, but rarely derived from experi- mental data. In our study, partitioning batch experiments were performed to determine the subcooled liquid solubility of PAHs in NAPL-water system. For selected PAH, a series of batch experiments were carried out at increased mole fractions of the target component in the NAPL and at a constant NAPL/ water volume ratio. The equilibrium aqueous PAH concentrations were measured with HPLC and/or GC- Ms. The suhcooled liquid solubility was derived by extrapolation of the experimental equilibrium aqueous concentration to a mole fraction of unity. With the derived subcooled liquid solubility, the fugacity ratio and enthalpy of fusion of the solute were also estimated. Our results show a good agreement between the experimentally determined and published data.

Dendrites are specialized neuronal compartments that sense, integrate and transfer information in the neural network. Their development is tightly controlled and abnormal dendrite morphogenesis is strongly linked to neurological disorders. While dendritic morphology ranges from relatively simple to extremely complex for a specified neuron, either requires a functional secretory pathway to continually replenish proteins and lipids to meet dendritic growth demands. The Golgi apparatus occupies the center of the secretory pathway and is regulating posttranslational modifications, sorting, transport, and signal transduction, as well as acting as a non-centrosomal microtubule organization center. The neuronal Golgi apparatus shares common features with Golgi in other eukaryotic cell types but also forms distinct structures known as Golgi outposts that specifically localize in dendrites. However, the organization and function of Golgi in dendrite development and its impact on neurological disorders is just emerging and so far lacks a systematic summary. We describe the organization of the Golgi apparatus in neurons, review the current understanding of Golgi function in dendritic morphogenesis, and discuss the current challenges and future directions.

Cross-depiction problem: Recognition and synthesis of photographs and artwork

Cross-depiction is the recognition—and synthesis—of objects whether they are photographed,painted, drawn, etc. It is a significant yet underresearched problem. Emulating the remarkable human ability to recognise and depict objects in an astonishingly wide variety of depictive forms is likely to advance both the foundations and the applications of computer vision. In this paper we motivate the cross-depiction problem, explain why it is difficult, and discuss some current approaches. Our main conclusions are(i) appearance-based recognition systems tend to be over-fitted to one depiction,(ii) models that explicitly encode spatial relations between parts are more robust,and(iii) recognition and non-photorealistic synthesis are related tasks.

Effects of water management on arsenic and cadmium speciation and accumulation in an upland rice cultivar

Pot and field experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of water regimes on the speciation and accumulation of arsenic（As） and cadmium（Cd） in Brazilian upland rice growing in soils polluted with both As and Cd. In the pot experiment constant and intermittent flooding treatments gave 3–16 times higher As concentrations in soil solution than did aerobic conditions but Cd showed the opposite trend. Compared to arsenate, there were more marked changes in the arsenite concentrations in the soil solution as water management shifted, and therefore arsenite concentrations dominated the As speciation and bioavailability in the soil. In the field experiment As concentrations in the rice grains increased from 0.14 to 0.21 mg/kg while Cd concentrations decreased from 0.21 to 0.02 mg/kg with increasing irrigation ranging from aerobic to constantly flooding conditions. Among the various water regimes the conventional irrigation treatment produced the highest rice grain yield of 6.29 tons/ha. The As speciation analysis reveals that the accumulation of dimethylarsinic acid（from 11.3% to 61.7%） made a greater contribution to the increase in total As in brown rice in the intermittent and constant flooding treatments compared to the intermittent-aerobic treatment. Thus, water management exerted opposite effects on Cd and As speciation and bioavailability in the soil and consequently on their accumulation in the upland rice. special care is required when irrigation regime methods are employed to mitigate the accumulation of metal（loid）s in the grain of rice grown in soils polluted with both As and Cd.
