Caution to Apply Magnetic Barkhausen Noise Method to Nondestructive Evaluation of Plastic Deformation in Some Ferromagnetic Materials

Magnetic Barkhausen Noise(MBN) method is known as an effective nondestructive evaluation(NDE) method for evaluation of residual stress in ferromagnetic materials. Some studies on the feasibility of the MBN method for NDE of residual strains were also conducted and found applicable. However, these studies are mainly focused on the state of residual strains which were introduced through a one-cycle-loading process. In practice, however, structures may suffer from an unpredictable and complicated loading history, i.e., the final state of plastic strain may be induced by several times of large loads. Whether the loading history has influences on MBN signals or not is of great importance for the practical application of the MBN method. In this paper, several ferromagnetic specimens with the same final state of residual strain but of different loading history were fabricated and inspected by using a MBN testing system. The experimental results reveal that the loading history has a significant influence on the detected MBN signals especially for a residual strain in range less than 1%, which doubts the feasibility to apply the MBN method simply in the practical environment. In addition, micro-observations on the magnetic domain structures of the plastic damaged specimens were also carried out to clarify the influence mechanism of loading history on the MBN signals.

Seasonal Transition Features of Large-Scale Moisture Transport in the Asian-Australian Monsoon Region

Using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data for the period of 1957-2001, the climatological seasonal transition features of large-scale vertically integrated moisture transport (VIMT) in the Asian-Australian monsoon region are investigated in this paper. The basic features of the seasonal transition of VIMT from winter to summer are the establishment of the summertime "great moisture river" pattern (named the GMR pattern) and its eastward expansion, associated with a series of climatological events which occurred in some "key periods", which include the occurrence of the notable southerly VIMT over the Indochina Peninsula in mid March, the activity of the low VIMT vortex around Sri Lanka in late April, and the onset of the South China Sea summer monsoon in mid May, among others. However, during the transition from summer to winter, the characteristics are mainly exhibited by the establishment of the easterly VIMT belt located in the tropical area, accompanied by some events occurring in "key periods". Further analyses disclose a great difference between the Indian and East Asian monsoon regions when viewed from the meridional migration of the westerly VIMT during the seasonal change process, according to which the Asian monsoon region can be easily divided into two parts along the western side of the Indochina Peninsula and it may also denote different formation mechanisms between the two regions.

Curvature derived from LiDAR digital elevation models as simple indicators of debris-flow susceptibility

To mitigate the damage caused by debris flows resulting from heavy precipitation and to aid in evacuation plan preparation, areas at risk should be mapped on a scale appropriate for affected individuals and communities. We tested the effectiveness of simply identifying debris-flow hazards through automated derivation of surface curvatures using LiDAR digital elevation models. We achieved useful correspondence between plan curvatures and areas of existing debris-flow damage in two localities in Japan using the analysis of digital elevation models(DEMs). We found that plan curvatures derived from 10 m DEMs may be useful to indicate areas that are susceptible to debris flow in mountainous areas. In residential areas located on gentle sloping debris flow fans, the greatest damage to houses was found to be located in the elongated depressions that are connected to mountain stream valleys. Plan curvaturederived from 5 m DEM was the most sensitive indicators for susceptibility to debris flows.

Efficient Breeding and Cultivation of Type 2 Red-fleshed Apple Cultivars Using a Search System for Suitable Apple Cultivar Combination

As apple possesses self-incompatibility, knowledge of the S-genotypes is very important for apple breeding and cultivation. We investigated the S-RNase genotypes of 13 type 2 red-fleshed apple cultivars and 8 lineages. All of the investigated type 2 red-fleshed apples contained the S3-RNase allele closely linked to the red-fleshed trait. We made a search system for ovule parents to efficiently produce new type 2 red-fleshed cultivars based on the S-RNase allele information(http://***/～hort/apple/red/). More than 90% of progenies from crossing a selected white-fleshed ovule parent with a type 2 red-fleshed pollen parent are expected to show the red-fleshed phenotype. We also compiled a database of the S-RNase genotypes of more than 1 000 apple cultivars, including a survey system of cultivar combinations showing those that were fully incompatible, semicompatible and fully compatible, written in Chinese(http://***/～hort/apple/ch/) and Japanese(http://***/～hort/apple/ja/).

Applications of same-beam VLBI in the orbit determination of multi-spacecrafts in a lunar sample-return mission

Same-beam VLBI means that two spacecrafts with small separation angles that transmit multi-frequency signals specially designed are observed simultaneously through the main beam of receiving antennas. In same-beam VLBI,the differential phase delay between the two spacecrafts and the two receiving antennas can be obtained within a small error of several picoseconds. As a successful application,the short-arc orbit determination of several hours for Rstar and Vstar,which are two small sub-spacecrafts of SELENE,has been much improved by using the same-beam VLBI data together with the Doppler and range data. The long-arc orbit determination of several days has also been accomplished within an error of about 10 m with the same-beam VLBI data incorporated. These results show the value of the same-beam VLBI for the orbit determination of multi-spacecrafts. This paper introduces the same-beam VLBI and Doppler observations of SELENE and the orbit determination results. In addition,this paper introduces how to use the same-beam VLBI for a lunar sample-return mission,which usually consists of an orbiter,a lander and a return unit. The paper also offers the design for the onboard radio sources in the lunar sample-return mission,and introduces applications of S-band multi-frequency same-beam VLBI in lunar gravity exploration and applications during all stages in the position/orbit determinations such as orbiting,landing,sampling,ascending,and docking.

Application of electrochemical depassivation in PRB systems to recovery Fe^0 reactivity

Permeable reactive barriers （PRBs） show remarkable Cr（VI） removal performance. However, the diminished removal rate because of mineral fouling over time is the bottleneck for application of PRBs. The present study demonstrated that electrochemical depassivation was effective for recovering the Fe^0 reactivity, and minerals can be cleaned layer by layer with no secondary ion contamination and no transformation from Cr（III） to Cr（VI）. The removal recovery rate increased with increasing electrolysis voltage before reaching the optimal electrolysis voltage, and then decreased as the electrolysis voltage further increased. The recovery effect at electrolysis voltages of 5, 10, and 15 V show the same trend as a function of electrolysis time, where recovery rate first increased and then decreased after reaching the optimal electrolysis time. The Cr（VI） removal rate significantly decreased with increasing electrolysis distance. Furthermore, Fe^0 brush meshes electrode, Fe^0 fillings, and polyvinyl chloride （PVC） meshes separators were combined to create an Electro-PRB configuration for the caisson excavation construction technique, which lays the foundation for establishment of promising Electro-PRB systems to treat Cr（VI）-contaminated groundwater.

The extracellular matrix of trabecular bone has a large surface exposed to the bone marrow and plays important roles such as hematopoietic stem cell niche formation and *** vitro reproduction of trabecular bone microenvironment would be valuable not only for developing a functional scaffold for bone marrow tissue engineering but also for understanding its biological ***,we analyzed and reproduced the initial stages of trabecular bone formation in mouse femur *** identified that the trabecular bone formation progressed through the following steps:(i)partial rupture of hypertrophic chondrocytes;(ii)calcospherite formation on cell membrane nano fragments(CNFs)derived from the ruptured cells;and(iii)calcospherite growth and fusion to form the initial three-dimensional(3D)structure of trabecular *** reproducing the initial trabecular bone formation in vitro,we collected CNFs from cultured cells and used as nucleation sites for biomimetic calcospherite ***,almost the same 3D structure of the initial trabecular bone could be obtained in vitro by using additional CNFs as a binder to fuse biomimetic calcospherites.

The dynamics of secondary large-scale structures in electron-temperature-gradient （ETG） turbulence is investigated based on gyrofluid simulations in sheared slab geometry. It is found that structural bifurcation to zonal flow dominated or streamer-like states depends on the spectral anisotropy of turbulent ETG fluctuation, which is governed by the magnetic shear. The turbulent electron transport is suppressed by enhanced zonal flows. However, it is still low even if the streamer is formed in ETG turbulence with strong shears. It is shown that the low transport may be related to the secondary excitation of poloidal long-wavelength mode due to the beat wave of the most unstable components or a modulation instability. This large-scale structure with a low frequency and a long wavelength may saturate, or at least contribute to the saturation of ETG fluctuations through a poloidal mode coupling. The result suggests a low fluctuation level in ETG turbulence.
