Medicinal Plants Used to Treat Neurological Disorders in West Africa: A Case study with Guinea-Bissau Flora

The sub-saharan region holds a wide variety of indigenous plant species, still offering the possibility to discover very interesting new natural products with potential therapeutic value. Most of the African population depends on traditional medicine for primary health care, however, neurological disorders are often not considered as common diseases and many people with mental illnesses, like epilepsy, are severely affected by health-related stigma and discrimination. Epilepsy is the most common serious chronic brain disorder, estimated to affect at least 10 million people in Africa. Guinea-Bissau is located in West Africa, and its population is mainly rural with very few health services available. since the earliest times, Guinea-Bissau flora has constituted the main source of materials used in folk medicine and the local population, who is well versed in the uses of these plants and their properties. The aim of this study was to document the existing knowledge and practices related to the treatment of neurological disorders, namely epilepsy and seizures, in Guinea-Bissau and in other West African countries. The results presented from this study provide information not only on the specific plants used to treat neurological disorders, but also on social knowledge brought in by various ethnic groups, each one having its own culture, beliefs and ways of nature appropriation. Taking into account the existing knowledge on the medicinal properties of plants for treatment of neurologic disorders, it is believed that research in the areas of ethnomedicine and ethnopharmacology in Guinea-Bissau can bring promising results capable of adding value to the very rich natural resources of this country of West Africa.

This paper describes a static jacked-in pile method to reinforce the piled foundation of a seven-storey reinforced concrete *** original piles are cast-in-situ piles of diameter 0.8m,24m long,and supported on hard-plastic alluvial loam During the casting of the piles,faults were caused in them due to the horizontal pressure of the underground mud *** a result,about 5-6cm of the different settlements among the columns were *** order to reinforce the pile foundation,new piles of section 0.3m*0.3m,11m long were statically jacked into medium coarse *** original caps were also enlarged. The theory of the reinforcing is based on the interaction of the original piles and the new piles in a *** spring coefficient K1 of the original piles can be obtained by the observed settlement curves of the columns,whereas the spring coefficient K2 of the new piles can be obtained by calculation and loading *** relationship between the incremental settlement△s and the incremental loading△N can be expressed by△s=△N/(Kl+nK2)where n is the number of the new piles in the cap. After reinforcing,the observed settlements prove that the theory of interaction and the method of statically jacked-in pile is correct.

On the eigenvalues and eigendisplacement of the critical mode in horizontally layered media

Wave propagation in horizontally layered media is a classical problem in seismic-wave *** semi-infinite space,a nondispersive Rayleigh wave mode exists,and the eigendisplacement decays exponentially with *** a layered model with increasing layer velocity,the phase velocity of the Rayleigh wave varies between the s-wave velocity of the bottom half-space and that of the classical Rayleigh wave propagated in a supposed half-space formed by the parameters of the top *** the phase velocity is the same as the P-or s-wave velocity of the layer,which is called the critical mode or critical phase velocity of surface waves,the general solution of the wave equation is not a homogeneous(expressed by trigonometric functions)or inhomogeneous(expressed by exponential functions)plane wave,but one whose amplitude changes linearly with depth(expressed by a linear function).Theories based on a general solution containing only trigonometric or exponential functions do not apply to the critical mode,owing to the singularity at the critical phase *** this study,based on the classical framework of generalized reflection and transmission coefficients,the propagation of surface waves in horizontally layered media was studied by introducing a solution for the linear function at the critical phase ***,the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the critical mode can be calculated by solving a singular *** eigendisplacement characteristics associated with the critical phase velocity were investigated for different layered *** contrast to the normal mode,the eigendisplacement associated with the critical phase velocity exhibits different *** the phase velocity is equal to the s-wave velocity in the bottom half-space,the eigendisplacement remains constant with increasing depth.

Glycerol solutions of highly concentrated biomineral counter-ions towards water-responsive mineralization: Demonstration on bacterial cellulose and its application in hard tissue repair

Mineralization has found widespread use in the fabrication of composite biomaterials for hard tissue *** current mineralization processes are mainly carried out in neutral aqueous solutions of biomineral counter-ions(a pair of cation and anion that form the corresponding minerals at certain conditions),which are stable only at very low *** typically results in inefficient mineralization and weak control over biomineral ***,we find that,in the organic solvent glycerol,a variety of biomineral counter-ions(e.g.,Ca/PO_(4),Ca/CO_(3),Ca/sO_(4),Mg/PO_(4),or Fe/OH)corresponding to distinct biominerals at significantly high concentrations(up to hundreds-fold greater than those of simulated body fluid(sBF))are able to form translucent and stable solutions(mineralizing solution of highly concentrated counter-ions(MsCIs)),and mineralization can be triggered upon them with external solvents(e.g.,water or ethanol).Furthermore,with pristine bacterial cellulose(BC)membrane as a model,we demonstrate an effective and controllable mineralization performance of MsCIs on organic *** approach not only forms the homogeneous biominerals on the BC fibers and in the interspaces,but also provides regulations over mineralization rate,mineral content,phase,and *** resulting mineralized BC membranes(MBCs)exhibit high cytocompatibility and favor the proliferation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(rBMsC).Following this,we prepare a mineralized bone suture(MBs)from MBC for non-weight bearing bone fixation,which then is tested on a rabbit median sternotomy *** shows firm fixation of the rabbit sternum without causing discernible toxicity or inflammatory *** study,by extending the mineralization to the organic solution system of highly concentrated counter-ions,develops a promising strategy to design and build targeted mineral-based composites.

Hydrogen acquisition from solar energy is an effective way to address energy crisis,which makes the development of efficient photocatalysts become the main direction of scientific ***,cobalt phthalocyanine/oxygen-doped g-C_(3)N_(4)(CoPc/OCN) s-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was designed by coupling multi-step calcination with solvothermal method for enhanced photothermal-assisted photocatalytic H_(2) *** multistep calcined g-C_(3)N_(4) is easier for O-doping formation,and the ethanol solvothermal strategy is utilized to enhance the dispersion of CoPc on OCN nano sheet surface and forms sufficient s-scheme heterojunction through *** addition,the active sites and excellent photothermal properties of CoPc itself further improve the integrated photocatalytic activity of CoPc/OCN s-scheme *** optimal photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of CoPc/OCN s-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst reached 9.56 mmol·g^(-1)·h^(-1),which is 2.69 and 1.23 times higher than that of CN and OCN,*** work provides a valuable design idea and scheme for enhancing the multi-factor co-assisted photocatalytic H_(2) evolution performance.

screen sensors are the most commonly used human-machine interfaces in our everyday life,which have been extensively applied in personal electronics like *** screen sensors are attracting growing interest due to their distinct advantages of high interaction freedom,comfortability,and hand ***,the material compositions of current touchless screen sensors are rigid and fragile,hardly meeting the needs of wearable and stretchable on-skin electronics ***,these touchless screen sensors are also restricted by high power consumption,limited gesture types of recognition,and the requirement of light ***,we report a stretchable on-skin touchless screen sensor(OTss)enabled by an ionic hydrogel-based triboelectric nanogenerator(TENG).Compared with current touchless screen sensors,the OTss is stretchable,self-powered,and competent to recognize diverse gestures by making use of charges naturally carried on fingers without the need of sufficient light *** on-skin noncontact screen operating system is further demonstrated on the basis of the OTss,which could unlock a cellphone interface in touchless operation mode on the human *** work for the first time introduces the on-skin touchless concept to screen sensors and offers a direction to develop new-generation screen sensors for future cellphones and personal electronics.

In this paper,the problem of online distributed optimization subject to a convex set is studied via a network of *** agent only has access to a noisy gradient of its own objective function,and can communicate with its neighbors via a *** handle this problem,an online distributed stochastic mirror descent algorithm is *** works on online distributed algorithms involving stochastic gradients only provide the expectation bounds of the *** from them,we study the high probability bound of the regrets,i.e.,the sublinear bound of the regret is characterized by the natural logarithm of the failure probability's *** mild assumptions on the graph connectivity,we prove that the dynamic regret grows sublinearly with a high probability if the deviation in the minimizer sequence is sublinear with the square root of the time ***,a simulation is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our theoretical results.

The increasingly frequent and severe regional-scale compound heatwave-drought extreme events(CHDEs),driven by global warming,present formidable challenges to ecosystems,residential livelihoods,and economic ***,uncertainty persists regarding the future trend of CHDEs and their insights into regional spatiotemporal *** integrating daily meteorological data from observations in 1961-2022 and global climate models(GCMs)based on the shared socioeconomic Pathways,the evolution patterns of CHDEs were compared and examined among three sub-catchments of the Yangtze River Basin,and the return periods of CHDE in 2050s and 210Os were *** findings indicate that the climate during the 2022 CHDE period was the warmest and driest recorded in 1961-2022,with precipitation less than 154.5 mm and a mean daily maximum temperature 3.4°C higher than the average of 1981-2010,whereas the char-acteristics in the sub-catchments exhibited temporal and spatial *** July-August 2022,the most notable feature of CHDE was its extremeness since 1961,with return periods of~200-year in upstream,80-year in midstream,and 40-year in downstream,*** 2050,the return periods witnessed 2022 CHDE would likely be reduced by *** towards 2100,under the highest emission scenario of ssP585,it was projected to substantially increase the frequency of CHDEs,with return periods reduced to one-third in the upstream and downstream,as well as halved in the *** findings provide valuable insights into the changing risks associated with forthcoming climate extremes,emphasizing the urgency of addressing these challenges in regional management and sustainable development.
