Computational materials discovery efforts are enabled by large databases of properties derived from high-throughput density functional theory(DFT),which now contain millions of calculations at the generalized gradient approximation(GGA)level of *** is now feasible to carry out high-throughput calculations using more accurate methods,such as meta-GGA DFT;however recomputing an entire database with a higher-fidelity method would not effectively leverage the enormous investment of computational resources embodied in existing(GGA)***,we propose here a general procedure by which higher-fidelity,low-coverage calculations(e.g.,meta-GGA calculations for selected chemical systems)can be combined with lower-fidelity,high-coverage calculations(e.g.,an existing database of GGA calculations)in a robust and scalable *** then use legacy PBE(+U)GGA calculations and new r2SCAN meta-GGA calculations from the materials Project database to demonstrate that our scheme improves solid and aqueous phase stability predictions,and discuss practical considerations for its implementation.

Objective: Studies addressing effective contraceptive use by population density are lacking. We hypothesize that contraception counseling and effective contraception use vary by population density. Study Design: This is a cross-sectional study using the 2006-2010 National Survey of Family Growth data, including female subjects ages 15 to 19. The primary exposure was population density, defined as Principal city of a metropolitan Statistical Area (mSA) or “city”, Other mSA or “non-city urban”, and Not mSA or “rural.” The primary outcome was effective contraception use and the secondary outcome was contraceptive counseling exposure. multivariate analysis using logistic regression was performed to estimate the association between population density and effective contraception use, as well as the likelihood of receiving contraceptive counseling. Results: 2284 subjects were studied. Compared to non-city urban dwellers, city adolescents had similar effective contraception use (aOR: 0.99, [0.79, 1.24]), whereas rural adolescents had significantly higher use (aOR: 1.79, [1.35, 2.36]). Among sexually active respondents who were not using contraception, the rate of contraception counseling in non-city urban adolescents was 66.7%. In comparison, the city dwellers had higher rate of counseling (79.1%, aOR: 1.87;95% CI: [1.09, 3.22]). Similarly, rural adolescents also had higher rate of counseling (81.5%, aOR: 2.37;95% CI: [1.08, 5.19]). Conclusions: Rural residents were more likely to use effective contraception methods than their city and non-city urban counterparts. However, higher rates of contraception counseling among sexually active adolescents not using contraception in city and rural densities could suggest ineffective counseling in these groups.

microvascular free flap surgery has become a successful and reliable method of reconstruction following head and neck cancer resection. The effectiveness of free flap reconstruction has increased with improved surgical technique as well as technological refinement in vessel selection and flap monitoring. Few papers have studied the factors that influence success or failure rates of free flap reconstructions, particularly with an eye towards the technologic advancements that have refined the procedure in the last several decades. Here we present a comprehensive review of perioperative and intraoperative considerations that influence free flap outcomes as well methods of vessel selection and flap monitoring important during microvascular reconstruction of the head and neck.

A pilot study was conducted at Penn State University to determine whether the type of drywall joint compound would influence the shear strength of wood-frame stud walls sheathed with Gypsum Wall Board (GWB or drywall). In this study, five 2438 mm by 2438 mm specimens were tested under in-plane cyclic racking loading following the CUREE loading protocol for light-frame wall systems. Three specimens were finished using non-cement based joint compound while the other two used cement based joint compound. Based on the experimental testing of the specimens, the results show that the use of cement based joint compound on drywall joints produces higher shear capacity for the wall system as compared to similar specimens finished with conventional non-cement based joint compound. The result of the study is particularly important for high seismic regions where interior stud walls in residential construction effectively take part in seismic resistance even though wood shear walls are normally used on exterior walls.

After spinal cord injury,there is an extensive infiltration of immune cells,which exacerbates the injury and leads to further neural ***,a major aim of current research involves targeting the immune response as a treatment for spinal cord *** much research has been performed analyzing the complex inflammatory process following spinal cord injury,there remain major discrepancies within previous literature regarding the timeline of local cytokine *** objectives of this study were to establish an overview of the timeline of cytokine regulation for 2 weeks after spinal cord injury,identify sexual dimorphisms in terms of cytokine levels,and determine local cytokines that significantly change based on the severity of spinal cord *** were inflicted with either a mild contusion,moderate contusion,severe contusion,or complete transection,7 mm of spinal cord centered on the injury was harvested at varying times post-injury,and tissue homogenates were analyzed with a Cytokine/Chemokine 27-Plex *** demonstrated pro-inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factorα,interleukin-1β,and interleukin-6 were all upregulated after spinal cord injury,but returned to uninjured levels within approximately 24 hours post-injury,while chemokines including monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 remained upregulated for days *** contrast,several anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors including interleukin-10 and vascular endothelial growth factor were downregulated by 7 days *** spinal cord injury,tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1,which specifically affects astrocytes involved in glial scar development,increased more than all other cytokines tested,reaching 26.9-fold higher than uninjured *** a mild injury,11 cytokines demonstrated sexual dimorphisms;however,after a severe contusion only leptin levels were different between female and male *** conclusion,pro-inflammatory cytokines in
