To realize a nuclear fusion reactor,magnetic confinement of plasma has been investigated for a long time to produce high performance（or high density and temperature）plasma.It has been found that plasma turbulence degrades the property of plasma confinement.Therefore,plasma turbulence has been one of the important problems to be studied in the field of magnetically confinement fusion.In the present research of plasma turbulence,it is necessary to observe the turbulence not only in local region of plasma but also over the entire plasma because the plasma turbulence consists of the fluctuations of various scales from ion Lamor radius to the full size of plasma cross-section.Tomography is one of possible diagnostics to observe the entire plasma and to realizelocal and fine measurements of turbulence.We have constructed a prototype of such tomography system and installed on a linear cylindrical device,named Plasma Assenbly for Nonlinear Turbulence Analysis（PANTA）in Kyushu University.We are now developing a tomography algorithm using Singular Value Decomposition（SVD）in addition to the already developed ones,Maximum Likelihood-Expectation Method（ML-EM）,Algebraic Reconstruction Technique（ART）,Fourier-Bessel series and Cormack expansion.The paper reports simulation and experimental results of the tomography using SVD algorithm.Chapter 2 describes the mathematical base of SVD method together with ML-EM method that is used for our prototype system as a standard.In tomography,the relation between the line-integrated values giand local emissionεi on i-th grid is expressed asg=hε,where h is a matrix.The tomography reconstruction can be performed if the inverse relation is obtained.The SVD is used to obtain the relation by factorizing the matrix h.More precisely saying,the emission can be obtained with a least square method to minimize the modified x2-function Φ,with assuming Φ=Ⅱ g-hεⅡ/M+γⅡCεⅡ2,where y and Ⅱ Ⅱ represent the regularization parameter and the norm,respectively,and C is selected to be the Laplacian matrix here.The

Gastric cancer arising from the remnant stomach after distal gastrectomy:A review

Gastric stump carcinoma was initially reported by Balfore in 1922,and many reports of this disease have since been published. We herein review previous reports of gastric stump carcinoma with respect to epidemiology,carcinogenesis,Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection,Epstein-Barr virus infection,clinicopathologic characteristics and endoscopic treatment. In particular,it is noteworthy that no prognostic differences are observed between gastric stump carcinoma and primary upper third gastric cancer. In addition,endoscopic submucosal dissection has recently been used to treat gastric stump carcinoma in the early stage. In contrast,many issues concerning gastric stump carcinoma remain to be clarified,including molecular biological characteristics and the carcinogenesis of H.pylori infection.We herein review the previous pertinent literature and summarize the characteristics of gastric stump carcinoma reported to date.

Franson interference can be used to test the nonlocal features of energy-time entanglement and has become a standard in quantum physics.However,most of the previous Franson interference experiments were demonstrated in the time domain,and the spectral properties of Franson interference have not been fully explored.Here,we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate spectrally resolved Franson interference using biphotons with different correlations,including positive correlation,negative correlation,and non-correlation.It is found that the joint spectral intensities of the biphotons can be modulated along both the signal and idler directions,which has potential applications in generating high-dimensional frequency entanglement and time-frequency grid states.This work may provide a new perspective for understanding the spectral-temporal properties of the Franson interferometer.

Numerical model of local scour considering the unsteady sediment inflow and sediment sorting: Application to scour upstream of slit weir

The current study proposes a novel framework for the numerical model for estimating the temporal scour considering unsteady sediment inflow and the sediment sorting process. The framework was applied to local scour upstream of a slit weir. The scour model is based on an ordinary nonlinear differential equation derived from sediment continuity and scour rate equations. A one-dimensional(1-D)Boussinesq-type model coupled with nonequilibrium sediment transport was incorporated in the scour model to consider unsteady sediment inflow. In addition, a mixing layer approach was incorporated to determine temporal variations in particle size in the scour hole. The proposed framework was validated using scour experiments conducted under conditions that include non-uniform sediment, live-bed scour,and unsteady flow rate. The simulation results showed satisfactory agreement with experimental results for the scour upstream of a slit weir. The proposed model appropriately explained the hysteresis process for flow unsteadiness, refilling process for live-bed scour, and armoring process for non-uniform sediments. In addition, the model framework proposed in the current study is applicable to local scour around other hydraulic structures(e.g., bridge piers) upon establishing the scour rate equation. Therefore, the current study provides a novel approach for modeling temporal scour that is required to consider unsteady sediment inflow and sediment sorting.

Indocyanine green plasma clearance rate and 99mTc-galactosyl human serum albumin single-photon emission computed tomography evaluated preoperative remnant liver

BACKGROUND Preoperative evaluation of future remnant liver reserves is important for safe hepatectomy.If the remnant is small,preoperative portal vein embolization(PVE)is useful.Liver volume analysis has been the primary method of preoperative evaluation,although functional examination may be more accurate.We have used the functional evaluation liver using the indocyanine green plasma clearance rate(KICG)and 99mTc-galactosyl human serum albumin single-photon emission computed tomography(99mTc-GSA SPECT)for safe hepatectomy.AIM To analyze the safety of our institution’s system for evaluating the remnant liver reserve.METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the records of 23 patients who underwent preoperative PVE.Two types of remnant liver KICG were defined as follows:Anatomical volume remnant KICG(a-rem-KICG),determined as the remnant liver anatomical volume rate×KICG;and functional volume remnant KICG(frem-KICG),determined as the remnant liver functional volume rate based on 99mTc-GSA SPECT×KICG.If either of the remnant liver KICGs were>0.05,a hepatectomy was performed.Perioperative factors were analyzed.We defined the marginal group as patients with a-rem-KICG of0.05 and compared the postoperative outcomes between the marginal and not marginal(both a-rem-KICG and f-rem-KICG>0.05)groups.RESULTS All 23 patients underwent planned hepatectomies.Right hepatectomy,right trisectionectomy and left trisectionectomy were in 16,6 and 1 cases,respectively.The mean of blood loss and operative time were 576 mL and 474 min,respectively.The increased amount of frem-KICG was significantly larger than that of a-rem-KICG after PVE(0.034 vs 0.012,P=0.0273).The not marginal and marginal groups had 17(73.9%)and 6(26.1%)patients,respectively.The complications of Clavian-Dindo classification grade II or higher and post-hepatectomy liver failure were observed in six(26.1%)and one(grade A,4.3%)patient,respectively.The 90-d mortality was zero.The marginal group had no significant difference in postoperative outcomes

Surgical outcome comparisons of multifocal IOLs of Lentis Comfort LS-313 MF15 and Tecnis Eyhance DIB00V

AIM:To compare the surgical outcomes of a multifocal intraocular lens(IOL;Lentis Comfort LS-313 MF15)with those of an enhanced monofocal IOL(Tecnis Eyhance DIB00V).METHODS:This retrospective study included patients who underwent cataract surgery with LS-313 MF15 or Eyhance IOL implantation.Data regarding patient demographics,surgical records,and ophthalmic examination before the cataract surgery and one and three months postoperatively were collected.Visual acuities,refractive values,defocus curves,contrast sensitivities and subjective symptoms were evaluated.RESULTS:Among the 71 eyes(47 patients)included in this study,32 eyes(20 patients)underwent LS-313 MF15 IOL implantation,and 39 eyes(27 patients)underwent Eyhance IOL implantation.No significant differences were observed in age,axial length,or refractive error between the two groups preoperatively.Furthermore,the distancecorrected and uncorrected distance visual acuities one month postoperatively did not differ between the groups,and both groups had sufficient visual acuities at the distances of 5,1 m,70,50,and 30 cm.Other ophthalmic data,including subjective symptoms based on the 14-item Visual Function Index Questionnaire,monocular defocus curves,contrast sensitivities,and halo and glare,did not differ between the groups three months postoperatively.Moreover,both groups had good outcomes.The spherical equivalent one month postoperatively was significantly myopic in the LS-313 MF15 group compared with that in the Eyhance group(P=0.033);however,this difference was not observed three months postoperatively(P=0.471).CONCLUSION:Comparison of the surgical outcomes of LS-313 MF15 with those of Eyhance with different optical properties reveal that both IOLs show good postoperative outcomes,with no significant differences being noted between the two IOLs.

An integrated model to simulate sown area changes for major crops at a global scale

Dynamics of land use systems have attracted much attention from scientists around the world due to their ecological and socio-economic implications. An integrated model to dynamically simulate future changes in sown areas of four major crops (rice, maize, wheat and soybean) on a global scale is pre- sented. To do so, a crop choice model was developed on the basis of Multinomial Logit (Logit) model to model land users' decisions on crop choices among a set of available alternatives with using a crop utility function. A GIS-based Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model was adopted to simulate the crop yields under a given geophysical environment and farming management conditions, while the International Food Policy and Agricultural Simulation (IFPSIM) model was utilized to estimate crop price in the international market. The crop choice model was linked with the GIS-based EPIC model and the IFPSIM model through data exchange. This integrated model was then validated against the FAO statistical data in 2001-2003 and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) global land cover product in 2001. Both validation approaches indicated reliability of the model for ad- dressing the dynamics in agricultural land use and its capability for long-term scenario analysis. Finally, the model application was designed to run over a time period of 30 a, taking the year 2000 as baseline. The model outcomes can help understand and explain the causes, locations and consequences of land use changes, and provide support for land use planning and policy making.

With the progress in nanotechnology,the importance of nanodimensional standards is increasing.Realizing nanodimensional standards requires multiple types of high-precision microscopy techniques.The National Metrology Institute of Japan(NMIJ),one of the research domains in the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology(AIST),is developing nanodimensional standards using atomic force,transmission electron,and scanning electron microscopes.The current status of nanodimensional standards in NMIJ is introduced herein.

Crowd evacuation of pairs of pedestrians

The crowd evacuation of pairs of pedestrians(i.***.pairs consisting of a parent and a child)is numerically investigated.Here,it is assumed that all pedestrians have their own partners,and move randomly inside the bounded domain of the right-hand room as an initial state.All pedestrians start their evacuations after they contact their partners.The evacuations are completed by the transfer of all the pairs from the right-hand room to the left-hand room through an exit.A frozen swarm tends to appear in the right-hand room as the total number of pedestrians increases.The frozen swarm moves without changing its form,unless it is dissolved by a strong collision with a pair of pedestrians that comes back from the left-hand room by accident.Finally,the evacuation speed also depends on the area of the Escape Zone,whereas an obstacle placed in front of an exit also changes the speed of the evacuation in accordance with the type of motion of the children.
