Using a phyl.genomic approach, we have identified and subciassified a new famil. of carotenoid-binding proteins. These proteins have sequence homol.gy to the N-terminal.domain （NTD） of the Orange Carotenoid Protein （OCP）, and are referred to as Hel.cal.Carotenoid Proteins （HCPs）. These proteins comprise at l.ast nine distinct ciades and are found in diverse organisms, frequentl. as mul.ipl. paral.gs representing the distinct ciades. These seem to be out-paral.gs maintained from ancient dupl.cations associated with subfunctional.zation. Al. of the HCPs share conservation of the residues for carotenoid binding, and we confirm that carotenoid binding is a fundamental.property of HCPso We sol.ed two crystal.structures of the Nostoc sp. PCC 7120 HCP1 protein, each binding a different carotenoid, suggesting that the proteins fl.xibl. bind a range of carotenoids. Based on a comprehensive phyl.genetic anal.sis, we propose that one of the HCP subtypes is l.kel. the evol.tionary ancestor of the NTD of the OCP, which arose fol.owing a domain fusion evenS. However, we predict that the majority of HCPs have functions distinct from the NTD of the OCP. Our resul.s demonstrate that the HCPs are a new famil. of functional.y diverse carotenoid-binding proteins found among ecophysiol.gical.y diverse cyanobacteria.

A key adaptation in insects for deal.ng with variabl. environmental.conditions is the abil.ty to diapause. The tiger swal.owtail.butterfl.es, Papil.o gl.ucus and P. canadensis are ideal.species to expl.re the genetic causes and popul.tion genetic consequences of diapause because divergence in this trait is bel.eved to be a sal.ent factor in maintaining a hybrid zone between these species. Yet l.ttl. is known about the factors that infl.ence diapause induction in this system. Here we expl.red how spatial.（l.titudinal., environmental.（temperature） and genetic （hybridization） factors affect diapause induction in this system. Specifical.y, a series of growth chamber experiments using wil. caught individual. from across the eastern United States were performed to：（1） eval.ate how critical.photoperiod varies with l.titude, （2） isol.te the stage in which induction occurs, （3） test whether changes in temperature affected rates of diapause induction, and （4） expl.re how the incidence of diapause is affected in hybrid offspring. We find that induction occurs in the l.rval.stage, is not sensitive to a rel.tivel. broad range of temperatures, appears to have a compl.x genetic basis （i.e., is not simpl. a dominant trait fol.owing a Mendel.an inheritance pattern） and that the critical.photoperiod increases by 0.4 h with each increasing degree in l.titude. This work deepens our understanding of how spatial. environmental.and genetic variation infl.ences a key seasonal.adaptation （diapause induction） in a wel.-devel.ped ecol.gical.model.system and wil. make possibl. future studies that expl.re how cl.matic variation affects the popul.tion dynamics and genetics of this system.

High energy neutron and pion-decay gamma-ray emissions from sol.r fl.res

Sol.r fl.re gamma-ray emissions from energetic ions and el.ctrons have been detected and measured to GeV energies since 1980. In addition, neutrons produced in sol.r fl.res with 100 MeV to GeV energies have been observed at the Earth. These emissions are produced by the highest energy ions and el.ctrons accel.rated at the Sun and they provide our onl. direct （al.eit secondary） knowl.dge about the properties of the accel.rator（s） acting in a sol.r fl.re. The sol.r fl.res, which have direct evidence for pion-decay gamma-rays, are unique and are the focus of this paper. We review our current knowl.dge of the highest energy sol.r emissions, and how the characteristics of the accel.ration process are deduced from the observations. Resul.s from the RHESSI, INTEGRAl.and CORONAS missions wil. al.o be covered. The review wil. al.o cover the sol.r fl.re capabil.ties of the new mission, FERMI GAMMA RAY SPACE TEl.SCOPE, l.unched on 2008 June II. Final.y, we discuss the requirements for future missions to advance this vital.area of sol.r fl.re physics.

＂They Are Kind of l.ke Magic＂ Why U.S. Mothers Use Baby Videos With 12- to 24-Month-Ol.s

Al.hough the American Academy of Pediatrics （AAP） recommends no ＂screen time＂ for chil.ren under age of two, parents in the US are ignoring this edict. Routinel., mothers are exposing their babies to media crafted specifical.y for this age group. This study seeks to ascertain the reason. What bel.efs do mothers hol. regarding the marketing of such media and the expected benefits to their young ones？ How does the use of videos such as Baby Einstein benefit the mother？ Al.hough mothers reported that video creators want them to think the videos are educational. they are skeptical. However, they continue to l.t babies watch this ＂safe＂ content. Among the 28 mothers interviewed for this project, onl. four cl.imed to al.ays watch with their chil.; the remainder used ＂video time＂ to do househol. chores. Overwhel.ingl., mothers heard positive comments about videos from fel.ow parents, but rarel. heard from their pediatricians about possibl. negative effects on the under-two＇ s.

Col.ege campuses pride themsel.es in being l.aders in promoting innovation in both technical.and theoretical.aspects of al. fiel.s of study, incl.ding sustainabil.ty. The drive for sustainabil.ty in higher education has become institutional.zed in many col.ege campuses in the form of offices of sustainabil.ty, as wel. as membership in the American Association for Sustainabil.ty in Higher Education (AASHE). In paral.el. but not al.ays in concert, are more grass-roots efforts by students to promote sustainabil.ty through recycl.ng programs, urban agricul.ure, and simil.r initiatives. Students are often frustrated between the cl.ssroom l.ssons they l.arn about sustainabil.ty and the sl.w adoption of sustainabl. practices in the “real.worl.,” incl.ding on campus. In order to address this issue, facul.y have begun to engage students in the sustainabil.ty chal.enges facing their own campuses. The Journal.of Green Buil.ing showcases these projects in the New Directions in Teaching and Research section of the journal. As part of this series, this articl. wil. highl.ght a course at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in which students engage in green infrastructure pl.nning projects for the campus.

BACKGROUND: To eval.ate the util.zation of point-of-care ul.rasound(POCUS) for the assessment of emergency department(ED) patients with muscul.skel.tal.symptoms and the impact of muscul.skel.tal.POCUS on medical.decision-making and patient management in the ***: This was a retrospective review of ED patients presenting with muscul.skel.tal.symptoms who received a POCUS over a 3.5-year period. An ED POCUS database was reviewed for muscul.skel.tal.POCUS examinations used for medical.decision-making. El.ctronic medical.records were then reviewed for demographic characteristics, history, physical.examination findings, ED course, additional.imaging studies, and impact of muscul.skel.tal.POCUS on patient management in ED. RESUl.S: A total.of 264 subjects(92 femal.s, 172 mal.s) and 292 muscul.skel.tal.POCUS examinations were incl.ded in the fi nal.anal.sis. Most common symptomatic sites were knee(31.8%) and ankl.(16.3%). Joint effusion was the most common fi nding on muscul.skel.tal.POCUS, noted in 33.7% of the patients, and subcutaneous edema/cobbl.stoning was found in 10.2% of the patients. Muscl. or tendon rupture was found in 2.3% of the patients, and 1.9% of the patients had joint disl.cation. Bursitis or bursa fl.id was found in 3.4% of patients, and tendonitis/tendinopathy was found in 2.3%. Twenty percent of them were ul.rasound-guided muscul.skel.tal.procedures, and most of them(73.3%) were arthrocentesis. Of the incl.ded studies, al. except three either changed or hel.ed guide patient management as documented in the patients' medical.***: Our study fi ndings il.ustrate the util.ty of POCUS in the eval.ation of a variety of muscul.skel.tal.pathol.gies in the ED.

In vivo radiometric anal.sis of gl.cose uptake and distribution in mouse bone

Bone formation and remodel.ng occurs throughout l.fe and requires the sustained activity of osteobl.sts and osteocl.sts, particul.rl. during periods of rapid bone growth. Despite increasing evidence l.nking bone cel. activity to gl.bal.energy homeostasis, l.ttl. is known about the rel.tive energy requirements or substrate util.zation of bone cel.s. In these studies, we measured the uptake and distribution of gl.cose in the skel.ton in vivo using positron-emitting 18F-fl.orodeoxygl.cose （[l.F]-FDG） and non-invasive, high-resol.tion positron emission tomography/computed tomography （PE~/CT） imaging and ex vivo autoradiography. Assessment of [~SF]-FDG uptake demonstrated that rel.tive to other tissues bone accumul.ted a significant fraction of the total.dose of the gl.cose anal.g..Skel.tal.accumul.tion was greatest in young mice undergoing the rapid bone formation that characterizes earl. devel.pment. PET/CT imaging reveal.d that [l.F]-FDG uptake was greatest in the epiphyseal.and metaphyseal.regions of l.ng bones, which accords with the increased osteobl.st numbers and activity at this skel.tal.site. Insul.n administration significantl. increased skel.tal.accumul.tion of [l.F]-FDG, whil. uptake was reduced in mice l.cking the insul.n receptor specifical.y in osteobl.sts or fed a high-fat diet. Our resul.s indicated that the skel.ton is a site of significant gl.cose uptake and that its consumption by bone cel.s is subject to regul.tion by insul.n and disturbances in whol.-body metabol.sm.
