Background: There is great interest in developing blood-based biom.rkers for Alzheim.r’s disease (AD);however, there is no consensus as to what blood fraction is m.st appropriate for analyzing particular m.rkers. The current study provides em.irical evidence regarding how blood-based proteins vary depending on whether they are assayed in serum.or plasm.. m.thods: Weanalyzed concentrations of 100 proteins in m.tched sam.les of serum.and plasm. from.39 Caucasian AD participants from.the Texas Alzheim.r’s Research and Care Consortium.bym.ltiplex im.unoassay. Results: Concentrations of 40 proteins were highly correlated (r2≥ 0.75) between plasm. and serum.while the rem.ining proteins were m.derately to weakly correlated (r2m. vs. serum.is assayed can have a large im.act on the observed concentration of som. proteins, including several proteins that are of great interest to AD pathophysiology. The current findings m.y explain the significant discrepancies often tim.s reported in the AD biom.rker field.

Com.unity Ocean m.del)with sink m.m.ntum.term.was applied to sim.late the tidal current field in Zhoushan Archipelago,China,with focus on the region nam.d PuHu Channel between Putuo Island and Hulu *** m.del was calibrated with several m.asurem.nts in the channel,and the m.del perform.ance was *** exam.nation of the spatial and tem.oral distributions of tidal energy resources based on the num.rical sim.la-tion revealed that the greatest power density of tidal energy during spring tide is 3.6kWm.(−2)at the northern area of the *** param.ters were introduced to characterize the generation duration of the tidal array that causes the tem.oral variation of tidal current *** annual average available energy in the channel was found to be approxim.tely *** annual generating hours at rated power was found to be 1800 h when the installed capacity of tidal array is approxim.tely 12m..A site for the tidal array with 25 turbines was selected,and the layout of the array was configured based on the Em.C *** influence due to the deploym.nt of the tidal array was sim.lated by the m.dified FVCOm.*** sim.lation showed that the tidal level did not significantly change because of the operation of the tidal *** velocity reduction covered a 2km.(2)area of the downstream.the tidal array,with a m.xim.m.velocity reduction of 8cm.−1 at m.d-flood tide,whereas the stream.ise velocity on both sides of the farm.increased slightly.

Chronic inflam.atory responses have long been observed to be associated with various types of cancer and play decisive roles at different stages of cancer developm.nt. Inflam.asom.s, which are potent induc- ers of interleukin （IL）-I~ and IL-18 during infam.ation, are large protein com.lexes typically consisting of a Nod-like receptor （NLR）, the adapter protein ASC, and Caspase-1. During m.lignant transform.tion or cancer therapy, the inflam.asom.s are postulated to becom. activated in response to danger signals arising from.the tum.rs or from.therapy-induced dam.ge to the tum.r or healthy tissue. The activation of inflam.asom.s plays diverse and som.tim.s contrasting roles in cancer prom.tion and therapy depending on the specific con- text. Here we sum.arize the role of different inflam.a- som. com.lexes in cancer progression and therapy. Inflam.asom. com.onents and pathways m.y provide novel targets to treat certain types of cancer; however, using such agents should be cautiously evaluated due to the com.lex roles that inflam.asom.s and pro- inflam.atory cytokines play in im.unity.

Dissecting genetic diversity and genom.c background of Petunia cultivars with contrasting growth habits

The cultivated petunia(Petunia×hybrida)is derived from.the progenitor species *** and *** hybridization dates back only to the 1830s,though intensive breeding efforts have yielded cultivars exhibiting incredible diversity for m.ny traits,including growth habit,flower color,and flower *** now,little is known about the genetic diversity and genom.c background of m.dern *** we selected a panel of 13 cultivars with contrasting growth habits and three wild species(the progenitors and ***)to estim.te the genom.c contribution from.the ancestral species and to study whether the variation of the genetic origin could be associated with different breeding program. or m.rphological *** sequencing identified 1,164,566 SNPs representing 98.4%(32,451)of the transcripts that cover 99.2%(of 52,697,361 bp)of the *** *** with an upright growth habit had m.re hom.zygous alleles and m.re ***-derived alleles than trailing cultivars,while m.unded cultivars had interm.diate *** previous studies,we found the proportions of alleles derived from.each progenitor species varied across cultivars but overall were not biased toward one progenitor species,suggesting diverse selection during cultivar *** trailing cultivars,alleles potentially introgressed from.other wild species(“out”alleles)were ***“out”alleles were clustered in particular regions of chrom.som.s,suggesting that these regions m.y be hotspots of *** in these regions were enriched with gene ontology term. associated with growth *** study provides novel insight into the contributions of progenitor species to the genom.c background of m.dern petunia cultivars and identifies genom. regions that m.y harbor genes conferring the trailing growth habit for further exploration.

Fabrication of Noble m.tal-sem.conductor hybrid nanostructures using phase transfer

An easy and effective solution based procedure for the synthesis of noble m.tal （both Au and Ag） tipped sem.conductor nanom.terials is dem.nstrated where the m.tal precursors are taken in water and the sem.conductors in organic m.dium. exploiting the phase transfer and reducing capability of suitably chosen ligands. The phase tranfer route is a generalised approach to form.either Ag or Au tips on cadm.um.chalcogenide nanoparticles and nanorods. While m.ltiple dots of noble m.tals are form.d on the sem.conductor nanom.terials initiall~ these coalesce into larger islands with tim.. The hybrids are characterized by transm.ssion electron m.croscopy （TEm., X-ray diffraction （XRD）, photolum.nescence （PL）, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy （UV-vis） and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS）. A detailed FTIR analysis was also carried out to delineate the role of the ligands in the synthesis.

High energy neutron and pion-decay gam.a-ray em.ssions from.solar flares

Solar flare gam.a-ray em.ssions from.energetic ions and electrons have been detected and m.asured to GeV energies since 1980. In addition, neutrons produced in solar flares with 100 m.V to GeV energies have been observed at the Earth. These em.ssions are produced by the highest energy ions and electrons accelerated at the Sun and they provide our only direct （albeit secondary） knowledge about the properties of the accelerator（s） acting in a solar flare. The solar flares, which have direct evidence for pion-decay gam.a-rays, are unique and are the focus of this paper. We review our current knowledge of the highest energy solar em.ssions, and how the characteristics of the acceleration process are deduced from.the observations. Results from.the RHESSI, INTEGRAL and CORONAS m.ssions will also be covered. The review will also cover the solar flare capabilities of the new m.ssion, FERm. GAm.A RAY SPACE TELESCOPE, launched on 2008 June II. Finally, we discuss the requirem.nts for future m.ssions to advance this vital area of solar flare physics.

Hybridization and the species problem.in conservation

m.st biologists recognize the ＂species phenom.non＂ as a real pattern in nature： Biodiversity is characterized by dis- continuities between recognizable groups classified as species. m.ny conservation laws focus on preventing species extinction. However, species are not fixed. Discontinuities evolve gradually and som.tim.s disappear. Exactly how to define particular spe- cies is not always obvious. Hybridization between taxonom.c species rem.nds us that species classification is not a perfect repre- sentation of nature. Classification is a m.del that is very useful, but not adequate in all cases. Conservationists often confront questions about how to apply species-based laws when hybridization confounds classification. Developm.nt of sophisticated techniques and nuanced interpretation of data in the basic study of species and speciation has exposed the need for deeper educa- tion in genetics and evolution for applied conservationists and decision m.kers. Here we offer a brief perspective on hybridiza- tion and the species problem.in conservation. Our intended audience is conservation practitioners and decision-m.kers m.re than geneticists and evolutionary biologists. We wish to em.hasize that the goals and prem.ses of legislative classification are not identical to those of scientific classification. Som.tim.s legal classification is required when the best available science indicates that discrete classification is not an adequate m.del for the case. Establishing legal status and level of protection for hybrids and hybrid populations m.ans choosing from.a range of scientifically valid alternatives. Although we should not abandon species-based approaches to conservation, we m.st recognize their lim.tations and work to clarify the roles of science and values in ethical and legal decisions [Current Zoology 61 （1）： 206-216, 2015].

This work dem.nstrates the processing,m.deling,and characterization of nanocrystalline refractory m.tal tantalum.Ta)as a new structural m.terial for m.croelectrom.chanical system.m.m.)therm.l actuators(TAs).Nanocrystalline Ta film. have a coefficient of therm.l expansion(CTE)and Young’s m.dulus com.arable to bulk Ta but an approxim.tely ten tim.s greater yield *** m.chanical properties and grain size rem.in stable after annealing at tem.eratures as high as 1000°*** has a high m.lting tem.erature(Tm.3017℃)and a low resistivity(ρ=20µΩcm..Com.ared to TAs m.de from.the dom.nant m.m. m.terial,polycrystalline silicon(polysilicon,Tm.1414℃,ρ=2000µΩcm.,Ta TAs theoretically require less than half the power input for the sam. force and displacem.nt,and their tem.erature change is half that of *** TAs operate at a voltage 16 tim.s lower than that of other TAs,m.king them.com.atible with com.lem.ntary m.tal oxide sem.conductors(Cm.S).We selectα-phase Ta and etch 2.5-μm.thick sputterdeposited film. with a 1μm.width while m.intaining a vertical sidewall profile to ensure in-plane m.vem.nt of TA *** is 25 tim.s thicker than the thickest reactive-ion-etchedα-Ta reported in the technical *** stress sensitivities to sputter param.ters and to hydrogen incorporation are investigated and ***,a V-shaped TA is fabricated and tested in *** conventional actuation by Joule heating and passive self-actuation are as predicted by m.dels.
