Application and Validation of a Multi-block Constitutive Model at Landslides of the Wenchuan Earthquake

A multi-block model and a corresponding computer program have been developed which predict the kinematics of ***,a unique event for studying different models simulating the triggering and movement of landslides is the 2008Wenchuan earthquake in the mountainous region in sichuan Province of China,which caused a large number of rapid *** purpose of the paper is two-fold:(a)to propose and incorporate into the multi-block model constitutive relations predicting soil response along slip surfaces,and(b)to apply the multi-block model with the constitutive relations at landslides triggered by the Wenchuan *** proposed constitutive equations predict the shape of the shear stress-displacement response measured in ring shear *** the application,four landslides caused by the Wenchuan earthquake were *** in one of these landslides the shear resistance-displacement response along the slip surface has been measured in laboratory *** this landslide,the triggering and movement of the landslide was *** the other landslides,back analyses were performed and it was observed that the multi-block model predicted reasonably well the final configuration of all *** addition,as the measured and back-estimated total friction angle of all landslides was less than 180,and the materials along the slip surface were sandy,it is inferred that some,or all of the slip surface during these slides was sheared in an undrained manner and excess pore pressures generated during sliding played a key role in the triggering and movement of these ***,the paper(A)proposed and validated a multi-block constitutive model which can be applied to predict the triggering and movement of earthquake-induced slides and(B)by analyzing four landslides of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake,it concludes that some,or all of the slip surface during these slides,was sheared in an undrained manner and excess pore pressures generated during s

Background: The well-rounded development of the child, including physical, cognitive, emotional, and social health, may be the most efficient route to well-being and academic success. The primary goal was to investigate the feasibility of implementing a 12-week structured program of physical activity(PA) incorporating cognitive, social, and emotional elements in preschool. Additionally, this study, using a within-subject design,examined the acute effects of a PA session on classroom engagement and changes on perceived competence and peer acceptance from the first to the last week of the ***: Twenty-seven preschoolers(mean age = 4.2 years) completed the Pictorial scale of Perceived Competence and social Acceptance for Young Children before and after a twice-weekly PA program. Unobtrusive classroom observations were conducted for verbal, social, and affective engagement during the first and last week of the program, both following a structured PA session(experimental day) and on a day without PA(control day). Treatment fidelity was monitored to ensure that the intervention was delivered as ***: The children exhibited longer periods of verbal and social engagement during classroom periods that followed PA sessions than on non-PA days. Children also expressed more positive affect following PA sessions during the last week of the PA program. Despite high baseline scores,perceptions of general competence increased meaningfully(η2= 0.15, p = 0.05), driven by increase in perceptions of cognitive competence(η2= 0.15,p = 0.06).Conclusion: This study demonstrates the feasibility of providing structured PA program to preschoolers. Moreover, these initial findings suggest that purposely designed, structured PA may help advance the social–emotional engagement and perceived competence of preschool children.

surveillance to detect cancer recurrence is an important part of care for cancer *** this paper we discuss the design of optimal strategies for early detection of disease recurrence based on each patient's distinct biomarker trajectory and periodically updated risk estimated in the setting of a prospective cohort *** adopt a latent class joint model which considers a longitudinal biomarker process and an event process jointly,to address heterogeneity of patients and disease,to discover distinct biomarker trajectory patterns,to classify patients into different risk groups,and to predict the risk of disease *** model is used to develop a monitoring strategy that dynamically modifies the monitoring intervals according to patients' current risk derived from periodically updated biomarker measurements and other indicators of disease *** optimal biomarker assessment time is derived using a utility *** develop an algorithm to apply the proposed strategy to monitoring of new patients after initial *** illustrate the models and the derivation of the optimal strategy using simulated data from monitoring prostate cancer recurrence over a 5-year period.

Currently,there are two types of defect detection systems used to monitor the health of freight railcar bearings in service:wayside hot-box detection systems and trackside acoustic detection *** systems have proven to be inefficient in accurately determining bearing health,especially in the early stages of defect *** that end,a prototype onboard bearing condition monitoring system has been developed and validated through extensive laboratory testing and a designated field test in 2015 at the Transportation Technology Center,*** Pueblo,*** devised system can accurately and reliably characterize the health of bearings based on developed vibration thresholds and can identify defective taperedroller bearing components with defect areas smaller than 12.9 cm2 while in service.

This study numerically and experimentally investigates the effects of wave loads on a monopile-type offshore wind turbine placed on a 1:25 slope at different water depths as well as the effect of choosing different turbulence models on the efficiency of the numerical *** numerical model adopts a two-phase flow by solving Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier−stokes(URANs)equations using the Volume Of Fluid(VOF)method and three differentk-􀀀ωturbulence *** environmental conditions from the East China sea are *** wave run-up and the wave loads applied on the monopile are investigated and compared with relevant experimental data as well as with mathematical predictions based on relevant *** numerical model is well validated against the experimental data at model *** use of different turbulence models results in different predictions on the wave height but less differences on the wave *** baseline k-􀀀ωturbulence model and shear-stress Transport(ssT)k-􀀀ωturbulence model exhibit better performance on the prediction of hydrodynamic load,at a model-scale water depth of 0.42 m,while the laminar model provides better results for large water *** ssT turbulence model performs better in predicting wave run-up for water depth 0.42 m,while the laminar model and standard k-􀀀ωmodel perform better at water depth 0.52 m and 0.62 m,respectively.

Despite known effects of urban heat island(UHI)on building energy consumption such as increased cooling energy demand,typical building energy simulation(BEs)practices lack a standardized approach to incorporate UHI into building energy *** seasonal and diurnal variation of UHI makes the task of incorporating UHI into BEs an especially challenging task,often limited by the availability of detailed hourly temperature data at building *** paper addresses the temporal variation of UHI by deriving four normalized UHI indicators that can successfully capture the seasonal and diurnal variation of *** accuracy of these indicators was established across four climate types including hot and humid(Miami,FL),hot and dry(Los Angeles,CA),cold and dry(Denver,CO),and cold and humid(Chicago,IL),and three building types including office,hospital,and *** four indicators are mean summer daytime UHI,mean summer nighttime UHI,mean winter daytime UHI,and mean winter nighttime UHI,which can accurately predict cooling,heating,and annual energy consumption with mean relative error of less than 1%.Not only do these indicators simplify the application of UHI to BEs but also,they provide a new paradigm for UHI data collection,storage,and usage,specifically for the purpose of BEs.
