We present a rare case of synchronous mucinous borderline tumor of the ovary and low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN). We performed a left adnexectomy to diagnose the left ovarian borderline malignancy and an ileostomy because of the swollen appendix during the operation. It was diagnosed as left ovarian mucinous borderline malignancy and LAMN. LAMN causes peritoneal dissemination, ovarian metastasis, and peritoneal pseudomyxoma. The appendix and ovary are close to each other anatomically and can metastasize if there is a tumor in either. For ovarian mucinous tumors, it is necessary to search the gastrointestinal tract, especially the appendix, as the primary lesion. For appendix tumors, it is necessary to search for the ovary. Since LAMN may be associated with borderline ovarian malignancies, as in this case, there is a possibility of the duplication of tumors when searching for ovarian mucinous tumors as the primary tumor and if ovarian tumors are found. Since LAMN and mucinous ovarian tumors have similar histological features, immunohistochemical staining is useful for their differentiation because they show different immunostaining patterns.

PV modules are used as stand alone power sources for agricultural equipments such as lifting pumps in farms, where the power infrastructure is not yet improved. In order to expand the agricultural use of PV module, the cost of PV generation should be reduced. In this paper, the power output performance of a commercial PV module was improved by using a sunlight concentrator that could be assembled inexpensively and a simple sun-tracking method.

The formation and control of a room-temperature magnetic order in two- dimensional （2D） materials is a challenging quest for the advent of innovative magnetic- and spintronic-based technologies. To date, edge magnetism in 2D materials has been experimentally observed in hydrogen （H）-terminated graphene nanoribbons （GNRs） and graphene nanomeshes （GNMs）, but the measured magnetization remains far too small to allow envisioning practical applications. Herein, we report experimental evidences of large room-temperature edge ferromagnetism （FM） obtained from oxygen （O）-terminated zigzag pore edges of few-layer black phosphorus （P） nanomeshes （BPNMs）. The magnetization values per unit area are -100 times larger than those reported for H-terminated GNMs, while the magnetism is absent for H-terminated BPNMs. The magnetization measurements and the first-principles simulations suggest that the origin of such a magnetic order could stem from ferromagnetic spin coupling between edge P with O atoms, resulting in a strong spin localization at the edge valence band, and from uniform oxidation of full pore edges over a large area and interlayer spin interaction. Our findings pave the way for realizing high-efficiency 2D flexible magnetic and spintronic devices without the use of rare magnetic elements.

Effects of Heavy Metal Pollution of Apple Orchard Surface Soils Associated with Past Use of Metal-Based Pesticides on Soil Microbial Biomass and Microbial Communities

Apple orchard surface soils in Japan are polluted with copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and arsenic (As) due to long-term use of metal-based pesticides. We investigated the effects of heavy metals accumulated in the surface soils in apple orchards on the microbial biomass and the microbial communities. Soil samples were taken from a chestnut orchard (unpolluted control) and five apple orchards with different degrees of heavy metal pollution. Total concentrations of Cu, Pb, and As in soil ranged from 29 to 931 mg/kg, 35 to 771 mg/kg, and 11 to 198 mg/kg, respectively. The amount of microbial biomass carbon expressed on a soil organic carbon basis decreased with increasing concentrations of heavy metals. Thus, the heavy metals that accumulated in apple orchard surface soils had adverse effects on the soil microbial biomass. The analysis of phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) composition indicated that the microbial community structure had changed because of the pesticide-derived heavy metals in soil. The relative abundance of gram-positive bacterial marker PLFAs increased and that of fungal marker PLFA decreased with increasing concentrations of heavy metals in soil. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoreses targeting the 16S ribosomal RNA gene of bacteria and the 18S ribosomal RNA gene of fungi also showed shifts in the composition of bacterial and fungal communities induced by soil pollution with heavy metals. However, the diversity of microbial communities was not significantly affected by the heavy metal pollution. This was attributable to the adaptation of the microbial communities in apple orchard surface soils to heavy metals derived from previously used pesticides.

Exploring Passive Exoskeleton-Induced Changes in Lumbar Muscle Activity

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of using a passive exoskeleton on lumbar muscle activity during lifting movements, and to determine whether muscle activity remains altered after exoskeleton removal. This study sought to identify the potential risks and benefits associated with the use of passive exoskeletons for the prevention and treatment of low back pain. Methods: Eighteen healthy adult participants lifted a 10 kg suitcase while wearing a passive exoskeleton. Muscle activity and postures were measured during lifting and before, during, and after exoskeleton use. This study examined whether the reduced muscle activity observed during exoskeleton use persisted after exoskeleton removal. Muscle activity was assessed using electromyography and postures were recorded using reflective markers and a camera. Results: The study found that Lumbar muscle activity decreased significantly (approximately 40%) during exoskeleton use compared to that without exoskeleton use. Importantly, lumbar muscle activity remained low after exoskeleton removal, at levels similar to those observed during exoskeleton use. This suggests that individuals adapted to the exoskeleton support and maintained altered muscle control, even without the exoskeleton. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that passive exoskeletons significantly reduce lumbar muscle activity during lifting tasks, and that this altered muscle control persists after exoskeleton removal. These findings contribute to the understanding of the risks and benefits of passive exoskeletons, potentially aiding their development and informing their use in the prevention and treatment of low back pain.

A Patient with Tubo-Ovarian Abscess with Endometriosis after Transvaginal Oocyte Retrieval

Ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval is a standard procedure for ovum pick up (OPU) during in vitro?fertilization. Possible complications include tubo-ovarian abscesses (TOAs) in the fallopian tubes, and endometriosis may be associated with increasing?the severity of pelvic infection. A 35-year-old?woman who had been treated for infertility and endometriosis presented with abdominal pain that appeared several days after OPU. There were no significant changes in the size of both ovaries and fallopian tubes. A week later, transvaginal echography revealed right oviduct enlargement. Because conservative treatment with antibiotics before this revelation had not been successful, laparoscopy was performed for abscess drainage and/or excision of the adnexa. Intraoperative findings were an abscess in the right adnexa involving the ovary and fallopian tube. Preservation of the right fallopian tube was difficult due to the risk of prolonged infection, and a right appendectomy was performed. The diagnosis was a right TOA. Severe cases of pelvic infection after OPU may cause infertility. The presence of endometriosis may aggravate the infection, but the relationship between the extent of the endometriosis and the severity of the infection is not known. Even if the endometriosis is mild, as it was in this patient, surgical treatment should be considered if a severe infection occurs after OPU and conservative treatment is not effective.
