Big Metadata,Smart Metadata,and Metadata Capital:Toward Greater Synergy Between Data Science and Metadata

Purpose： The purpose of the paper is to provide a framework for addressing the disconnect between metadata and data science. Data science cannot progress without metadata *** paper takes steps toward advancing the synergy between metadata and data science, and identifies pathways for developing a more cohesive metadata research agenda in data science. Design/methodology/approach： This paper identifies factors that challenge metadata research in the digital ecosystem, defines metadata and data science, and presents the concepts big metadata, smart metadata, and metadata capital as part of a metadata lingua franca connecting to data science. Findings： The ＂utilitarian nature＂ and ＂historical and traditional views＂ of metadata are identified as two intersecting factors that have inhibited metadata research. Big metadata, smart metadata, and metadata capital are presented as part ofa metadata linguafranca to help frame research in the data science research space. Research limitations： There are additional, intersecting factors to consider that likely inhibit metadata research, and other significant metadata concepts to explore. Practical implications： The immediate contribution of this work is that it may elicit response, critique, revision, or, more significantly, motivate research. The work presented can encourage more researchers to consider the significance of metadata as a research worthy topic within data science and the larger digital ecosystem. Originality/value： Although metadata research has not kept pace with other data science topics, there is little attention directed to this problem. This is surprising, given that metadata is essential for data science endeavors. This examination synthesizes original and prior scholarship to provide new grounding for metadata research in data science.

Driver state sensing technologies, such as vehicular systems, start to be widely considered by automotive manufacturers. To reduce the cost and minimize the intrusiveness towards driving, the majority of these systems rely on the in-cabin camera(s) and other optical sensors. With their great capabilities in detecting and intervening of driver distraction and inattention,these technologies may become key components in future vehicle safety and control systems. However, to the best of our knowledge,currently, there is no common standard available to objectively compare the performance of these technologies. Thus, it is imperative to develop one standardized process for evaluation *** this paper, we propose one systematic and standardized evaluation process after successfully addressing three difficulties:1) defining and selecting the important influential individual and environmental factors, 2) countering the effects of individual differences and randomness in driver behaviors, and 3) building a reliable in-vehicle driver head motion tracking tool to collect ground-truth motion data. We have collected data on a large scale on a commercial driver state-sensing platform. For each subject, 30 to 40 minutes of head motion data was collected and included variables, such as lighting conditions, head/face features,and camera locations. The collected data was analyzed based on a proposed performance measure. The results show that the developed process can efficiently evaluate an individual camerabased driver state sensing product, which builds a common base for comparing the performance of different systems.

Effects of neem-based insecticides on beet armyworm （Lepidoptera： Noctuidae）

Three commercial neem [Azadirachta indica A. Juss (Meliaceae)]-basedinsecticides, Agroneem, Ecozin, and Neemix, and a non-commercial neem leaf powder, were evaluatedfor oviposition deterrence, antifeedant effect on larvae, and toxicity to eggs and larvae of thebeet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Huebner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), on cotton leaves in thelaboratory. Oviposition deterrence in no-choice, and two- and five-choice assays, was observed forthe neem-based insecticide treatments when compared with a non-treated control. Neem-basedinsecticides also deterred feeding by beet armyworm larvae. Direct contact with neem-basedinsecticides decreased the survival of beet army-worm eggs. Survival of beet armyworm larvae fed for7 days on leaves treated with neem-based insecticides was reduced to 27, 33, 60, and 61% for neemleaf powder, Ecozin, Agroneem, and Neemix, respectively. Possibilities for adoption of neem-basedinsecticides in commercial cotton for beet armyworm control are discussed.

This article illustrates quality improvement(QI)methodology using an example intended to improve chlamydia screening in *** projects in healthcare provide great opportunities to improve patient quality and safety in a real-world healthcare setting,yet many academic centres lack training programmes on how to conduct QI *** choice of chlamydia screening was based on the significant health burden chlamydia poses despite simple ways to screen and *** the University of Michigan,we implemented a multidepartment process to improve the chlamydia screening rates using the plan-do-check-act *** to guide QI projects include the following:(1)assemble a motivated team of stakeholders and leaders;(2)identify the problem that is considered a high priority;(3)prepare for the project including support and resources;(4)set a goal and ways to evaluate outcomes;(5)identify the root cause(s)of the problem and prioritise based on impact and effort to address;(6)develop a countermeasure that addresses the selected root cause effectively;(7)pilot a small-scale project to assess for possible modifications;(8)large-scale roll-out including education on how to implement the project;and(9)assess and modify the process with a feedback *** this nine-step process,chlamydia screening rates increased from 29%to 60%.QI projects differ from most clinical research projects by allowing clinicians to directly improve patients’health while contributing to the medical science *** may interest clinicians wishing to conduct relevant research that can be disseminated through academic channels.

Kaposi sarcoma(KS) is an aggressive cancer caused by human herpesvirus-8, primarily seen in immunocompromised patients. As opposed to the well-described cutaneous manifestations and pulmonary complications of KS, hepatic KS is rarely reported before death as most patients with hepatic KS do not manifest symptoms or evidence of liver injury. In patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome, hepatic involvement of KS is present in 12%-24% of the population on incidental imaging and in approximately 35% of patients with cutaneous KS if an autopsy was completed after their death. Patients with clinically significant hepatic injury due to hepatic KS usually have an aggressive course of disease with hepatic failure often progressing to multi-organ failure and death. Here we report an unusual presentation of acute liver injury due to hepatic KS and briefly review the published literature on hepatic KS.

Sublethal effects of malathion on boll weevil （Coleoptera： Curculionidae） fecundity when maintained on cotton squares or artificial diet

Mated 3-day-old female boll weevils, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman, reared from field-infested cotton （Gossypium hirsutum L.） squares were topically treated with an estimated LD50 of malathion （2μg） to assess its effects on fecundity, oviposition, and body fat condition. Two different food sources, cotton squares and artificial diet, were assessed in malathion-treated and nontreated （control） weevils. The LD50 caused ≈ 50% mortality in the square-fed malathion treatment, but the artificial diet-fed malathion-treated weevils were less susceptible. LD50 survivors fed on the squares produced ≥ 9 times more chorionated eggs in the ovaries and oviposited ≥ 19-fold more than survivors fed artificial diet, regardless of the malathion treatment. Boll weevils that survived a 2μg LD50 malathion and also fed squares were ≈4.5-fold leaner than diet-fed weevils. Our findings demonstrate that non-resistant boll weevils surviving a sublethal dose of malathion will reproduce without any delay or significant loss in fecundity, and the food source for which boll weevils are maintained when conducting these assays will directly affect the results. The significance of these findings and how they are related to the final stages of eradicating the boll weevil from the US are discussed.
