External apical root resorption and the release of interleukin-6 in the gingival crevucular fluid induced by a self-ligating system

The aim of this study was to investigate the amount of external apical root resorption (EARR) and the release of interleukin (IL)-6 in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in subjects treated with a low-force low-friction system. Sixty patients were assigned to two groups of thirty patients for each: one group received treatment with self-ligating brackets and the other with conventional ligated edgewise brackets. All patients were treated with extraction of the maxillary first premolars. The EARR of the maxillary central incisors was evaluated on the periapical radiographs and cephalograms, taken before and after orthodontic treatment. The GCF was also collected non-invasively from the mesial and distal sides of central incisors by using filter paper strips before and after orthodontic treatment. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits were used to determine the IL-6 levels in the GCF samples. A significant difference was found in the amount of EARR between the patients with self-ligating brackets and conventional brackets. The mean amount of EARR was significantly lower for self-ligating brackets than conventional brackets (p < 0.05). The GCF levels of IL-6 for the patients with self-ligating brackets appliance were significantly lower than for those with the conventional brackets (p < 0.05). These results show that the mean amount of EARR and the GCF levels of IL-6 were significantly lower in the patients treated using low-force low-friction appliances than conventional brackets. Therefore, self-ligating brackets may be a useful system for reducing inflammation and EARR.

Numerical Simulation of Deflecting Flow in a Symmetric Enlarged Channel

Numerical results of three-dimensional separated flow and heat transfer in a rectangular channel with a sudden expansion are presented in this paper. Numerical simulations of Navier-Stokes and energy equations are carried out using the finite difference method. The results of three-dimensional calculations are compared with the two-dimensional ones, and effects of the aspect ratio of channel upon the flow are shown. The transition from symmetric to asymmetric flow appears at lower Reynolds number as increasing the aspect ratio. The details of local heat transfer characteristics in two different separated flow regions on two downstream walls are clarified. Two-dimensionality of the flow and heat transfer almost disappears for the aspect ratio considered.

Experiment on a Semi-Active In-Car Crib with Joint Application of Regular and Inverted Pendulum Mechanisms Using Scale Model

To reduce the collision shock and risk of injury to an infant in an in-car crib(or in a child safety bed)during a car crash,it is necessary to limit the force acting on the crib below a certain allowable *** realize this objective,we propose a semi-active in-car crib system with the joint application of regular and inverted pendulum *** crib is supported by arms similar to a pendulum,and the pendulum system itself is supported by arms similar to an inverted *** addition,the arm acting as a regular pendulum is joined with the arm acting as an inverted pendulum through a linking mechanism for simplicity,and the friction torque of the joint connecting the base and the latter arm is controlled using a brake mechanism,which enables the proposed in-car crib to gradually increase the deceleration of the crib and maintain it at around the target *** system not only reduces the impulsive force but also transfers the force to the infant′s back using a spin control system,i.e.,the impulse force is made to act perpendicularly on the *** spin control system was developed in our previous *** present work focuses on the acceleration control system.A semi-active control law with acceleration feedback is introduced using the sliding mode control ***,a feedback system of the crib acceleration relative to the vehicle is proposed for the high-vibrational ***,a control experiment using scale model is conducted to confirm the effectiveness,and some results are reported.

An effective scatter correction method based on single scatter simulation for a 3D whole-body PET scanner

Hamamatsu SHR74000 is a newly designed full three-dimensional （3D） whole body positron emission tomography （PET） scanner with small crystal size and large field of view （FOV）.With the improvement of sensitivity,the scatter events increase significantly at the same time,especially for large *** Carlo simulations help us to understand the scatter phenomena and provide good references for scatter correction. In this paper,we introduce an effective scatter correction method based on single scatter simulation for the new PET scanner,which accounts for the full 3D scatter *** the results from Monte Carlo simulations,we implement a new scale method with special concentration on scatter events from outside the axial FOV and multiple scatter *** effects of scatter correction are investigated and evaluated by phantom experiments;the results show good improvements in quantitative accuracy and contrast of the images,even for large objects.

A fast convergence fourth-order Vlasov model for Hall thruster ionization oscillation analyses

A 1D1 V hybrid Vlasov-fluid model was developed for this study to elucidate discharge current oscillations of Hall thrusters(HTs).The Vlasov equation for ions velocity distribution function with ionization source term is solved using a constrained interpolation profile conservative semiLagrangian *** fourth-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory(4 th WENO)limiter is applied to the first derivative value to minimize numerical oscillation in the discharge oscillation *** fourth-order accuracy is verified through a 1 D scalar test *** and high-resolution features of the Vlasov model are confirmed by simulating the test cases of the Vlasov–Poisson system and by comparing the results with a particle-in-cell(PIC)method.A1 D1 V HT simulation is performed through the hybrid Vlasov *** ionization oscillation is *** oscillation amplitude and plasma density are compared with those obtained from a hybrid PIC *** comparison indicates that the hybrid Vlasov-fluid model yields noiseless results and that the steady-state waveform is calculable in a short time period.

Dissipative structure for symmetric hyperbolic systems with memory

We study symmetric hyperbolic systems with memory-type dissipation and investigate their dissipative *** treat two cases:memory-type diffusion and memory-type relaxation,and observe that the dissipative structures of these two cases are essentially ***,we show that the dissipative structure of the system with memory-type diffusion is of the standard type,while that of the system with memory-type relaxation is of the regularity-loss type.

New Aspects in the Chemistry of Three-membered Ring Compounds Containing a Highly Coordinate Main Group Element

The title compounds were synthesized by taking advantage of the Martin ligand. Their structures were determined by X-ray crystallography. Pentacoordinate thiasiliranides were hydrolyzed to give the corresponding thiol. Pentacoordinate chalcogenaphosphiranes were found to have polar P-chalcogen bonds, which were confirmed by their reactions with CF3SO3Me to give the corresponding 1-（methylchalcogena）alkylphosphonium triflates and by the solvent-dependent NMR studies.

Approaches to Stable Operation of Shaftless Centrifugal Pump

The shaft-less impeller of the centrifugal pump, which is driven by the magnetic induction, was developed. Theimpeller rotates under the floating condition without any control device. The floating condition of the impeller isrealized by utilizing the pressure in pump casing. The pump performance and the rotational behavior of the impellerwere investigated experimentally. It has found that the floating position of the impeller become quite unstablein a partial flow rate operation. And the pressure distribution at the casing wall affects the rotational posture ofthe impeller. This paper presents the effect of the casing treatment on the rotational posture of the impeller and thepressure distribution. The reasonable casing treatment is available for the stable rotational posture of the impeller.

Preventive approach against drug-induced pulmonary fibrosis through the suppression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition

A number of drugs induce pulmonary injury and subsequently lead to serious lung diseases such as pulmonary fibrosis as the adverse drug ***,an effective preventive approach against drug-induced pulmonary fibrosis has not been established due to poor understanding of common preventive targets in a variety of drugs showing pulmonary ***-mesenchymal transition(EMT),a cellular phenotypic change of the epithelial to mesenchymal state,contributes to the development of pulmonary fibrosis through the conversion of damaged alveolar epithelium into *** several drugs with pulmonary toxicity have been reported to induce EMT,EMT serves as a bridge between the drugs and pulmonary *** evidence supports the potential of EMT as a preventive target against drug-induced pulmonary ***,since there are mechanistic differences between the main pharmacological effect and EMT induced by the drug,prevention based on EMT suppression would be possible and would contribute to continuous clinical treatment with the drug to avoid EMT-mediated serious pulmonary ***,targeting EMT seems to be adequate for exerting a preventive effect since EMT in damaged alveolar epithelial cells occurs prior to the development of the pathophysiological state of the whole lung in a bleomycin-induced lung injury rat *** viewpoint deals with the benefits and perspectives of preventive approaches against druginduced pulmonary fibrosis through the suppression of EMT,which has rarely been addressed.

Phase Behavior and Crystal Structure of Perovskite-Type Rare Earth Complex Oxides

Several compounds of rare earth complex oxides containing manganese and titanium were synthesized in Ar, and their crystal structures were analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction data and Rietveld method. Structures of A0.67Ln0.33 Mn0.33Ti0.6703（A = Ca or Sr and Ln = rare earth） were found to have orthorhombic symmetry with the space group Pnrna, and their interatomic distances and bond angles were obtained. This space group was also derived from electron microscopic study. Electrical conductivity of Cao.67Ln0.33Mn0.33Ti0.6703 for several rare earth elements showed a semiconducting property with the activation energy of 0.4 eV. Some of these compounds of the strontium system show the antiferromagnetic properties below 10 K.
