skin is widely used as a drug delivery route due to its easy access and the possibility of using relatively painless methods for the administration of bioactive ***,the barrier properties of the skin,along with its multilayer structure,impose severe restrictions on drug transport and ***,bioengineered models aimed at emulating the skin have been developed not only for optimizing the transdermal transport of different drugs and testing the safety and toxicity of substances but also for understanding the biological processes behind skin *** though in vivo research is often preferred to study biological processes involving the skin,in vitro and ex vivo strategies have been gaining increasing relevance in recent ***,there is a noticeably increasing adoption of in vitro and ex vivo methods by internationally accepted ***,microfluidic organ-on-a-chip devices are nowadays emerging as valuable tools for functional and behavioural skin *** in miniaturization,automation and reliability still need to be addressed in order to create skin models that can predict skin behaviour in a robust,high-throughput manner,while being compliant with regulatory issues,standards and *** this review,skin models for transdermal transport,wound repair and cutaneous toxicity will be discussed with a focus on high-throughput *** microfluidic strategies driven by advancements in microfabrication technologies will also be revised as a way to improve the efficiency of existing models,both in terms of complexity and throughput.

Hepatic abscess due to perforation of the gastrointestinal tract caused by ingested foreign bodies is uncommon. Pre-operative diagnosis is difficult as patients are often unaware of the foreign body ingestion and symptoms and imagiology are usually non-specific. The authors report a case of 62-year-old woman who was admitted with fever and abdominal pain. Further investigation revealed hepatic abscess, without resolution despite antibiotic therapy. A liver abscess resulting from perforation and intra-hepatic migration of a bone coming from the pilorum was diagnosed by surgery. The literature concerning foreign body-induced perforation of the gastrointestinal tract complicated by liver abscess is reviewed.

Effects of freeze-thaw cycles on sandstone in sunny and shady slopes

A growing rock engineering activity in cold regions is facing the threat of freeze-thaw(FT)weathering,especially in high mountains where the sunny-shady slope effects strongly control the difference in weathering behavior of *** this paper,an investigation of the degradation of petrophysical characteristics of sandstone specimens subjected to FT cycle tests to simulate the sunny-shady slope effects is *** this aim,non-destructive and repeatable testing techniques including weight,ultrasonic waves,and nuclear magnetic resonance methods on standard specimens were *** the sunny slope specimens,accompanied by the enlargement of small pores,100 FT cycles caused a significant decrease in P-wave velocity with an average of 23%,but a consistent rise of 0.18%in mass loss,34%in porosity,67%in pore geometrical mean radius,and a remarkable 14.5-fold increase in ***,slight changes with some abnormal trends in physical parameters of the shady slope specimens were observed during FT cycling,which can be attributed to superficial granular disaggregation and pore throat *** shocks enhance rock weathering on sunny slopes during FT cycles,while FT weathering on shady slopes is restricted to the small pores and the superficial *** two factors are primarily responsible for the differences in FT weathering intensity between sunny and shady *** conclusions derived from the interpretation of the experimental results may provide theoretical guidance for the design of slope-failure prevention measures and the selection of transportation routes in cold mountainous regions.

Gastric cancer in a Caucasian population: Role of pepsinogen C genetic variants

AIM： To study the role of an insertion/deletion polymorphism in the pepsinogen C （PGC） gene, an effective marker for terminal differentiation of the stomach mucosa, in the susceptibility to the development of gastric lesions. METHODs： The study was performed with 99 samples of known gastric lesions and 127 samples without evidence of neoplastic disease. PCR was employed and the 6 polymorphic alleles were amplified： Allele 1 （510 bp）, Allele 2 （480 bp）, Allele 3/4 （450/460 bp）, Allele 5 （400 bp） and Allele 6 （310 bp）. REsULTs： Our results revealed that Allele 6 carriers seemed to have protection against the development of any gastric lesion （OR = 0.34; P 〈 0.001）, non-dysplastic lesions associated with gastric adenocarcinoma such as atrophy or intestinal metaplasia （OR = 0.28; P 〈 0.001） or invasive GC （OR = 0.39; P = 0.004）. CONClusION： Our study reveals that the Allele 6 carrier status has a protective role in the development of gastric lesions, probably due to its association with higher expression of PGC. Moreover, the frequency of Allele 6 carriers in the control group is far higher than that obtained in Asian populations, which might represent a genetic gap between Caucasian and Asian populations.

Using the particle-rotor model, the energy spectrum and the B（MI）/B（E2） ratio of the negative-parity yrast band in 155Tb are investigated and compared with the experimental data before and after the band-crossing. It is noted that before and after the band-crossing the moment of inertia of the core is a smooth function of the total angular momentum I and can be described by the ah formula. The yrast band of 155Tb with negative parity may be triaxially deformed （γ=-13°） before and an axially symmetric shape （γ=0°） after the band-crossing.

Morphophysiological responses of forest seedling species subjected to different water regimes

Water availability is a limiting factor for the establishment and development of forest *** understand the appropriate conditions for the initial post-transplanting phase,it is necessary to understand the specific morphophysiological characteristics of the species,such as the leaf water potential and the efficiency of photosystemⅡ.We aimed to identify the influence of different water regimes on the morphophysiological aspects of young plants of two forest species(*** Vellozo and Eucalyptus saligna sm.).Two greenhouse experiments were conducted for 28 days;one for each *** design was completely randomized,and the treatments consisted of six different water *** water potential(Ψw)and chlorophyll a fluorescence were evaluated every 7 *** the end of the experiment,morphological attributes(height,collection diameter,root volume,and dry matter)were measured and histological blades were *** water demand of *** was higher than that of *** and required greater replacement within a shorter *** rehydration fromΨw=-2 Mpa allowed for a fast recovery of the young *** plants(Ψw=-1.5,Fv/Fm=0.796),which indicated good physiological plasticity of this species when submitted to water stress at a level that is not *** total dry matter allocation was different among *** of *** presented the best responses when submitted to a continuous water supply regime,while *** seedlings presented the best response under intermittent irrigation conditions.

Biliary carcinoembryonic antigen levels in diagnosis of occult hepatic metastases from colorectal carcinoma

AIM:To prospectively explore the role of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in gallbladder bile in patients with colorectal carcinoma and the morphological and clinical features of neoplasia and the occurrence of hepatic metastases. METHODs:CEA levels in the gallbladder and peripheral blood were studied in 44 patients with colorectal carcinoma and 10 patients with uncomplicated *** samples were collected from the gallbladder bile and peripheral blood during the operation,immediately before extirpating the colorectal neoplasia or cholecystectomy. Values of up to 5 ng/ml were considered normal for bile and serum CEA. REsULTs:In the 44 patients with colorectal carcinoma who underwent operation with curative intent,the average level of serum CEA was 8.5 ng/ml (range:0.1 to 111.0 ng/ ml) and for bile CEA it was 74.5 ng/ml (range:0.2 to 571.0 ng/ml).In the patients with uncomplicated cholelithiasis who underwent cholecystectomy,the average level of serum CEA was 2.9 ng/ml (range:1.0 to 3.5 ng/ml) and for bile CEA it was 1.2 ng/ml (range:0.3 to 2.9 ng/ml). The average duration of follow-up time was 16.5 months (range:6 to 48 months).Four patients who underwent extirpation of the colorectal carcinoma without evidence of hepatic metastasis and with an average bile CEA value of 213.2 ng/ml presented hepatic metastases between three and seventeen months after removal of the primary colorectal *** of them successfully underwent extirpation of the hepatic lesions. CONClusION:High CEA levels in gallbladders of patients undergoing curative operation for colorectal carcinoma may indicate the presence of hepatic *** patients must be followed up with special attention to the diagnosis of such lesions.

Over the past few years,there has been an emerging number of new psychoactive *** drugs are frequently mentioned as“legal highs”,“herbal highs”,“bath salts”and“research chemicals”.They are mostly sold and advertised on online forums and on the dark *** emerging new psychoactive substances are designed to mimic the effects of psychoactive groups,which are often abused *** synthetic opioids are a new trend in this context and represent an alarming threat to public *** the wide number of fatalities related to these compounds reported within the last few years,it is an important task to accurately identify these compounds in biologic matrices in order to administer an effective treatment and reverse the respiratory depression caused by opioid related *** dealing with fentanyl intoxication cases should consider that it could,in fact,be a fentanyl *** this reason,it is a helpful recommendation to include synthetic opioids in the routine toxicological screening procedures,including analysis in alternative matrices,if available,to investigate poly-drug use and possible tolerance to *** address this public health problem,better international collaboration,effective legislation,effective investigation,control of suspicious“research chemicals”online forums and continuous community alertness are *** article aims to review diverse reported fatalities associated with new synthetic opioids describing them in terms of pharmacology,metabolism,posology,available forms,as well as their toxic effects,highlighting the sample procedures and analytical techniques available for their detection and quantification in biological matrices.

Potential annual daylighting performance of a high-efficiency daylight redirecting slat system

While the primary role of window attachments is often to moderate glare and solar heat gains,they are also able to provide additional daylight to interior *** this purpose,a variety of daylight-redirecting window systems have been developed over the past 150 *** reflective systems(slats/light shelves)or prismatic systems that rely on total internal reflection work well under specific solar conditions,but generally sacrifice performance over a much wider range of incident solar angles and sky *** systems-typically reflective slats-are more responsive to sun angles but have not been able to achieve optimal performance for glare and daylight redirection efficiency.A previous investigation into an adjustable,reflective blind concept first conceived of in the late 1970s showed promise but was not reduced to practice due to lack of adequate simulation and analysis *** this paper,this concept is further developed and its energy and visual comfort performance evaluated for four mid-latitude,temperate climates using ray-tracing simulation *** indicate significant potential lighting energy savings when compared with conventional automated reflective blinds(2.1-4.9 kWh/(m^(2)·a),or 14%-42%,depending on climate and orientation)or,especially,manually-operated matte white Venetian blinds(1.4-7.9 kWh/(m^(2)·a),or 9%-54%,depending on climate and orientation),while maintaining acceptable or better visual comfort conditions throughout the interior space.
