Genetic and morphological divergence in the purple sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus(Echinodermata,Echinoidea)across the African Mediterranean coast

The present investigation focuses on population structure analysis of the purple sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus across the African Mediterranean coast, with the main aim of assessing the influence of the Siculo-Tunisian Strait on gene flow disruption in this highly dispersive echinoid species. For this purpose, patterns of morphological and genetic variation were assessed among its populations from the western and eastern Mediterranean coasts. A total of 302 specimens from seven Tunisian sites were collected and examined for morphometric variability at twelve morphometric traits. Concordant results, inferred from CDA（canonical discriminant analyses）, pairwise NPMANOVA（non parametric multivariate analysis of variance） comparisons and MDS（multidimensional scaling） plot, unveiled significant inter-population differences in the measured traits among the studied populations. Furthermore, the combined use of the one way ANOSIM（analysis of similarities） and the Discriminant/Hotelling analysis allowed unravelling two morphologically differentiated groups assigned to both western and eastern Mediterranean basins. The SIMPER（similarity percentages） routine analysis showed that total dry weight, test diameter and spine length were major contributors to the morphometric separation between locations and between groups. Pattern of phenotypic divergence discerned in P. lividus across the Siculo-Tunisian Strait is interestingly in congruence with that inferred from the genetic investigation of the purple sea urchin populations from the same region based on the analysis of the mt DNA COI（cytochrome oxidase I） gene in 314 specimens from nineteen locations covering a wider geographic transect, streching westward to the Algerian coast and eastward to the Libyan littoral. Patterns of genetic and morphometric diversity in the marbled crab(Pachygrapsus marmoratus, Brachyura, Grapsidae)populations across the Tunisian coast

The present study reports on population structure analysis of the marbled crab Pachygrapsus marmoratus （Fabricius, 1787） from the Tunisian coast, an appropriate location to study biogeographical processes because of the presence of a well-known discontinuous biogeographic area （the Siculo-Tunisian Strait）. Patterns of morphological and genetic variation of this highly dispersive and continuously distributed decapod species were assessed among its geographically close populations which cover almost the entire Tunisian coastline. A total of 386 specimens from nine sites were collected and examined for morphometric variability at 14 morphometric traits. The results of multivariate analyses of linear morphometric traits showed the existence of sexual dimorphism in this species by PERMANOVA （Permutational multivariate analysis of variance）. In addition, both CDA （Canonical discriminant analysis） and NPMANOVA （Non parametric MANOVA test） analyses revealed statistically significant differences among the studied locations for both sexes. Overall, the outcome of CDA analysis showed that over 87% of individuals could be assigned correctly to three regional groups in both sexes （North, Center and South）. Specifically, SIMPER （Similarity Percentages） analysis showed that carapace length, carapace width and merus length were major contributors to the morphometric separation between populations. The pattern of phenotypic variation suggested by morphometric analyses was found to be highly discordant with that suggested by the analysis of a mitochondrial marker （cytochrome oxidase I, COI）. Indeed, the results inferred from restriction fragment analysis of the COI in 180 crabs, suggested high genetic homogeneity. Very low levels of haplotype diversity （h） were found in almost all the studied populations, associated with non significant genetic distances for nearly all population comparisons. Analysis of Genetic Diversity and Relationships in a Tunisian Fig （Ficus carica） Germplasm Collection by Random Amplified Microsatellite Polymorphisms

The random amplified mirosatellite polymorphism method was performed in a set of Tunisian fig landraces using eighteen primer combinations. A total of sixty three random amplified microsatellite polymorphism （RAMPO） markers were scored and used either to assess the genetic diversity in these cultivars or to detect cases of mislabeling. Opportunely, data proved that the designed procedure constitutes an attractive and fast method with low costs and prevents radio exposure. As a result, we have identified the primer combinations that are the most efficient to detect genetic polymorphism in this crop. Therefore, the derived unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic averages （UPGMA） dendrogram illustrates the genetic divergence among the landraces studied and exhibits a typically continuous variation. Moreover, no evident correlation between the sexes of trees was observed. In addition, using these markers, discrimination between landraces has been achieved. Thus, random amplified mirosatellite polymor- phism is proved to be powerful for characterizing the local fig germplasm.

Testicular Synovial Sarcoma:A Case Report

This paper reports a case of testicular synovial sarcoma with molecular genetic analysis.A 24-year-old male presented with painless scrotal *** showed a heterogeneous mass of 66 mm×34 mm in size involving the inguinal *** examination of a surgical biopsy showed a gradeⅢmonophasic growth pattern of spindle cell *** analyses indicated positive staining for pancytokeratine and epithelial membrane *** analysis showed the presence of CYT-SSX1 mutation,and CT scan showed non-specific pleural micro-nodules with a size of 7.5 *** patient had an extended left orchidectomy but was lost to follow-up for 1 year.A local recurrent scrotal mass of 32 mm×25 mm,multiple inguinal lymph nodes,and increased pleural nodules,which were confirmed by histological examination,were treated with three cycles of adriamycine and ifosfamide chemotherapy,surgical resection,and radiotherapy with complete *** 3 months,the patient developed local recurrence and pulmonary metastases that did not respond to second-line chemotherapy based on gemcitabine and *** patient had dyspnea at the time of this writing and chest pain,and is under third-line chemotherapy based on Deticene after 30 months of following *** patient died on November 16,2012 after a resperatory failure and malignant plural effusion. Synovial sarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue tumor and it should be aggressively treated to improve *** our patient has shown numerous factors of bad prognosis,he has had a relatively long survival time.

Antioxidant antileishmanial cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities of a local plant Myrtus nivellei from Algeria Sahara

Objective: To study the phytochemical constituents and in vitro biological activities of hydromethanolic extract and fractions from Algerian Sahara Myrtus nivellei(M. nivellei)collected in Hoggar region and to identify the active fraction that can act as an alternative of commonly used antibiotics and as antileishmanial or antioxidant ***: Phytochemical screening of M. nivellei aerial parts was realised according to the literature. Extract was firstly prepared by using aqueous methanol then fractionated with ethyl acetate and butanol solvents. Total phenolics, tannis and flavonoids, of the hydromethanolic extract and their fractions were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method as gallic acid equivalents and by aluminium chloride as rutin equivalent *** and fractions were tested for their antimicrobial and antiparasital activities against standard bacteria using agar diffusion method and two kinds of leishmania visceral and cutaneous. The antioxidant activities were realized using phosphomolybdenum, FRAP and DPPH ***: Preliminary phytochemical screening exhibited the presence of flavonoids,tannins, saponins, and alkaloids. The experimental results showed that plant extract and fractions were high in phenolic compounds and exhibited an important role as antioxidant,antimicrobial and had a moderate antileishmanial ***: These observations lead us toward more studies in this field, so that we can get more benefits from our local Algerian medicinal plants.

Localized magnetization reversal processes in cobalt nanorods with different aspect ratios

We present results of the synthesis of cobalt nanorods using the polyol process and the mechanism of magnetization reversal. We show that the nucleation step is significantly dependent on the nature of the ruthenium chloride used as the nucleating agent. This allows varying the diameter and aspect ratio of the cobalt nanorods independently. Co nanorods with aspect ratio, mean diameter, and mean length in the ranges ARm =3-16, Din= 7-25 nm, and Lm=30-300 nm, respectively, were produced using this method. X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy showed that a strong discrepancy between the structural coherence and morphological aspect ratio can exist because of stacking faults. The coercivity of assemblies of different nanorods was systematically measured, and the highest values were obtained for the smallest diameter and the largest structural coherence length. Micromagnetic simulations were performed to account for the dependence of the coercive field on the diameter. An important observation is that simple coherent magnetization rotation models do not apply to these magnetic nano-objects. Even for very small diameters （Dm = 5-10 nm） well below the theoretical coherent diameter Dcoh（CO）= 24 nm, we observed inhomogeneous reversal modes dominated by nucleation at the rod edges or at structural defects such as stacking faults. We conclude that, in order to produce high-coercivity materials based on nanowires, moderate aspect ratios of 5-10 are sufficient for providing a structural coherence similar to the morphological aspect ratio. Thus, the first priority should be to avoid the formation of stacking faults within the Co nanowires.

Buerger’s Disease and Fitness for Work in a Flight Personnel: A Case Report

Buerger’s disease, also called thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO), is an inflammatory disease affecting small and medium size blood vessels of the limbs. Several risk factors are strongly associated with this disease. In fact, heavy smokers represent 99% of patients diagnosed with Buerger’s disease and smoking cessation can slow down the progression of the pathology. Ulcers and gangrene are very common complications and TAO may also cause a vasculitis as well as ischemic damage to the distal part of the limbs that can eventually lead to limb amputation. Here, we report the case of a 43 years old patient, a flight personnel working in a Tunisian airline company who consults for a lesion of the left toe that appeared 2 weeks ago. He is a chronic inveterate smoker with 36 pack-years. The diagnosis of TAO was made based on the clinical presentation and the results of the Doppler Ultrasound of the left toe. This disease has a major impact on the quality of life due to the risk of necrotic ulcers and amputation. Navigation is a profession that requires a high level of physical and mental fitness. According to the international and Tunisian standards, the applicant or the holder of medical certificate must not have a cardiovascular condition that may affect the safety of the exercise.

Effect of Salinity on Germination,Seedling Growth and Acid Phosphatase Activity in Lettuce

The impact of salt stress (NaCl 100 mM) on two lettuce varieties Romaine and Vista was conducted at germination and early seedling stages. The seeds of lettuce varieties were provided by the Seed Laboratory of Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture. The seeds were germinated in Petri dishes with double filter paper in distilled water (control) or NaCl solution (100 mM) for 5 days. The result showed that salinity significantly affected percentage and rate of germination in Vista variety but 100% of germination was found in Romaine. Length and fresh weight of root and shoot were reduced significantly with salt treatment in two lettuce varieties. Regarding biochemical analysis, acid phosphatase activity in root increased in Romaine and decreased in Vista. In shoot, this activity showed no difference with the control in the two varieties. However in cotyledons, and during 24 hours after germination, salinity decreased acid phosphatase activity in both varieties whereas in the later hours (48 - 96 h) this activity reached the value of the control in Romaine and Vista.
