Investigation of possible risk factors in the development of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis

AIM： To analyze the possible risk factors in the development of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis（sAC） through an evaluation of skin allergy tests and data obtained from ***： The study included a total of 75 sAC patients and 71 control subjects without sAC diagnosis who were admitted to the Abant Izzet Baysal University Medical Faculty Ophthalmology Clinic between March 2016 and December 2016. skin prick tests were performed for all participants. serum levels of total IgE and 25-OH vitamin D were also measured. In the tear, total IgE levels were measured. Moreover, possible risk factors for the onset of sAC（smoking, paracetamol exposure, vitamin D supplementation and environmental factors etc.） were examined for all patients by both prenatal and postnatal ***： The patients with sAC were found to have a history of maternal paracetamol exposure during the prenatal period. Likewise, in the same patient group, the duration of postnatal vitamin D supplementation was shorter（P〈0.001）. However, no significant correlation was found between sAC and maternal antibiotic exposure, maternal smoking, the mode of delivery and birth weight, as well as presence of pets. Moreover, patients with sAC were more likely to have asthma, allergic rhinitis and oral allergy syndrome. We have also found that sAC patients＇ mothers and siblings were more likely to have allergic conjunctivitis. Likewise, their fathers were more likely to have allergic rhinitis. CONCLUsION： Prenatal maternal paracetamol exposure and shorter duration of vitamin D supplementation in the postnatal period may play a role in development of sAC. Therefore prevention of unnecessary gestational paracetamol intake and vitamin D supplementation during infancy could potentially reduce the onset and development of sAC.

Identification of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) from pre-fermented liquids of selected cereals and legumes and characterization of their exopolysaccharides (EPs)

Recently, isolation of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) strains with important technological functions from plant-based products has gained special interests related with the increment of consumer preferences to the plant-based fermented products. In this context, various cereals and legumes that were underwent to germination or not were selected for the isolation of exopolysaccharide (EPs) producer LAB strains in this study. Following genotypic discrimination, 17 distinct strains belonging to Weissella confusa, Weissella cibaria, Lactococcus lactis subsp. hordniae, Leuconostoc lactis, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Leuconostoc mesenteroides were identified from pre-ferment liquids. Two strains Weissella confusa W-16 and Leuconostoc lactis GW-6 were the highest EPs producers, and their EPss were further characterized. The 1H and 13C NMR results revealed that both strains were dextran producers containing (1 → 3)-linked α-d-glucose units as branches with 9.2% and 6.9% levels for Weissella confusa W-16 and Leuconostoc lactis GW-6, respectively. FTIR analysis also supported the dextran structure and demonstrated the functional groups within the dextrans. A high level of thermal stability was observed in both dextrans detected by TGA and DsC analysis. Both dextrans were in amorphous characteristics determined by XRD analysis. These findings demonstrate that pre-fermented liquids of different cereals and legumes can be source of technologically important LAB strains with EPs production characteristics.

A systematic review of progenitor survival and maturation in Parkinsonian models

stem cell-based brain repair is a promising emergent therapy for Parkinson's disease based on years of foundational research using human fetal donors as a cell *** current therapeutic options for patients,this approach has the potential to provide longterm stem cell–derived reconstruction and restoration of the dopaminergic input to denervated regions of the brain allowing for restoration of certain functions to *** ultimate clinical success of stem cell–derived brain repair will depend on both the safety and efficacy of the approach and the latter is dependent on the ability of the transplanted cells to survive and differentiate into functional dopaminergic neurons in the Parkinsonian *** the pre-clinical literature suggests that there is considerable variability in survival and differentiation between studies,the aim of this systematic review was to assess these parameters in human stem cell-derived dopaminergic progenitor transplant studies in animal models of Parkinson's disease.A defined systematic search of the PubMed database was completed to identify relevant studies published up to March *** screening,76 articles were included in the analysis from which 178 separate transplant studies were *** these,graft survival could be assessed in 52 studies and differentiation in 129 ***,we found that graft survival ranged froms transplanted,with a median of 51%of transplanted cells surviving in the brain;while dopaminergic differentiation of the cells ranged from 0% to 46% of cells transplanted with a median of 3%.This systematic review suggests that there is considerable scope for improvement in the differentiation of stem cell-derived dopaminergic progenitors to maximize the therapeutic potential of this approach for patients.

Lactic Acid Bacteria(LAB)from different niches can be responsible for the production of distinct exopolysaccharides(EPs)that might possess important structural and technological *** this respect,the aim of this study was to isolate an EPs producer LAB strain from bee pollen *** mesenteroides BI-20 with a slimy-mucoid colony morphology was identified from bee pollen and the structural,technological and functional characteristics of EPs produced by this strain were *** BI-20 was a highly branched dextran containing 20%(1→3)-linked α-D-glucose branches determined by ^(1)H and ^(13)C NMR *** presence of(1→6)/(1→3)-linkedα-D-glucose linkages in dextran BI-20 was also confirmed by FTIR *** BI-20,with a molecular weight of 1×10^(8) Da,possessed strong thermal properties,amorphous nature and highly branched and fibrous microstructural characteristics determined by DsC,TGA,XRD and sEM analysis,*** terms of functional roles,dextran BI-20 demonstrated strong antioxidant capacity detected by ABTs and CUPRAC ***,no digestion was observed in dextran BI-20 under simulated gastric *** of this study unveiled techno-functional characteristics of dextran BI-20 produced by a bee pollen isolate LAB strain.

Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms with certain characteristics such as survival under gastrointestinal conditions,adhesion to intestinal surface and different functions which result in several health benefits to *** this regards,this study aimed to isolate Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) from sourdough and human feces as two different environments and to test their potential probiotic *** total nine distinct isolates were assessed with several probiotic functions such as in vitro adhesion to human colon cells,antimicrobial activities and survival under harsh gastrointestinal *** general,distinct strains showed strong antimicrobial activity against the pathogenic and fungal strains tested in this ***,the adhesion levels to HT29 cells were determined between 0.29 % and 9.54% and Lactobacillus paracasei F7B showed the highest *** isolates tolerated the bile salt after 24 h and the infant feces isolates showed good survival characteristics at pH 4.
