Microbiological Quality of Cyperus esculentus L. Products sold in Ouagadougou and Bobo Dioulasso (Burkina Faso)

This study aimed to assess the microbiological quality of tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus L.) products sold in Ouagadougou and Bobo Dioulasso. The microbial load of tubers and tiger nut milk was determined using IsO 4833-1 (2003) standard (total mesophilic aerobic flora), NF IsO 7954 (1998) standard (yeasts and molds), and IsO 4832 (2006) standard (total coliforms, thermotolerant coliforms). The results showed that tiger nut tubers had an average microbial load between 4.86 ± 7.03 × 10sup>6sup> UFC/g and 1.82 ± 2.30 × 10sup>7sup> UFC/g for total mesophilic aerobic flora, from 4.34 ± 10.6 × 10sup>5sup> UFC/g to 3.52 ± 4.54 × 10sup>6sup> UFC/g for yeasts and molds, from 2.23 ± 2.25 × 10sup>5sup> UFC/g to 1.41 ± 2.16 × 10sup>5sup> UFC/g for total coliforms and from 1.83 ± 2.03 × 10sup>5sup> UFC/g to 7.0 ± 10.8 × 10sup>4sup> CFU/g for thermotolerant coliforms. For tiger nut milk samples, the average microbial load varied from 3.48 ± 2.98 × 10sup>6sup> CFU/g to 2.80 ± 5.69 × 107 CFU/g for total mesophilic aerobic flora, from 5.00 ± 7.21 × 10sup>4sup> CFU/g to 1.88 ± 3.31 × 10sup>5sup> CFU/g for yeasts and molds, from 4.58 ± 10.4 × 10sup>4sup> CFU/g to 6.31 ± 9.17 × 10sup>5sup> CFU/g for total coliforms and 7.00 ± 7.00 × 10sup>3sup> CFU/g to 2.87 ± 5.86 × 10sup>5sup> CFU/g for thermotolerant coliforms. This study revealed that the tubers and tiger nut milk sold in Ouagadougou and Bobo Dioulasso had a high microbial load which could lead to the degradation of these products and food poisoning for consumers.

Introduction: Depression is common in HIV/AIDs. We aim to investigate the frequency and the grade of this mental disorder in partners and determine its influence on sexual dysfunctions in serodiscordant couples in Ouagadougou. Patients/Method: This cross-sectional study was monitored from 1 January to 31 June 2010 in the internal medicine department of CHUYO, Ouagadougou. HIV-infected patients and their seronegative partners who gave their consent were included. Depression was diagnosed using the Beck Depression Inventory 13 items (BDI-13). Results: Eighty heterosexual and monogamous serodiscordant couples were studied. 31 (38.7%) HIV-infected and 23 (28.7%) seronegative partners were affected by depression;p = 0.18. The score of depression was 3.5 ± 2.1 in HIV-infected and 3.3 ± 1.6 in seronegative partners;p = 0.85. Depression was diagnosed in both partners in 13 couples (16.2%) and in only one partner in 28 couples (35%). Depression was diagnosed at least for one partner in 40 (51.3%) couples where sexual dysfunctions affected partner (s) and in 1 (50%) couple where no sexual dysfunction was reported. Conclusion: Psychological assessment is needed for a better management of HIV/AIDs in serodiscordant couples.

Characterization of Peanut shells for Their Valorization in Earth Brick

Peanut shells from Burkina Faso were characterized using mineralogical, microstructural and chemical methods to perform its possibility to be used as reinforce in adobe bricks. It consists of cellulose (48 wt%), hemicellulose (3 wt%) and lignin (28 wt%). The peanut shells were characterized by high porosity and showed water absorption around 198% at 72 hours. Its chemical composition is essentially composed of silica, iron oxides, alumina and calcium oxide. Its microstructure showed that the peanut shells were a compilation of microfibers with high porous of borders. In watery solution, the peanut shells released polyphenols. Thermal conductivity of peanut at 25 °C was 0.155 ± 0.021 W/mK. The physico-chemical characteristics of peanut shells were similar to those found with agricultural by-products used in adobe reinforce.

Thoracic Wounds by Firearm at the University Hospital Yalgado Ouedraogo (YO)

Introduction: Thoracic wounds by firearms are frequent and severe. They may involve the patient’s prognosis. Objective: To study the epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical, therapeutic and evolutionary aspects of the thoracic wounds by firearms. Material and method: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study of all patients over the age of 15 who consulted in the university hospital-YO in the department of general and digestive surgery over a period of 5 years. Results: We collected 50 cases of thoracic wounds by firearms on 183 thoracic wounds with a prevalence of 27.3%. There were 48 men (96%). The average age was 30 years. The patients came from urban areas in 66% of cases;the informal sector accounted for 44% of the cases. The pistol was the most involved firearm (46.9%). The consultation period was less than 6 hours in 78% of patients. An unstable hemodynamic state was found in 42% (n = 21). A fluid and mixed pleural effusion syndrome was found in 46% and 26% of patients, respectively. Associated lesions were diaphragm involvement, and lesions of intra-abdominal hollow organs. Thoracic drainage was performed in 24 patients (48%) and was associated with a laparotomy in 8 patients. The average hospital stay was 7.5 days. Mortality was 14%. Conclusion: the thoracic wounds by firearms are frequent in civilian practice. The thoracic CT allows mapping of the lesions and thoracic drainage constitutes the essential part of surgical treatment. The fight against the proliferation of weapons deserves to be promoted.

Treatment of Traumatic Acetabulum Lesions in an African Orthopaedic Trauma Department

Background: The management of traumatic acetabular injuries (TAI), which are often complex and diverse, is difficult and costly in the context of low-income African countries. Objective: To evaluate the treatment of traumatic acetabular lesions in the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department of the Yalgado Ouedraogo University Hospital, for their better management. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective study, conducted in our department from January 2012 to December 2016. sixty-three patients with TAI and complete records were selected. The mean age of patients with coxofemoral dislocations was 34.2 years and 36.4 years for acetabulum fractures with male predominance in both injury types. The injuries were mainly caused by a violent road traffic accident (RTA) (90.5%). Forty hip dislocations and 41 acetabular fractures were reported, with a prevalence of iliac dislocations (52.5%) and posterior wall fractures of the acetabulum (24.4%). Results: The average time to manage TAI was 15.9 hours (range 2 - 100). Medical treatment was performed in all patients. Thirty-eight coxofemoral dislocations and 34 acetabular fractures were treated by orthopedic methods. seven complex acetabular fractures and two coxo-femoral dislocations were performed by surgical method. Two patients died (3.2%), one in a hemorrhagic shock table and the other in a septic shock table. Immediate and late complications were identified. Conclusion: Early and adequate management of our TAI, requires a modern technical platform and a sufficient number of qualified medical personnel to improve their functional outcomes.

Introduction: surgery can cause anxiety and worry, such as waking up in pain, being physically harmed or dying. This study aimed to assess the experience of patients undergoing planned gynaecological surgery in the Obstetrics Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine department of the University Hospital Centre of Bogodogo. Patients and methods: This was a cross-sectional study with prospective data collection during the period from June 1 to August 31, 2018. The study population consisted of patients who received scheduled gynaecological surgery during the period. Results: seventy-six (76) patients underwent scheduled surgery and 62 were included. During discussion with the gynaecologist, 58 patients (93.55%) were satisfied. When the surgery was announced, 41 patients (66.13%) were anxious. At the consultation with the anaesthetist 59 patients (95.16%) were satisfied with the discussions. Fifty-five patients (88.7%) were anxious on admission to the operating theatre. The quality of care was satisfactory for 61 patients (98.39%) and all patients were satisfied with the care team. Conclusion: Periodic evaluation of patients’ experiences should therefore be incorporated into care evaluation policies in health facilities in order to contribute to continuous improvement in the quality of medical and surgical care.

Introduction: Antenatal care (ANC) contributes to the reduction of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. The study aimed to investigate the determinants of the low proportion of pregnant women seen for first antenatal care in the first trimester of pregnancy at the urban medical center of Koudougou, Burkina Faso. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with data collection from June 08 to August 18, 2021. It involved a sample of 302 participants including 280 pregnant women and 22 maternity providers. semi-structured individual interviews, non-participant observation, and a literature review were used. Results: Pregnant women age 20 and over, knowledge of the date of their last menstrual period, and knowledge of the antenatal care calendar were associated with coming into contact (1) with Antenatal care in the first trimester of pregnancy. In addition, there was a lack of availability of antenatal care services, inadequate reception of clients, and shortages of health products. Conclusion: There is a need to revisit strategies for communicating with women about ANC, reorganizing ANC services, and improving ANC services.

situs inversus is an abnormal placement of the thoracic and/or abdominal organs that are inverted right/left from normal. It is a rare congenital malformation often discovered in childhood. In adults, it can lead to misdiagnosis. Clinical case: A 35-year-old female patient, seen in a hepatogastroenterology consultation for acute spontaneous pain in the right hypochondrium. she had no particular clinical history. A diagnosis of hepatopathy was suspected. Abdominal and pelvic CT scans showed the left liver, stomach and spleen in the right hypochondrium, but with the heart in place, suggesting incomplete situs inversus. The evolution in our patient was spontaneously resolved with analgesics and antispasmodics, which leads us to believe that the volvulus was probably partial and without other complications. Conclusion: In developing countries, antenatal diagnosis of situs inversus is rare and is usually made during a pathology that leads the patient to a medical consultation. CT is one of the key paraclinical examinations for its diagnosis as genetic tests are not widely available.

Objective: To describe the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of cases of vaginal bleeding in the nonpregnant patient received in emergency at Yalgado OUEDRAOGO University Hospital. Materials and Methods: It was a retrospective and descriptive study that involved the clinical records of 326 patients collected from January 01, 2009 to December 31, 2013. Results: The average age of women was 47 years old with extremes at 12 and 82 years old. Women of childbearing age accounted for 61.6% and postmenopausal women 18.7%. 70.7% of women were pauciparous or nulliparous. Menorrhagia and pelvic pain were the main signs associated. This symptomatology required hospitalization in 85.2% of cases. The main aetiologies were uterine myomas 49.69%, cervical cancer 23% and functional metrorrhagia 11.04%. Progestin was the most used drug in 67.1% of cases. Total abdominal hysterectomy and abdominal myomectomy were the most commonly used surgical methods with 22.3%, 44.4% of cases. Eleven death cases were observed. Conclusion: Gynecological metrorrhagia is more common in women of childbearing age than in menopausal women. The main causes are fibroma, cervical cancer and functional metrorrhagia.
