Study on an Undershot Cross-Flow Water Turbine

This study aims to develop a water turbine suitable for ultra-low heads in open channels, with the end goal being the effective utilization of unutilized hydroelectric energy in agricultural water channels. We performed tests by applying a cross-flow runner to an open channel as an undershot water turbine while attempting to simplify the structure and eliminate the casing. We experimentally investigated the flow fields and performance of water tur- bines in states where the flow rate was constant for the undershot cross-flow water turbine mentioned above. In addition, we compared existing undershot water turbines with our undershot cross-flow water turbine after at- taching a bottom plate to the runner. From the results, we were able to clarify the following. Although the effec- tive head for cross-flow runners with no bottom plate was lower than those found in existing runners equipped with a bottom plate, the power output is greater in the high rotational speed range because of the high turbine ef- ficiency. Also, the runner with no bottom plate differed from rtmners that had a bottom plate in that no water was being wound up by the blades or retained between the blades, and the former received twice the flow due to the flow-through effect. As a result, the turbine efficiency was greater for runners with no bottom plate in the full ro- tational speed range compared with that found in runners that had a bottom plate.

Differences between British and Japanese perspectives on forensic mental health systems:A preliminary study

AIM To clarify the differences in views on forensic mental health(FMH) systems between the United Kingdom and *** We conducted a series of semi-structured interviews with six leading forensic psychiatrists. Based on a discussion by the research team, we created an interview form. After we finished conducting all the interviews, we qualitatively analyzed their content. RESULTS In the United Kingdom the core domain of FMH was risk assessment and management; however, in Japan, the core domain of FMH was psychiatric testimony. In the United Kingdom, forensic psychiatrists were responsible for ensuring public safety, and psychopathy was identified as a disease but deemed as not suitable for medical treatment. On the other hand, in Japan, psychopathy was not considered a mental illness. CONCLUSION In conclusion, there are considerable differences between the United Kingdom and Japan with regard to the concepts of FMH. Some ideas taken from both cultures for better FMH practice were suggested.

Effect of educational intervention on attitudes toward the concept of criminal responsibility

AIM To evaluate the effect of educational intervention on individuals' knowledge of and attitudes toward forensic mental *** We conducted a questionnaire regarding attitudes toward various ideas about forensic mental health. The respondents attended a 1-h seminar regarding forensic mental health after answering the questionnaire. On completion of the seminar, the respondents answered another questionnaire containing many of the same questions as contained in the pre-seminar *** A total of 86 individuals attended the seminar, and 78 responded to the questionnaire. Only 13(18.8%) participants were supportive of the concept of criminal responsibility initially, and there was a statistically significant increase in those who became more supportive after the seminar, with 22(33%) being supportive after the seminar(Wilcoxon signed-rank test, P < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis revealed that participants who were skeptical about forensic mental systems and those with fewer opportunities to see media reports regarding psychiatry were likely to become supportive of criminal responsibility after the *** These results suggest that public attitudes toward criminal responsibility and mental health can be influenced via educational interventions.

Influence of Surface Properties Modified with Fine Shot Peening on Scuffing

Recently, gears of high strength, reliability, and surface-damage-resistant under severe service conditions are required to achieve the weight saving and downsizing of a product. For the high-speed condition in particular, it is important to understand the influence of the surface properties on the scuffing resistance. If the effective surface profile to improve the lubrication property was found, the metal surfaces could be obtained with both surface strength and surface lubricity. Herein, the influence of surface properties modified with fine shot peening, which can form the arbitrary surface profile, on the scuffing resistance in the rolling-sliding contact machine element, was investigated. The scuffing test was performed using a two-cylinder rolling contact test machine. In a specific sliding, a faster roller of 60% and a sliding velocity of 1.75 m/s were utilized. The scuffing test results with shot-peened test rollers and those with non-shot-peened test roller were compared. The influence of the surface roughness of the shot-peened test roller was also discussed. We found that the shot-peened roller had a better scuffing resistance compared with the roller without the shot-peening process.

Recently, the dominant structural size of electronic devices and systems becomes a micro or nano-scale. Those micro or nano-systems are fabricated by spattering or depositing the thin layers on other materials. However, due to the residual stress or the thermal expansion mismatch, the delamination between layers sometimes occurs and it degenerates the reliability of the systems. Therefore, it is important to assess the interfacial strength precisely [1]. In order to investigate the material parameters which govern the fracture phenomenon of an interface, it is important to model an interface itself. Ma and Kishimoto [2] proposed the interface model based on the internal variable theory of thermodynamics and the continuum constitutive relation between interface traction and interface separation has been developed. The cohesive law is formulated by taking into account of the anisotropy of interface debonding.

We report the discovery of a substellar companion around the intermediate- mass giant HD 175679. Precise radial velocity data of the star from the Xinglong Station and the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory revealed a Keplerian velocity variation with an orbital period of 1366.8±5.7 d, a semiamplitude of 380.2±3.2 m s-1 and an eccentricity of 0.378± 0.008. Adopting a stellar mass of 2.7± 0.3 M, we obtain that the minimum mass of the HD 175679 b is 37.3± 2.8 M and the semimajor axis is 3.36±0.12 AU. This discovery is the second brown dwarf companion candidate from a joint planet-search program between China and Japan.
