Cardiac remodeling as a consequence of atrial fibrillation： An anatomical study of perfusion-fixed human heart specimens

Background Atrial fibrillation （AF） causes a continuum of atrial anatomical remodeling. Methods Using a library of perfusion-fixed human hearts, specimens with AF were compared to controls. During this preliminary assessment study, direct measurements were taken of atrial volume, pulmonary vein （PV） circumference, and left atrial （LA） wall thicknesses. Results Hearts with AF typically had larger atrial volumes, as well as a much larger variation in volume compared to controls （range of 59.6-227.1 mL in AF hearts compared to 65.1-115.9 mL in controls）. For all hearts, right PVs were larger than left PVs （mean： 171.4 ± 84.6 mm^2 for right and 1182 ± 50.1 mm^2 for left, P 〈 0.005）. LA wall thicknesses ranged from 0.7 mm to 3.1 mm for both AF and control hearts. Conclusions Hearts with AF had a large range of sizes which is consistent with the progression of atrial remodeling during AF. The large range of thicknesses will influence the amount of energy needed to create transmural lesions during ablation procedures.

Weak Signals and Mind-Sets of Consumers： The Case of Milk

We present results from one of a set of studies run in the early 2000＇s, which looked at weak signals in terms of what consumers wanted. That study, on milk, revealed four distinct mind-sets, groups of respondents who thought alike. These are： S1 Traditional ＋ Health, S2 Traditional ＋ Healthful Ingredients, $3 Traditional ＋ Indulgent, S4 Listens to Authority, respectively. At that time the focus on foods as the source of health and wellness was just beginning. We show how to discover hitherto new, unexpected mind-sets of respondents, using experimental design of messaging, coupled with deconstruction of these messages by regression, and followed by clustering. We suggest that this approach to messaging consumers using experimental design provides a powerful method to uncover emerging mind-sets in the consumer population.

Nutritional fads in the health and fitness world are constantly changing. Each new craze has its believers and critics. For the consumer, “what to believe” becomes a topic filled with uncertainty. This paper presents a systematic approach to understanding what consumers believe about the health messaging of “raw beverages”. The paper presents both substantive results from US consumers, as well as demonstrates a general approach by which researchers can more deeply understand the consumer mind with respect to the specifics of health and wellness issues.

Complex structural variants(CSVs) are genomic alterations that have more than two breakpoints and are considered as the simultaneous occurrence of simple structural ***,detecting the compounded mutational signals of CSVs is challenging through a commonly used model-match *** a result,there has been limited progress for CSV discovery compared with simple structural ***,we systematically analyzed the multi-breakpoint connection feature of CSVs,and proposed Mako,utilizing a bottom-up guided model-free strategy,to detect CSVs from paired-end short-read ***,we implemented a graph-based pattern growth approach,where the graph depicts potential breakpoint connections,and pattern growth enables CSV detection without pre-defined *** evaluations on both simulated and real datasets revealed that Mako outperformed other ***,validation rates of CSVs on real data based on experimental and computational validations as well as manual inspections are around 70%,where the medians of experimental and computational breakpoint shift are 13 bp and 26 bp,***,the Mako CSV subgraph effectively characterized the breakpoint connections of a CSV event and uncovered a total of 15 CSV types,including two novel types of adjacent segment swap and tandem dispersed *** analysis of these CSVs also revealed the impact of sequence homology on the formation of *** is publicly available at https://***/xjtu-omics/Mako.

非洲狮(Pantheraleo)群处于不断的分裂-聚合过程,其亚群大小与原狮群大小以及诸如狮群捕食成功度、协作幼仔保护及狮群领域防卫等社会性因素有关。我们分析了南非一个保护区(Hluhluwe-Umfolozi公园)15年间的狮群大小,其成年雌狮和成年雄狮群的大小在保护区内呈显著性变化。在开放生境中雌狮结大群,而茂密植被生境中则结小群。雄狮群大小与植被类型无关,但在大的雌狮群分布区域发现大雄狮群。令人惊奇的是,作为幼狮成活率指标的幼狮群大小和雌狮平均幼仔数在保护区内没有显著性差异。我们认为,雌狮群大小的不同是对植被结构的适应,即在开放生境中大群有利于协作狩猎、育幼、共同保护幼仔、应对高强度群间领域防卫竞争。相反,茂密植被中,群间竞争很低,高密度植被覆盖有利于狩猎成功及补偿小狮群对幼仔保护的不足。雌狮平均幼仔数在整个保护区内没有变化。
