Evaluating mucosal healing using colon capsule endoscopy predicts outcome in patients with ulcerative colitis in clinical remission

AIM To examine whether second generation of colon capsule endoscopy(CCE-2) is acceptable for assessing the severity of mucosal inflammation and evaluating mucosal healing using CCE-2 is able to predict outcome in ulcerative colitis(UC) patients, especially in clinical *** A total of 30 consecutive UC patients in clinical remission were enrolled to undergo CCE-2. Clinical remission was defined as clinical activity index(CAI) ≤ 4 according to Rachmilewitz index. The rate of total colon observation and colon cleansing level were evaluated. Severity of mucosal inflammation in UC was assessed according to the Mayo endoscopic subscore(MES) and Ulcerative Colitis Endoscopic Index of Severity(UCEIS). Relapsefree survival was assessed. Acceptability of CCE-2 was assessed using a questionnaire *** The rate of total colon observation within its battery life was 93.3%. The proportion of "excellent" plus "good" cleansing level was 73.3%. The rate of mucosal healing(MES 0, 1) assessed by CCE-2 was 77.0%. The relapse-free survival rate was significantly higher in MES 0, 1 than in MES 2, 3(P = 0.0435), and in UCEIS 0-3 than in UCEIS 4-8(P = 0.0211), whereas there was no significant difference between CAI 0 and CAI 1-4 groups. A questionnaire survey revealed an overall acceptability of *** CCE-2 is acceptable for assessing the severity of mucosal inflammation in UC patients, especially in clinical remission. Evaluating mucosal healing using CCE-2 was able to predict outcome.

An integrated model to simulate sown area changes for major crops at a global scale

Dynamics of land use systems have attracted much attention from scientists around the world due to their ecological and socio-economic implications. An integrated model to dynamically simulate future changes in sown areas of four major crops (rice, maize, wheat and soybean) on a global scale is pre- sented. To do so, a crop choice model was developed on the basis of Multinomial Logit (Logit) model to model land users' decisions on crop choices among a set of available alternatives with using a crop utility function. A GIS-based Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model was adopted to simulate the crop yields under a given geophysical environment and farming management conditions, while the International Food Policy and Agricultural Simulation (IFPSIM) model was utilized to estimate crop price in the international market. The crop choice model was linked with the GIS-based EPIC model and the IFPSIM model through data exchange. This integrated model was then validated against the FAO statistical data in 2001-2003 and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) global land cover product in 2001. Both validation approaches indicated reliability of the model for ad- dressing the dynamics in agricultural land use and its capability for long-term scenario analysis. Finally, the model application was designed to run over a time period of 30 a, taking the year 2000 as baseline. The model outcomes can help understand and explain the causes, locations and consequences of land use changes, and provide support for land use planning and policy making.

Fully automatic DOM generation method based on optical flow field dense image matching

Automatic Digital Orthophoto Map(DOM)generation plays an important role in many downstream works such as land use and cover detection,urban planning,and disaster *** DOM generation methods can generate promising results but always need ground object filtered DEM generation before otho-rectification;this can consume much time and produce building facade contained *** address this problem,a pixel-by-pixel digital differential rectification-based automatic DOM generation method is proposed in this ***,3D point clouds with texture are generated by dense image matching based on an optical flow field for a stereo pair of images,***,the grayscale of the digital differential rectification image is extracted directly from the point clouds element by element according to the nearest neighbor method for matched ***,the elevation is repaired grid-by-grid using the multi-layer Locally Refined B-spline(LR-B)interpolation method with triangular mesh constraint for the point clouds void area,and the grayscale is obtained by the indirect scheme of digital differential rectification to generate the pixel-by-pixel digital differentially rectified image of a single image ***,a seamline network is automatically searched using a disparity map optimization algorithm,and DOM is smartly *** qualitative and quantitative experimental results on three datasets were produced and evaluated,which confirmed the feasibility of the proposed method,and the DOM accuracy can reach 1 Ground Sample Distance(GSD)*** comparison experiment with the state-of-the-art commercial softwares showed that the proposed method generated DOM has a better visual effect on building boundaries and roof completeness with comparable accuracy and computational efficiency.

Study on the transport of suspended sediment in an open channel flow with permeable spur dikes

The transport of suspended sediment in rivers with spur dikes is an important issue for bank protection and environmental *** experiments were performed to study the characteristics of the flow and the transport of suspended sediment in an open channel with permeable ***,the essentials of these characteristics were studied by comparing results of flume experiments on permeable and impermeable *** influence of the aspect ratio(d/l) of the interval between dikes(d) to the length of dikes(l) on these characteristics was then *** these experiments,the properties of horizontal eddies,turbulence structures,and suspended sediment concentrations were *** results show that the development of large-scale horizontal eddies requires some distance in a shear layer for permeable dikes,although they are periodically generated from the first dike in the case of impermeable *** basic structures of horizontal eddies are independent of the aspect ratio in the equilibrium region for permeable *** suspended sediment concentrations for cases of permeable dikes gradually decrease between the several upstream dikes and they approach a uniform distribution in the downstream region,although those in the case of the impermeable dikes are relatively uniform in the downstream direction.

Recent progress in the development of thermodynamic and kinetic databases of micro-soldering alloys,which were constructed within the framework of the Thermo-Calc and DICTRA software,was ***,a thermodynamic tool, ADAMIS(alloy database for micro-solders) was developed by combining the thermodynamic databases of micro-solders with Pandat,a multi-component phase diagram calculation software *** contains 11 elements,namely,Ag,Al,Au,Bi,Cu, In,Ni,Sb,Sn,Zn and Pb,and can handle all combinations of these elements in the whole composition *** obtained thermodynamic and kinetic databases can not only provide much valuable thermodynamic information such as phase equilibria and phase fraction,but also shows the kinetics and the evolution of microstructures when they are combined with some appropriate software programs and models,such as the phase field method and ADSTEFAN *** the viewpoints of computational thermodynamics and kinetics,some technical examples were given to demonstrate the great utility of these databases for the applications in the development of micro-soldering *** databases are expected to be powerful tools for the development of micro-solders and Cu substrate materials,as well as for promoting the understanding of interfacial phenomena and microstructure evolution between solders and substrates in electronic packaging technology.

On the Effects of Central Japan Expressway’s Commuter Toll Discount Policy in Nagoya Area

Road pricing policies have two equally important objectives that have to be considered： the optimal use of the road network and the fiscal sustainability for the management of the network. The aim of this work is to examine the effects on these two objectives of a recent pricing policy implemented in Japan＇s expressway networks. Recently the Nippon （Japan） Expressway Companies （NEXCO, operators of Japan＇s nation wide expressway network） have implemented several toll discount policies for users equipped with electronic toll collectors （ETCs）. One of the policies is the commuter discount policy that discounts 50% for a journey on the NEXCO expressway no longer than 100 km during the commuting peak hours. This paper examines its effect on congestion reduction in the road network of Nagoya area and its influence on the use of expressways operated by another major local public expressway company in Nagoya. The congestion easing effect of this policy is compared with a potential marginal cost pricing scheme. These observations suggest that policy coordination regarding toll levels is needed for expressway corporations and transportation authorities for improving transportation efficiency of utilization of the whole network.

Calculation of the self-formation driving force for composite microstructure in liquid immiscible alloy system

Using Becker's method, we calculate the interfacial energy between two liquid phases in an immiscible system. Based on the Gibbs-Thomson equation, the force acting on the droplet towards the thermal center can be obtained by integrating the interfacial energy between the droplet and matrix liquid phase, which is related to both the radius of a droplet and the temperature gradient. In addition, the forces of gravitation and buoyancy also act on the droplet. The calculated results indicate that the resultant for these forces together mainly decides the microstructure morphology of the solidified alloy. The calculated results are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental results.
