AIM:To investigate the effects of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPTiO 2 ) and microparticles (MPTiO 2 ) on the inflammatory response in the small intestine of mice. METHODs: Bl 57/6 male mice received distilled water suspensions containing TiO 2 (100 mg/kg body weight) as NPTiO 2 (66 nm), or MPTiO 2 (260 nm) by gavage for 10 d, once a day; the control group received only distilled water. At the end of the treatment the duodenum, jejunum and ileum were extracted for assessment of cytokines, inflammatory cells and titanium content. The cytokines interleukin (IL)-1b, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, IL-13, IL-17, IL-23, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), intracellular interferon-γ (IFN-γ) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in segments of jejunum and ileum (mucosa and underlying muscular tissue). CD4 + and CD8 + T cells, natural killer cells, and dendritic cells were evaluated in duodenum, jejunum and ileum samples fixed in 10% formalin by immuno-histochemistry. The titanium content was determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. REsULTs: We found increased levels of T CD4 + cells (cells/mm 2 ) in duodenum:NP 1240 ± 139.4, MP 1070 ± 154.7 vs 458 ± 50.39 (P s 526.6 ± 61.43 (P s 466.9 ± 22.4 (P son to the control group, the groups receiving TiO 2 showed a statistically significant increase in the levels of the inflammatory cytokines IL-12, IL-4, IL-23, TNF-α, IFN-γ and TGF-β. A Variational Finite Element Model for Large-Eddy simulations of Turbulent Flows

The authors introduce a new Large Eddy simulation model in a channel, based on the projection on finite element spaces as filtering operation in its variationM form, for a given triangulation （Th）h〉0. The eddy viscosity is expressed in terms of the friction velocity in the boundary layer due to the wall, and is of a standard sub grid-model form outside the boundary layer. The mixing length scale is locally equal to the grid size. The computational domain is the channel without the linear sub-layer of the boundary layer. The no-slip boundary condition （or BC for short） is replaced by a Navier （BC） at the computational wall. Considering the steady state case, the authors show that the variational finite element model they have introduced, has a solution （Vh,Ph）h〉O that converges to a solution of the steady state Navier-stokes equation with Navier BC.

Analysis of the genotoxic potential of low concentrations of Malathion on the Allium cepa cells and rat hepatoma tissue culture

Based on the concentration of Malathion used in the field, we evaluated the genotoxic potential of low concentrations of this insecticide on meristematic and F1 cells of Allium cepa and on rat hepatoma tissue culture（HTC cells）. In the A. cepa, chromosomal aberrations（CAs）, micronuclei（MN）, and mitotic index（MI） were evaluated by exposing the cells at 1.5,0.75, 0.37, and 0.18 mg/m L of Malathion for 24 and 48 hr of exposure and 48 hr of recovery time. The results showed that all concentrations were genotoxic to A. cepa cells. However,the analysis of the MI has showed non-relevant effects. Chromosomal bridges were the CA more frequently induced, indicating the clastogenic action of Malathion. After the recovery period, the higher concentrations continued to induce genotoxic effects, unlike the observed for the lowest concentrations tested. In HTC cells, the genotoxicity of Malathion was evaluated by the MN test and the comet assay by exposing the cells at 0.09, 0.009, and0.0009 mg/5 m L culture medium, for 24 hr of exposure. In the comet assay, all the concentrations induced genotoxicity in the HTC cells. In the MN test, no significant induction of MN was observed. The genotoxicity induced by the low concentrations of Malathion presented in this work highlights the importance of studying the effects of low concentrations of this pesticide and demonstrates the efficiency of these two test systems for the detection of genetic damage promoted by Malathion.

Water yield and biomass production for on a eucalypt-dominated Mediterranean catchment under different climate scenarios

Worldwide,forests are vital in the regulation of the water cycle regulation and in water balance *** of ecohydrological responses of production forests is essential to support management strategies,especially where water is already *** climatological patterns are expected to impact thermopluviometric regimes,water cycle components,hydrological responses,and plant physiology,evapotranspiration rates,crop productivity and land management *** work(1)assessed the impacts of different predicted climate conditions on water yield;(2)inferred the impacts of climate change on biomass production on eucalypt-to-eucalypt succes *** this end,the widely accepted soil and Water Assessment Tool(sWAT)was run with the RCA,HIRHAM5 and RACMO climate models for two emission scenarios(RCP 4.5 and8.5).Three 12-year periods were considered to simulate tree growth under coppice *** results revealed an overall reduction in streamflow and water yield in the catchment in line with the projected reduction in total annual ***,HIRHAM5 and RACMO models forecast a slight shift in seasonal streamflow of up to 2 months(for2024-2048)in line with the projected increase in precipitation from May to *** biomass production,the extreme climate model(RCA)and severe emis sion scenario(RCP 8.5)predicted a decrease up to 46%.However,in the less extreme and more-correlated(with actual catchment climate conditions)climate models(RACMO and HIRHAM5)and in the less extreme emission scenario(RCP 4.5),biomass production increased(up to 20%),and the growth cycle was slightly *** was proven to be a valuable tool to assess climate change impacts on a eucalypt-dominated catchment and is a suitable decision-support tool for forest managers.

BACKGROUND Malignant transformation(MT)of mature cystic teratoma(MCT)has a poor prognosis,especially in advanced *** chemoradiotherapy(CCRT)has an inhibitory effect on *** sUMMARY Herein,we present a case in which CCRT had a reduction effect preoperatively.A 73-year-old woman with pyelonephritis was referred to our *** tomography revealed right hydronephrosis and a 6-cm pelvic *** ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy(EUs-FNB)revealed squamous cell *** patient was diagnosed with MT of *** to her poor general con-dition and renal malfunction,we selected CCRT,expecting fewer adverse *** CCRT,her performance status improved,and the tumor size was reduced;surgery was *** months postoperatively,the patient developed dis-semination and lymph node *** chemotherapy was *** died 18 months after treatment *** EUs-FNB was useful in the diagnosis of MT of MCT;CCRT suppressed the disea-se and improved quality of life.

Can rainfall seasonality trigger soil water repellency in a tropical riparian forest?

Though riparian areas generally have a shallow water table and higher soil moisture compared to up slope areas,climatic seasonality may trigger water repellency in tropical riparian forests,which,if persistent,could negatively affect essential ecosystem functions related to water resources protection such as reduced overland-flow,sediment transport,and nutrient *** objective of this study was to answer the following:can tropical riparian forests develop water repellency?If so,does water repellency affect infiltration on a seasonal basis?For this,water repellency and infiltration were measured in a grid of 72points during a dry and a wet month of a tropical riparian forest with a shallow water table in a region with highly marked climatic *** repellency and infiltration were significantly different between the wet and dry *** repellency affected negatively infiltration in the dry month,its effect in the wet month was *** a result,a higher infiltration capacity was observed over the wet *** research has claimed that the development and persistence of repellency in soils could promote other hydrological processes such as overland *** findings shown here demonstrate that such phenomenon does not persist longer than the dry season.
